You can install OpenAI’s official ChatGPT desktop app on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or 26.04 LTS using the matching x64 or ARM64 .deb package and apt. For a terminal-based coding workflow, OpenAI also offers Codex CLI for Linux as a separate install.
Choose the desktop app or Codex CLI

The Linux desktop app is in public preview, according to OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app for Linux documentation. The CLI is a separate route; you do not need to install the graphical app to use its Codex CLI quickstart.
Install the official ChatGPT desktop app
OpenAI’s Linux desktop guide lists Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Download the Ubuntu/Debian package for your processor architecture, then install it with apt.
- Check your processor architecture. Open a terminal and run
uname -m. If the result isx86_64, choose x64; if it isaarch64orarm64, choose ARM64. - Download the matching package. In OpenAI’s Linux desktop app guide, choose the Ubuntu/Debian
.debdownload for x64 or ARM64. - Install the package. In a terminal, change to your Downloads folder and run the command for your architecture:
cd ~/Downloads sudo apt install ./chatgpt_amd64.debFor ARM64, use
chatgpt_arm64.debin place ofchatgpt_amd64.deb. - Launch ChatGPT and sign in. Open ChatGPT from the applications menu or run
chatgptin a terminal, then sign in with your ChatGPT account.
Use the package linked from OpenAI’s guide rather than an unofficial PPA or wrapper. The documented installation configures OpenAI’s signed package repository for subsequent app updates.

Update the desktop app
After installation, refresh Ubuntu’s package metadata and upgrade ChatGPT with:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --only-upgrade chatgptInstall Codex CLI on Linux

OpenAI’s release notes say browser actions work in the built-in browser or Chrome, but controlling other desktop applications is not yet supported. The desktop app also has experimental native Wayland support: it uses XWayland when available. To explicitly try native Wayland, launch it with chatgpt --ozone-platform=wayland. Floating windows, window positioning, focus, and keyboard shortcuts may not work fully in that mode. See the Linux app guide and ChatGPT release notes for current details.
