To sync Dropbox with Windows 11, install the Dropbox desktop app, sign in, and use the Dropbox folder in File Explorer. Choose which files stay online-only and which are stored on your PC for offline access, then check the Dropbox status icons to confirm syncing.
Check Windows 11 compatibility
Dropbox supports its standard desktop app on Windows 11, including computers with ARM processors, but not when Windows is running in S mode. For S mode, Dropbox directs users to separate Dropbox Lite requirements. Check your Windows edition before downloading the standard app.
Install Dropbox and sign in
- Download and install the Dropbox desktop app.
- Sign in to an existing Dropbox account or create one, then follow the setup prompts to choose what to sync.
- Open File Explorer and select the Dropbox folder. You can also open Dropbox from its taskbar icon.
Dropbox runs in the background to sync changes. The company says changes made in the desktop app sync across the places you access Dropbox, including your account on dropbox.com.
Choose which files are available offline
Online-only files remain in Dropbox without using space on your computer until you open them. Opening one downloads it and makes it available offline, so make sure the PC has enough free storage for the download. Files marked available offline use local storage but can be opened without an internet connection.

In the Dropbox desktop app, you can set files or folders to online-only or make them available offline. Dropbox also lets you set future items added directly to the Dropbox root to be online-only by default. See its guides to freeing up space with online-only files and making files available offline.
Understand what happens when you work offline
You can open and edit files that are available offline without an internet connection. Changes made while the computer is offline will not appear on your other synced devices until it reconnects; Dropbox says those updates sync automatically once the computer is back online.

Check sync status in Windows
File Explorer icons show the status of individual files and folders. Dropbox’s sync-status guide explains these common indicators:
- Cloud: The item is synced but online-only. Opening it downloads it.
- Green check: The item is synced and available offline.
- Circular arrows: The item is uploading, downloading, waiting, or encountering a sync issue. Check Dropbox’s status information rather than assuming the arrows always signal an error.
- Red X: The item cannot update or sync.
The Dropbox taskbar icon shows the account’s overall status, such as syncing, fully synced, or paused. While syncing is paused, changes will not update elsewhere.

Investigate syncing or storage problems
Open Dropbox’s desktop Sync & storage dashboard to review progress, possible issues, and hard-drive use. It also provides controls for managing sync and storage.
If File Explorer is missing Dropbox features such as status icons, context menus, or the ability to open online-only files, check whether the app was installed with administrator privileges. Dropbox identifies administrator privileges as necessary for full desktop-app functionality, including those integrations.
