You can install an app from an unverified developer using Android’s advanced installation flow, but it is safer to stop unless you can independently confirm who made the app and where it came from. Google’s current process requires enabling Allow apps from unverified developers in Developer options, waiting through a one-time 24-hour security delay, and acknowledging Android’s warning if you proceed. The exact menu path can vary by device and Android version.

Before you install: decide whether to trust the app

An “unverified developer” warning is a reason to pause, not a routine prompt to dismiss. Google recommends installing apps from verified developers and warns that scammers may pose as bank-fraud agents, technical support, or delivery services to persuade people to install inauthentic apps.

  • Verify the source. Prefer a trusted app store or the developer’s genuine official website. A search-result advertisement, unsolicited message, file-sharing link, or lookalike domain does not establish that a download is authentic.
  • Verify the developer separately. For a financial, delivery, workplace, or support app, confirm the app name and developer with the organization using a trusted phone number or official website—not contact details in the message that prompted the download.
  • Do not let urgency decide. A caller or app page that says the warning is routine does not make the download safe. If you cannot establish the app’s identity and source, do not install it.

Google’s guidance on app installs from unverified developers describes the warning and the risks of impersonation.

Install through Android’s unverified-developer flow

  1. Open Settings and turn on Developer options. The steps for revealing Developer options vary by device, so consult your phone manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find the setting.
  2. Open System > Developer options. Enable Allow apps from unverified developers. If your device uses different labels or menu placement, follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Complete the one-time security delay. Follow Android’s on-screen instructions. Google says this setup takes 24 hours and includes safeguards intended to help you make an informed, independent decision.
  4. Choose how long to leave the flow enabled. After the delay, Google’s process lets you keep it on for seven days or indefinitely. Choose deliberately rather than assuming the setting will turn itself off.
  5. Install the app and read the warning. Android may still show a warning during installation. Tap Install anyway only if you have checked the app and developer independently and accept the remaining risk.

These are Google’s current advanced-flow labels; they may not appear on every device or Android build in exactly the same place.

Keep Play Protect enabled

Google Play Protect can check for potentially harmful apps, warn you, and remove apps if necessary. It is a useful layer of protection, not proof that a download is authentic or safe. Google says apps installed outside Google Play may cause the device to send it information that helps protect against harmful apps, including app-related URLs, log information, device ID, Android version, and IP address. See Google’s Android app download help for its explanation of Play Protect and unknown-source risks.

Do not disable Play Protect to get around an installation warning. A scan cannot establish that an app really belongs to the organization it claims to represent.

Do not confuse this with the older “Install unknown apps” permission

Android has a separate, older sideloading permission that controls whether a particular source—such as a browser or file manager—may install apps. It is not the same setting as Google’s current advanced flow for apps from unverified developers.

Android version Older sideloading control What to know
Android 8.0 (API 26) and newer Source-specific permission in the Install unknown apps system settings screen Permission is granted to a particular source. Menu labels and placement can vary by manufacturer.
Android 7.1.1 (API 25) and older Unknown sources security setting Some versions show a confirmation for each installation; Android Developers advises allowing one installation at a time when that option is available.

These version distinctions come from Android Developers’ alternative distribution guidance. If your device’s menus differ, use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming the newer developer-verification flow and legacy permission are interchangeable.

Understand the staged developer-verification rollout

Google’s developer-verification changes are rolling out in stages, not as a rule that already blocks every unverified app on every Android device worldwide. The scope depends on region, device certification, and installation source.

  • Google’s Android Help page says that starting in September 2026, apps downloaded from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand must be registered by a verified developer to install and receive updates. It names Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps as initial participating stores. It describes a 2027 expansion across all install sources.
  • A separate Google Android Developer Console help page says protections go live on September 30, 2026, in Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, and also describes an expansion to all apps on certified Android devices in 2027. That page does not include Brazil in its initial-country statement.

Because Google’s two pages differ on the initial country list and start wording, treat this as a region-specific staged rollout and check the applicable Google page for your location: Android developer verification for users and Android developer verification for developers. The Android Help page lists exceptions including AOSP and non-certified devices, places where Google Mobile Services are unsupported, and territories subject to trade sanctions.

Verification checks a developer’s identity and app registration; it does not certify an app’s content or behavior as harmless. Google says advanced users can still permit an unverified developer’s app through the acknowledged-risk flow after one-time setup. Developers and power users can also use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to install modified or unverified apps on their own devices, but that is a testing route, not the normal consumer installation procedure.

Check whether your device is Play Protect certified

Device certification and Play Protect app scanning are separate. Certification means a device passed Android compatibility testing and is eligible to include licensed Google apps. Google warns that uncertified devices may not receive Android system or app updates, may have apps or features that do not work correctly, and may not have secure backups.
