On a 64-bit Ubuntu 16.04 desktop, install Google Earth Pro using Google’s Debian/Ubuntu .deb package. Open the downloaded file in Ubuntu’s package installer; if dependency handling fails, install the local package with apt. Ubuntu 16.04 meets Google’s published minimum Linux version, but Google does not specifically guarantee compatibility with Xenial.
Which Google Earth package should you use?
Google’s standard desktop download page offers the version 7.3 Debian/Ubuntu package for 64-bit Linux and says it automatically installs recommended updates. Download it from Google Earth’s official desktop download page. The current standard page does not offer a 32-bit Linux package.
Google’s installer listing separately identifies Google Earth Pro 7.3.7 for Linux Debian/Ubuntu 64-bit and 7.3.0.3832 for Linux 32-bit; those versions were listed on September 30, 2026. Google says versions 7.1.7 and earlier are no longer supported. For a 64-bit Xenial computer, use the standard desktop download rather than seeking an older installer.
Check your system before installing
Google’s published Linux minimums are Ubuntu 14, Fedora 23, or equivalent or newer; an amd64-compatible 1 GHz processor; 2 GB of system memory; 2 GB of available disk space; an internet connection; and OpenGL 1.4-compatible 3D graphics. These are minimum requirements, not a guarantee that every Xenial graphics driver or configuration will work. See Google’s Google Earth Pro installation and system requirements.
#1 Best Overall
Ubuntu 16.04 is above Google’s stated minimum OS version, but the same help page does not name Xenial as a specifically supported release. Google says Earth Pro functions with most recent versions of Ubuntu and Fedora; that general statement should not be read as a promise for every installation of this older Ubuntu release.
Install Google Earth Pro from the downloaded .deb
-
Open Google’s Google Earth desktop download page and download the 64-bit Debian/Ubuntu
.deb. Confirm that the download is from Google’searth.google.comsite. -
Open your Downloads folder and double-click the downloaded
.deb. In Ubuntu’s package installer, select Install and authenticate if prompted. Ubuntu’s Community Help Wiki also documents installing a downloaded.debby double-clicking it: GoogleEarth installation notes.Recommended Free Tools
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
When installation finishes, launch Google Earth Pro from the applications menu.
Use apt if the graphical installer cannot resolve dependencies
If the package installer reports unresolved dependencies or cannot complete installation, use apt to install the downloaded local package. In a terminal, change to the directory containing the file—usually Downloads—and run:
sudo apt install ./google-earth-pro-stable_current_amd64.deb
Rank #4
If Google’s downloaded filename differs, replace google-earth-pro-stable_current_amd64.deb with the exact filename shown in that directory. Review apt’s proposed package changes and proceed only if they are acceptable. This is the local-package form of the apt command; results can depend on the system’s package sources and configuration.
Troubleshoot installation or launch problems
- Architecture mismatch: The current standard Google download is for 64-bit Linux. Confirm that Ubuntu is a 64-bit amd64 installation before trying to install it.
- Dependency errors: Try the apt local-package command above, which can resolve dependencies using configured package sources. Read the proposed changes before confirming.
- Installation succeeds but Earth Pro will not launch: Check the exact error, available disk space, and whether the graphics hardware and driver provide OpenGL 1.4-compatible support.
- Older instructions mention 32-bit libraries or lsb-core: The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki includes historical instructions and older installer details. Treat those as legacy notes, not as current Google requirements; Google’s regular download page now presents a 64-bit Debian/Ubuntu package.
Plan for Ubuntu 16.04’s end of standard maintenance
Canonical reported that Ubuntu 16.04’s standard five-year maintenance ended in April 2021. Canonical’s 2021 article said Extended Security Maintenance would continue until April 2026 for eligible enrolled systems; that stated endpoint has passed. Do not assume Xenial still receives ESM based on that article. For an internet-connected computer, plan to move to an Ubuntu release that currently receives security support. See Canonical’s Ubuntu 16.04 lifecycle notice.
