Windows usually installs a compatible device driver through Windows Update, but it may miss a newly released driver, an optional driver, or hardware that is not working correctly. Manual installation is useful when you have downloaded a driver from a PC or component manufacturer, need to reinstall a damaged driver, or want to install a specific version.
The safest sources are the official support page for your laptop, desktop, motherboard, printer, graphics card, or other device. Avoid third-party driver-download sites. Before installing anything, confirm the driver supports your exact hardware, Windows version, and system architecture.
Before installing a driver manually
Identify the hardware first. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
A device with a yellow warning icon may be missing a driver or may have a driver problem. If you are unsure which entry represents the hardware, right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the General and Details tabs. The hardware manufacturer’s support page may also list the correct driver by model number.

Download the package from the manufacturer’s official website. Check these details before running it:
- Exact computer or device model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility
- 64-bit or 32-bit architecture, where offered
- Correct component type, such as Wi-Fi, chipset, audio, storage, graphics, or printer
- Release notes and any installation instructions
Save the download somewhere easy to find, such as C:Drivers. Create a restore point or make sure you have a current backup before replacing a driver that is working. A bad driver can make a device stop working, and graphics, storage, and network drivers can affect how you use the computer.
Method 1: Install optional drivers through Windows Update
Windows Update automatically installs recommended, compatible, certified drivers when one is available. Optional driver updates are different: Windows does not install them automatically, so you must select them yourself.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Additional options, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products if it is off.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand the available driver updates and select the ones you want.
- Select Download and install.
- Restart the computer when the installation finishes. Microsoft recommends restarting even if Windows does not explicitly request it.
For ordinary updates, use Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for Windows updates, then choose Download & install when updates are offered.

Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If the option appears, select View optional updates > Driver updates.
- Select the desired driver updates and choose Download and install.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to run, but normal free Microsoft update support, security fixes, and technical assistance have ended. Manufacturer driver pages may still provide packages for particular hardware, but check the manufacturer’s stated support period.
Method 2: Install a downloaded driver with Device Manager
Use this method when you have an extracted driver folder containing an .inf file. Device Manager’s browse procedure is not intended for selecting a downloaded .exe installer. If the manufacturer’s download is an executable installer, run that installer according to the manufacturer’s instructions instead. If it is a ZIP file, extract it first.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Under Browse for drivers on your computer, select Browse….
- In Browse For Folder, select the extracted folder containing the driver files, then select OK.
- Confirm the folder path and select Next.
- When installation completes, select Close.
- Restart the computer if Windows or the manufacturer’s instructions request it.
If the folder contains several subfolders, select the folder supplied by the manufacturer as the driver root. Windows searches for the appropriate .inf file in the selected location. Do not point Device Manager at the original ZIP file or at an .exe file when using this particular workflow.

What if Device Manager says the best driver is already installed?
That message does not necessarily mean your downloaded package is unusable. It means Windows did not consider the selected driver a better match for that device. Device Manager does not always install the package with the newest-looking date, and it will not simply replace the current driver because you selected a different folder.

A driver with an older displayed date can still be the intended package because Windows uses targeting and matching information inside the driver package, not just the date shown in its details.
You can also try Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software. If Windows does not find one, select Search for updated drivers on Windows Update when that option appears.
Method 3: Run the manufacturer’s installer
Many manufacturers distribute drivers as an executable installer rather than as a folder for Device Manager. This is common for graphics, audio, chipset, printer, and laptop-specific packages.
- Download the installer from the official manufacturer’s support page.
- Close applications that use the device, if the manufacturer’s instructions recommend doing so.
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator if required.
- Follow the installer screens, paying attention to the selected components and any clean-install option.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
Do not assume that every executable with “driver” in its name is safe or appropriate. Verify the publisher, the device model, and the source page before opening it. For a laptop, the laptop manufacturer may customize a driver even when the underlying component came from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Realtek, or another supplier.

