Cassandra’s official installation guide documents Docker Desktop as the Windows route, rather than a native Windows server installation. The steps below start a local Cassandra 5.0 container, connect with its included CQL shell, and optionally keep database files in a Windows folder.
What you need before installing Cassandra
This setup runs Cassandra inside a Linux container; it does not install Cassandra as a native Windows service. Docker Desktop uses WSL 2 by default, and you can run Docker commands from PowerShell or Command Prompt without installing a separate Linux distribution. See Cassandra’s 5.0 installation guide.
Docker’s Windows requirements documentation lists WSL 2 version 2.1.5 or later and Windows 11 Enterprise, Pro, or Education version 23H2 (build 22631) or higher. It also lists a 64-bit processor with SLAT, 8 GB of RAM, and hardware virtualization enabled in BIOS or UEFI. Docker says Windows Home and Education support Linux containers only; that is sufficient for Cassandra’s Linux image. Requirements may change, so check Docker Desktop’s current Windows installation requirements before proceeding.
- Open PowerShell and run
wsl --versionto inspect your WSL installation. - If WSL is missing or out of date, follow Microsoft’s WSL setup instructions.
- Install Docker Desktop for Windows, keep or select the WSL 2 backend, and start Docker Desktop.
You do not need to install Java on Windows for this container-based setup: Cassandra runs inside the image. Cassandra 5.0’s published binary releases are built with Java 11; its 5.0 guide says Java 11 and 17 are supported run versions for Java 11 builds, while Java 17 builds are experimental in CI. Python 3.8–3.13 is relevant if you install cqlsh on the Windows host, but the container includes a CQL shell you can use instead. See the Cassandra install guide and Cassandra Java version guidance.

Start Cassandra 5.0 in Docker Desktop
After Docker Desktop is running, open PowerShell and pull and start the official Cassandra 5.0 image:
docker pull cassandra:5.0
docker run --name cassandra-local -d -p 9042:9042 cassandra:5.0The 5.0 image tag follows the Cassandra 5.0 series and can advance to a newer patch release. If you need repeatable image contents for a tutorial or development environment, use a specific patch tag instead. The official image documentation lists supported tags and explains how to start a named container: Cassandra on Docker Hub.

The -p 9042:9042 option publishes Cassandra’s usual CQL client port from the container to the Windows host. This lets local clients connect through the mapped port.
Wait for initialization
A running container is not necessarily ready to accept database connections. Follow its logs while Cassandra initializes:

docker logs -f cassandra-localWhen the logs indicate initialization has completed, press Ctrl+C to stop following the output. This stops the log view, not the Cassandra container. The image documentation warns that a new database does not accept connections until initialization finishes.
Open the CQL shell
Run the included CQL shell from PowerShell:
docker exec -it cassandra-local cqlshYou can now issue CQL commands against the local server. To leave the shell, enter exit. The Docker image documentation shows this docker exec method for connecting with cqlsh: Cassandra on Docker Hub.

Keep Cassandra data when replacing the container
By default, the image stores database files inside the container at /var/lib/cassandra. If you remove and recreate a container without mounting storage, its writable layer is not a durable place to keep data. For local persistence, create a Windows directory such as C:cassandra-data and mount it at the Cassandra data path:
docker run --name cassandra-local -d -p 9042:9042 -v C:cassandra-data:/var/lib/cassandra cassandra:5.0This PowerShell example adapts the host-directory mount pattern documented for the image. For valuable data, use deliberately managed storage and a backup plan; a local folder mount alone is not a backup. See the image’s storage documentation.

Fix common setup problems
Docker commands fail or cannot reach the Docker engine
- Confirm Docker Desktop is installed and running.
- Check that its WSL 2 backend is enabled.
- Run
wsl --version; update WSL if it does not meet Docker’s current minimum.

cqlsh cannot connect just after startup
Wait for initialization to finish, then inspect the server output with docker logs -f cassandra-local. The image documentation explicitly notes that Cassandra will not accept connections until the new database has initialized: Cassandra on Docker Hub.
Data is missing after recreating the container
Check that the run command mounted a persistent Windows directory or Docker volume to /var/lib/cassandra. Data kept only in the removed container’s writable layer will not carry over.
A Java error appears in a separate Windows installation
The procedure here avoids a host-side Cassandra runtime. If you are instead trying a separate server installation, check the Java compatibility guidance for the specific Cassandra release; Cassandra 5.0’s documented Java guidance is at Cassandra’s Java version page.
