Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To build Fluent Bit from source, first choose your operating system and architecture, a specific release tag, and the input, filter, and output plugins your pipeline needs. Then install that platform’s compiler and development dependencies, configure the source tree with CMake, compile it, and install or package the result. The commands below follow the official build guides reviewed on October 4, 2026; verify the live instructions for your chosen release because dependencies and platform support can change.
What to decide before you build
Write down these details before installing dependencies. They determine whether the build is reproducible and whether it can run the pipeline you intend to use.
- Operating system and architecture: identify the exact Linux distribution or macOS/Windows version, plus the target architecture.
- Fluent Bit release: choose a stable source tag for production-oriented work and record it. The official downloads guide distinguishes stable releases from development source; the latter is intended for contributors and may have compile-time or runtime issues.
- Toolchain: record the compiler and CMake versions you will use.
- Plugins and features: list required inputs, filters, and outputs, including any non-default components. Plugin-specific libraries can introduce additional prerequisites, and Windows does not support every plugin.
Use the chosen tag throughout the build rather than following a moving development branch. Check that tag’s platform and plugin support before committing to a platform.
Build Fluent Bit with CMake on Linux
Install prerequisites
Fluent Bit uses CMake as its build system. The official build and install guide lists bison, build essentials, CMake, flex, OpenSSL and YAML development packages, and pkg-config among the prerequisites. At the time that page was reviewed, it specified CMake 3.31.6 or later. Package names and available versions vary by distribution, and the requirement can change, so follow the current instructions for the release you selected. Plugins can require further libraries; Kafka is one example noted in the guide.

Configure, compile, and install
From the source checkout, the documented build outline is:
cd build/
cmake ../
make
make install
CMake configures the build tree, make compiles it, and make install installs the resulting program. These commands assume you have entered the source tree’s build directory and prepared the prerequisites. The install prefix, CMake generator, parallel build settings, and features can be configured with CMake options; consult the build guide for the options supported by your selected release rather than assuming defaults fit your deployment.

Build on macOS
The official macOS guide describes source compilation on current macOS for x86_64 and Apple Silicon. Its route uses Homebrew for dependencies, then checks out a selected source tag, configures environment paths for OpenSSL and Bison, builds with CMake, and installs. Verify the guide against the exact macOS and Fluent Bit versions you are using.
Install dependencies and build
The guide’s Homebrew dependency command is:
brew install git cmake openssl bison libyaml
After checking out the release tag you chose, follow the guide’s OpenSSL and Bison environment-path setup for your Homebrew installation, then configure and compile with CMake. Its example installs under /opt/fluent-bit; treat that as an example destination, not a universal requirement. The guide also describes CPack as an option for creating a package.

The Homebrew Fluent Bit package mentioned on the macOS page is explicitly not officially supported, although it may work for basic use and testing. Installing that package is different from compiling Fluent Bit from source.
Build on Windows
Before selecting Windows, confirm that the release supports every input, filter, and output your pipeline requires. The official Windows guide states that not all plugins are supported on Windows; check the selected release’s current build configuration and plugin documentation for the specific set.

Prepare the Windows toolchain
The documented custom-build prerequisites include Microsoft C++ Build Tools with CMake tools for Windows, flex and bison (the guide documents a route using winflexbison), OpenSSL libraries and headers, and Git. Use the versions and setup described in the Windows guide for your release.
Configure and compile in a developer prompt
The guide’s example runs from a Visual Studio developer command prompt, clones the repository, configures with the NMake Makefiles generator, and builds. The core CMake pattern is:

Run it from the build directory after opening the developer prompt and preparing the dependencies. The exact repository checkout, paths, and configuration options must match the selected release and your installed OpenSSL, flex, and bison components. The guide also demonstrates a dummy-to-stdout smoke command and describes CPack for optional packaging; use its current command examples to validate and package your build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose normal or static configuration
In normal operation, Fluent Bit can receive configuration from files or command-line arguments. Static-configuration mode instead embeds configuration in the executable and disables external configuration files and runtime flags. It can fit a deployment that needs a fixed pipeline, but it removes the usual ability to change configuration at runtime.
To use this mode, prepare a build input directory containing a configuration with service, input, and output sections, then follow the release-specific steps in the official static configuration build guide. Choose it only when the configuration constraints are acceptable for the way the binary will be operated.
Quick Recap
Verify the build path before relying on it
- Confirm the release tag, OS, and architecture match the intended deployment.
- Check that all required plugins are supported on that platform and that their extra libraries are installed.
- Use the selected release’s current CMake options and platform instructions; dependency versions and package names are not timeless.
- On Windows, run the documented smoke command after compiling; on other platforms, use the validation appropriate to your pipeline and deployment.
- For production, preserve the tag, toolchain versions, dependency list, CMake options, and install or package destination alongside the build procedure.
