Gmail on Windows 11 is accessed in a browser; Google does not provide a separate native Gmail desktop mail client. The simplest way to make Gmail easy to open is to create a Windows desktop shortcut to https://mail.google.com. If Chrome offers the option, you can also install Gmail as an app-like web app.

Create a Gmail desktop shortcut

This Windows shortcut opens Gmail in your default browser. You do not need Chrome specifically.

  1. Right-click an empty area of the Windows desktop.
  2. Choose New > Shortcut.
  3. Enter https://mail.google.com as the location, then select Next.
  4. Name the shortcut Gmail, then finish creating it.
  5. Open the shortcut and sign in to your Google account if prompted.

The exact wording in Windows may vary slightly by version.

Install Gmail as a Chrome web app

Chrome can present supported websites in an app-like window and manage them as web apps. The install option may not appear in every configuration; if you do not see it, use the desktop shortcut above.

  1. Open Gmail in Chrome at https://mail.google.com.
  2. Open Chrome’s More menu and look under Cast, save, and share for Install page as app. If Chrome shows an Install control beside the address bar, you can select that instead.
  3. Follow Chrome’s on-screen instructions.

A Chrome web app uses Chrome’s web-app presentation; it is not an independently installed native Windows Gmail program. To manage Chrome web apps, enter chrome://apps in Chrome’s address bar. Google’s Chrome guidance also describes creating shortcuts to the desktop or menus from web-app management.

Desktop shortcut and Chrome web app compared

Option What it does Best for
Windows desktop shortcut Opens Gmail’s website in your default browser. A simple, broadly dependable way to launch Gmail.
Chrome web app Opens Gmail in Chrome’s web-app presentation and can be managed with Chrome’s app tools. A more app-like window, if Chrome provides the install option.

Optional: use Gmail Offline

Gmail Offline is a separate Gmail setting, not a requirement for creating a shortcut or web app. Google says it lets you read, search, and reply to messages without an internet connection after you enable it and allow mail to sync. In Gmail’s offline settings, turn on offline mail, choose how many days of messages to sync, and save your changes.

Google’s guidance notes that Gmail Offline works in a regular Chrome window, not Incognito. Messages sent while offline remain in the Outbox and are sent when the connection returns. Offline use is subject to browser storage and sync limits: syncing can be affected by insufficient disk space, Guest mode, clearing site data on exit, or closing Chrome.

Make Chrome your default browser (optional)

You do not need to make Chrome your default browser to use Gmail. If you want desktop shortcuts to open in Chrome, Windows 11 provides the default-app setting:

FAQ

Is there a native Gmail app for Windows 11?

Google’s guidance provides browser access and shortcuts, not a separate native Gmail desktop mail client. You can open Gmail in a browser, create a Windows desktop shortcut, or use Chrome’s web-app option when available.

What is the easiest way to put Gmail on my desktop?

Create a Windows shortcut pointing to https://mail.google.com. It opens Gmail in your default browser.

Why can’t I find the Chrome install option?

Chrome’s web-app install control is not shown in every configuration. Use the Windows desktop shortcut if the option is absent, and follow the on-screen prompts if Chrome’s menu labels differ.

Does installing a shortcut or web app enable offline Gmail?

No. Gmail Offline is a separate setting that you must enable in Gmail. Google’s guidance describes using it in a regular Chrome window, with storage and sync limitations.

Will a Gmail shortcut or Chrome web app delete my account?

No. These options provide a way to open Gmail; they do not delete your Google account or messages.
