You can use OpenAI Codex on Windows either through its desktop app or from a terminal with the CLI. Choose native Windows execution for a PowerShell workflow, or use a Linux environment through WSL; WSL is optional. The installation steps differ by client, and the CLI’s documented Windows instructions are version-sensitive, so check OpenAI’s current guide before installing.
Choose the Windows Codex experience that fits your workflow
Codex has desktop and command-line entry points, but installing one does not automatically install the other. OpenAI’s onboarding for Codex Security likewise treats the desktop app and CLI as separate routes after Codex is installed: Codex Security setup.

OpenAI describes both Windows-native sandboxing and Linux sandboxing through WSL in its Deployment Safety Hub. Pick the route that matches where your projects and tools live; WSL is not a prerequisite for Codex on Windows.
Install Codex using the route you chose
Desktop app
Use OpenAI’s current Codex desktop installation flow for the app. The Codex Security page introduces desktop and CLI onboarding, but it is not a complete Windows installation guide. Do not treat installing the desktop app as installing the terminal CLI.

CLI
An older OpenAI Help Center article documents this global npm installation command:
npm install -g @openai/codex
That article labels Windows support experimental, so consider the command historical guidance rather than a guarantee of the current Windows installation path. Before running it, consult OpenAI’s current Codex CLI guide for supported installation instructions and requirements. The older article is available at OpenAI Codex CLI: Getting started.

If you intend to run Codex in WSL, follow the current CLI guidance for that Linux environment and make sure you launch Codex from the WSL distribution you plan to use. That is a different execution route from running the CLI in PowerShell.
What the native Windows sandbox does—and why setup can ask for elevation
In OpenAI’s engineering account dated 2026-05-13, Member of Technical Staff David Wiesen describes the current native Windows sandbox as using restricted tokens and dedicated local sandbox users. The design includes an offline identity, CodexSandboxOffline, and an online identity, CodexSandboxOnline. Firewall rules block outbound traffic for the offline user; the article does not say that every Codex command in every mode has its network access disabled. Initial native sandbox setup may request administrator elevation because it performs system-level work, including creating or validating sandbox users and synthetic security identifiers, storing credentials encrypted with Windows DPAPI, applying firewall rules, and adding read-access permissions where the separate sandbox identity otherwise could not read files available to the normal user. OpenAI says setup runs through a dedicated setup binary, while command execution uses a separate runner and restricted token.
Elevation during setup is not the same as granting Codex unrestricted access for every command. The sandbox boundary and the approval policy are separate controls: the sandbox constrains what a process can do, while approval settings govern when Codex asks before proceeding. Review the requested elevation and use OpenAI’s current Windows setup flow rather than bypassing required setup steps.

Why older Windows walkthroughs may differ
Wiesen’s 2026-05-13 article describes an earlier prototype that avoided elevation and relied on environment, proxy, and executable-path measures to block common network routes. The same article identifies the elevated sandbox as the current implementation at publication. A walkthrough based on that prototype may therefore describe a different setup than current native Windows Codex.

Use a narrowly scoped project directory and review access or approval requests rather than assuming that the sandbox replaces judgment about what you authorize. For CLI configuration, OpenAI’s Help Center recommends sandbox_mode = "read-only" together with approval_policy = "on-request" as a restrictive alternative in the policy context where approval_policy = "untrusted" is no longer supported. That recommendation and its applicability depend on the client and version; check the current OpenAI Help Center guidance before changing settings. It is not a requirement for every Windows user.

Do not equate read-only mode with a complete network ban. Similarly, the native sandbox’s offline identity has outbound-blocking firewall rules, but the online identity is not covered by those rules. Use the mode and approvals appropriate to the task, and treat access prompts as decisions to review, not as routine clicks.

Consider where your repository, dependencies, and command-line tools are located before choosing. The two routes have different sandbox implementations and should not be treated as interchangeable merely because both start on a Windows PC.
Troubleshoot startup or connectivity problems
For Windows CLI issues, OpenAI’s Help Center points to Codex Doctor, which diagnoses startup, connectivity, and performance problems. In the terminal where you use Codex, run:
codex doctor
This command is Help Center guidance and may be client- or version-sensitive; if it is unavailable in your installation, check the current CLI guide. If you use multiple WSL distributions, verify that Codex is using the intended distribution before investigating Linux-side startup or network behavior.
