“CMS” and “ITSM” do not identify one standard pair of Ubuntu applications. The CMS project documented here is a programming-contest management system; the ITSM guide is for Pandora ITSM, a separate service-management product. Confirm those are the products you mean before following either installation path. Their official guides target different Ubuntu releases: CMS documents Ubuntu 24.04, while Pandora’s detailed procedure targets Ubuntu Server 22.04.

How to install CMS on Ubuntu Linux

The CMS project runs on Linux and documents an Ubuntu 24.04 installation. It is contest infrastructure, not a general-purpose website content management system. Its requirements include PostgreSQL 9.4 or later, GCC, Python 3.11 or later, Isolate 2.0 or later, and a Linux kernel with cgroupv2 support. The official guide’s Ubuntu 24.04 dependency command installs build tools, OpenJDK 11 headless, Free Pascal, PostgreSQL, Python 3.12 and development tools, PostgreSQL and YAML libraries, shared MIME data, reference documentation, zip, and curl. Install compiler runtimes for the contest languages you intend to accept. See the CMS installation guide for the current commands and package details.

Install as a dedicated account

  1. Install the system dependencies listed in the CMS guide and install Isolate 2.0 or later from its upstream repository. If you use packaged Isolate, add the CMS account to the isolate group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Create a dedicated account, commonly cmsuser, and obtain a CMS release archive or repository source. Keep the source directory separate from the installation directory.

  3. Run the installer as that account, substituting the directory you chose: ./install.py --dir=<install_dir> cms. The installer creates a Python virtual environment and data, log, and cache directories; installs CMS and its Python dependencies; checks Isolate; and copies sample configuration files.

Configure the database and protect the contest

Create a PostgreSQL user and a database owned by that user. Grant the schema and large-object privileges CMS requires, set the connection credentials in cms.toml, and initialize the schema with cmsInitDB. If PostgreSQL is on another machine, configure its listening addresses and host-based access controls deliberately. The runtime guide describes shared service and database settings in cms.toml; ranking-server-specific settings may belong in cms_ranking.toml. Consult the CMS runtime guide.

  • Set non-trivial ranking credentials and decide which services run on which machines. For fairness, the guide recommends dedicated worker machines; run isolate-check-environment on each worker host.

  • Account for host configuration: CPU power management and active swap can affect evaluation consistency or resource limits.

  • The guide describes starting logging and resource services and optional user-level systemd services. It recommends nginx in front of contestant web services for HTTPS; multiple contest web-server instances require a load balancer.

How to install ITSM on Ubuntu Linux

The product-specific ITSM procedure covered here is Pandora ITSM. Its detailed Ubuntu installation guide targets Ubuntu Server 22.04 and uses Apache, PHP-FPM, and Percona Server. Pandora’s general requirements call for MySQL 8 or later and PHP 8 or later; the detailed procedure specifies PHP 8.1. Check the Pandora ITSM installation manual for the current supported combinations and procedure before installing.

Check the requirements before choosing a procedure

Pandora’s general requirements list a minimum 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, and 10 GB disk, with 4 GB RAM and 20 GB disk recommended. Separately, the detailed Ubuntu 22.04 procedure asks for root rights, internet access, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB free disk. These are two different sets of guidance: meet the detailed procedure’s prerequisites as well as checking the product’s general requirements. Pandora requires MySQL or Percona and is accessed with a modern HTML5 browser.

Follow the Ubuntu 22.04 procedure carefully

The manual’s detailed path installs Apache and PHP-FPM, PHP extensions and web-console dependencies, and Percona Server. It then creates a database and application user and configures the web console and supporting services. The manual also lists an automated Ubuntu deployment script to run as root. Before using either approach, review the current vendor instructions and set unique database credentials rather than relying on script defaults.

The manual includes a section titled “Disable AppArmor and UFW.” Disabling host protections weakens security and should not be treated as a routine installation step. Do not turn them off without a current, product-specific vendor justification and an understood alternative that preserves appropriate host protection; the available installation guidance does not establish such an alternative.

Which installation guide applies?

These are two independent deployments, not components of one stack. CMS manages programming contests and uses PostgreSQL, Python, and sandboxed evaluation workers. Pandora ITSM is a web application using a MySQL-compatible database and a PHP web stack. Their documented Ubuntu targets and installation requirements differ.

Consideration CMS project Pandora ITSM
Purpose Programming-contest management and evaluation IT service management
Ubuntu version in the documented procedure Ubuntu 24.04 Ubuntu Server 22.04
Database PostgreSQL 9.4 or later MySQL 8 or later in general requirements; detailed procedure uses Percona Server
Application stack or runtime Python 3.11 or later, Isolate 2.0 or later, and cgroupv2-capable kernel PHP 8 or later in general requirements; detailed procedure uses PHP-FPM and PHP 8.1, plus Apache
Installation approach Dedicated account and project installer, install.py Manual Apache/PHP-FPM/Percona procedure or vendor-listed automated script run as root
Operational focus Database configuration, secret key, worker isolation, and contest-service layout Database and web-console setup; carefully assess any instruction to disable host protections

If you meant a conventional website content management system, or a different ITSM product, these instructions do not establish its Ubuntu installation steps. Identify the software name and supported Ubuntu release from that product’s own documentation rather than assuming that “CMS” or “ITSM” points to a particular application.
