To run the historical Kdenlive 20.04 release on Ubuntu 20.04, download its Linux AppImage from Kdenlive’s official older-version archive, make the file executable, and launch it. Prefer version 20.04.1 if it is still listed: it was the first maintenance release for the 20.04 series. The archive’s current contents and exact filename have not been confirmed here, so check the filename shown on the download page before using the example command below.
Choose the right Kdenlive version
Kdenlive 20.04 was released on 24 April 2020. Its first maintenance update, 20.04.1, followed on 16 May 2020. If both releases appear in the official archive, choose 20.04.1: its release notes describe fixes for problems in 20.04.0, including crashes involving playlists, subclip thumbnails, timeline clips, DVD chapters, and project-profile detection. The notes also mention an AppImage change removing an OpenCV SSE4 dependency for older systems; that is not a guarantee that every compatibility issue will be resolved.
The 20.04 release introduced features including preview scaling, project-bin rating and filtering, multicam improvements, pitch compensation when changing clip speed, and OpenTimelineIO import and export. These identify the release, but are not prerequisites for installation. See the Kdenlive 20.04 announcement and 20.04.1 release notes.
Download the archived AppImage
- Open Kdenlive’s official download page.
- Follow its link to older versions and look for the Linux AppImage for Kdenlive 20.04.1. If it is unavailable, check whether the archive offers 20.04.0; do not assume that a similarly named file from another site is an official build.
- Download the file and note its exact name. The archive’s present listing and filename are not confirmed here, so do not assume the illustrative filename in the next section matches your download.
Kdenlive’s download page directs users who need older releases to its archive. If you instead want a currently supported editor, use the current version offered on that page; it will not be Kdenlive 20.04.

Make the AppImage executable and run it
An AppImage is launched as a downloaded file rather than installed through the usual Ubuntu package-manager process. In the file manager, right-click the downloaded file, open Properties, find the permissions setting, enable execution as a program, and then double-click the file. Labels can vary by Ubuntu desktop environment.
Alternatively, open a terminal and substitute the exact filename you downloaded:

If the terminal reports that the file cannot be found, check that you are in the directory containing the download and that the filename matches exactly.

Why not use APT or a PPA for this version?
Ubuntu packages are organized by release series; Canonical’s archive documentation identifies focal as the series name for Ubuntu 20.04. The package version available to you depends on the configured series and repositories. The current package search results do not establish what version Kdenlive’s official Ubuntu 20.04 archive provides, so do not assume that sudo apt install kdenlive installs 20.04. Check Ubuntu’s package information for your configured repositories if you want to use APT, and verify the version before installing.
Kdenlive’s current manual says official PPA support ended beginning with version 24.02. That is current project policy, not evidence of what PPA support or availability was in 2020. Avoid relying on an old third-party PPA unless its Ubuntu series, package source, and maintenance status are verified. For background, see Canonical’s package archive documentation.