PnPUtil.exe is included with Windows and is located in %windir%System32. It provides a practical command-line method for adding an extracted driver package to the Windows driver store and installing it on matching hardware.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

pnputil /add-driver "C:PathDriverdriver.inf" /installReplace the path with the actual location of the extracted .inf file. To process every INF file in a folder and its subfolders, run:
pnputil /add-driver "C:PathDriver*.inf" /subdirs /installThe switches mean:

/install does not force a lower-ranked driver onto a device. Windows still uses driver matching and ranking. If the package is added successfully but the device does not change, inspect the available matches and their ranking:
pnputil /enum-devices /instanceid "DEVICE_INSTANCE_ID" /driversReplace DEVICE_INSTANCE_ID with the device’s actual instance ID. You can inspect third-party packages already in the driver store with:
pnputil /enum-driversOn Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, you can include the files in each package:
pnputil /enum-drivers /filesAfter connecting or removing hardware, scan for changes with:
pnputil /scan-devicesThese commands use the current slash-based syntax. Older forms such as -a [-i] and -d [-f] remain supported as legacy syntax, but Microsoft recommends the newer commands.

Remove or replace a driver package
Do not remove a driver merely because its date looks old. First identify the package and confirm that you have a replacement or a recovery plan. To remove a package from the driver store and uninstall it from devices using it, run an elevated Command Prompt command such as:

pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstallUse the actual published name, such as oem42.inf, shown by pnputil /enum-drivers. Force removal is available but should be used cautiously:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall /forceThe /force option permits deletion even when devices are using the package. A restart may be required, so save your work first.
Reinstall through Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm by selecting Uninstall.
- Restart through right-click Start > Shut down or sign out > Restart.
After the restart, Windows attempts to reinstall the driver. Some devices, including some printers, may require you to install the driver manually afterward.

Roll back a driver that caused a problem
If the hardware stopped working immediately after a driver change, try the previous driver:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason, select Yes, and restart if prompted.
Administrator permissions are required. The rollback option may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver retained.
Why a manual driver installation fails

| Windows reports a signature problem | Use a properly signed package from the official manufacturer. Windows uses signatures to verify the package’s integrity and publisher identity. |
On 64-bit Windows, kernel-mode drivers must be signed to load. An unsigned or improperly signed driver may copy into the driver store but still fail when Windows tries to load it. Do not bypass Windows security checks just to install an unknown driver; obtain a correctly signed, compatible release instead.

Final checks after installation
- Restart Windows if the installer did not already do so.
- Open Device Manager and confirm that the device no longer shows a warning icon.
- Open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and check the provider and version.
- Test the hardware: connect to Wi-Fi, play audio, print a test page, check display output, or use the relevant peripheral.
- If the problem began after the change, use Roll Back Driver or reinstall the previous known-good package.
FAQ
Can I install a driver without Device Manager?
Yes. If the manufacturer provides an EXE installer, run it from the official support page and follow its instructions. For an extracted INF package, use Device Manager or an elevated PnPUtil command such as pnputil /add-driver "C:Driversdevice.inf" /install.

Should I choose the driver with the newest date?
Not automatically. The displayed date is not the sole measure of suitability. Windows uses matching and targeting information in the package, so an older-looking driver can still be the correct one for a device.
Why does Windows Update not show my driver?
Windows Update only offers compatible packages selected for your hardware and Windows installation. Check Optional updates, then use the device manufacturer’s official support page if the package is not offered.
Can I select an EXE file in Device Manager’s Browse my computer option?
No, not for the manual browse procedure. Extract the package and select the folder containing its INF driver files. If the manufacturer supplied an EXE setup program, run that program instead.
Does PnPUtil force-install a driver?
No. /install installs or updates matching devices only when Windows considers the package an appropriate, sufficiently ranked match. It does not force a lower-ranked driver over the current one.

Restart if possible, open Device Manager > device Properties > Driver, and select Roll Back Driver. If rollback is unavailable, uninstall the device and restart, or reinstall the previous package from the manufacturer.
The Bottom Line
For most systems, start with Windows Update and its Optional updates section. When you need a particular manufacturer package, use its official installer or extract the package and browse to the INF folder in Device Manager. PnPUtil is the most direct command-line option, but it still respects Windows driver ranking and will not force an unsuitable package onto hardware. Confirm compatibility and signing before installation, then restart and test the device.
