Before you begin, back up important files, get the live environment online, and identify the exact disk you intend to use: disk configuration can erase or repartition storage.
Before you start
Use the current official Arch Linux ISO and follow Arch Linux’s instructions to verify and write it to installation media. The ISO can be booted from a USB flash drive, optical disc, or PXE network boot; choose a method supported by your computer. The documentation does not specify a minimum USB capacity or a preferred brand.
- Back up files on the target computer, especially if you may change its partitions.
- Prepare the ISO on the chosen installation medium using the current official instructions.
- Boot the computer from that medium. The firmware and boot-menu steps vary by device.
The archinstall project recommends running the installer from the official ISO. Its guided installer is the default entry point; the documented launch command is archinstall (guided installation documentation).
Get network access in the live environment
Connect to the internet before starting the installer. The guided installer does not configure Wi-Fi before installation begins. If you use Wi-Fi, connect from the live environment using the current Arch Linux networking guidance; wired networking may work without additional setup, depending on the hardware. Confirm that the connection works before proceeding (archinstall guided installation documentation).

Run the guided installer
- At the official ISO’s live shell, run
archinstall. - Follow the current on-screen menus. Depending on your needs, configure language, mirrors, disk layout, bootloader, swap, users, profile, additional packages, and timezone.
- Inspect each choice before moving on, particularly any setting that affects disks, encryption, boot, or user credentials.
The official ISO environment runs as root by default. The project documents using sudo when launching archinstall from an existing system, but this tutorial’s standard path is to run it from the official ISO (archinstall README). Menu labels and available options may change because the project documentation follows its rolling master branch; check the live ISO’s menus and current documentation if they differ.
Choose disk configuration with care
Disk selection is the most consequential part of the setup. Before starting installation, identify the intended device by its name and capacity, understand whether the selected layout will erase or repartition it, and check that the partition mountpoints are correct. The installer supports guided choices as well as manual partitioning and disk encryption (guided installation documentation).

- Installing on a disk you can erase: Select the intended disk and review the proposed layout carefully. Do not assume a selected device is the right one based on its position in a menu.
- Keeping another operating system or data: Use a layout appropriate to the existing partitions and verify every partition and mountpoint before committing. If you cannot confidently identify them, stop rather than guess.
- Advanced pre-mounted setup: The documentation says that when
disk_confighas no entries, the guided installer uses what is already mounted under/mnt/archinstallwithout performing disk operations. This behavior assumes that the required storage setup is already in place; it is not a beginner shortcut.
Windows dual boot
The archinstall README’s documented approach uses unallocated space and manual partitioning: create a Linux partition, mount the new root partition at /, and mount the existing Boot/ESP partition at /boot. Preserve the Windows partitions and check that the machine’s actual UEFI and EFI System Partition layout matches the setup you intend to use. Review the complete configuration before proceeding; the README’s outline does not replace inspecting your own disk (archinstall README).
Set up users and optional profiles
Create the user accounts and choose only the optional settings that suit the installation. Profiles are preconfigured selections; inspect the current menu or the project’s profile definitions to see what a particular selection installs. Do not rely on an assumed package list, because profiles and options can change (guided installation documentation).

Keep general answers and secrets separate if you save configuration: the project distinguishes user_configuration.json from user_credentials.json. The README says account passwords saved in the credentials file are hashed with yescrypt. A disk-encryption password cannot be stored only as a hash for installation, so it must be available in plaintext for the installer to apply it. Protect saved credentials, use the documented option to encrypt the credentials file where appropriate, and never share credentials in a configuration URL or screenshot (archinstall README).
Preview or reuse configuration
You can make menu selections interactively or use saved JSON answers. Interactive choices are straightforward to inspect during a one-off installation. Saved answers can make repeated setups quicker, but must match the schema and hardware of the ISO and machine you are using.

The project documents archinstall --dry-run as a way to simulate a guided run without permanent actions and save configuration. Use it to review reusable settings before applying them, then verify the configuration keys against the version on the live ISO (archinstall README).
Review, install, and reboot
At the installer’s final review, pause and confirm the choices that could affect data or whether the machine boots:

- The target disk is the intended device, and its proposed partitioning matches your plan.
- Existing partitions and data to preserve are not selected for destructive changes.
- Encryption and partition mountpoints are correct.
- Boot settings match the machine’s firmware and intended setup.
- The user and network choices are correct, and any saved secrets are protected.
Start the installation only after those checks. When it finishes, follow the live environment’s displayed instructions to leave the installer and reboot; remove or disconnect the installation medium when instructed so the machine boots from its installed system. Exact menus and successful boot behavior depend on the ISO version, hardware, firmware, and selected configuration.
