For most people, the simplest way to install a VPN on an iPhone is to download the VPN provider’s official app from the App Store and follow its setup prompts. If your provider or workplace gives you specific connection details, you can instead add a configuration in Settings. Work and school profiles need extra care because they can control more than the VPN connection.
Choose the right iPhone VPN setup method

Install a VPN using its iPhone app
- Find the official app. Open the App Store, search for the VPN service you intend to use, and check that the listing is the provider’s official app before downloading it.
- Install and open the app. Sign in or create an account if the provider requires one. Follow the provider’s current in-app setup instructions; screens and account requirements are service-specific.
- Review any request to add a VPN configuration. iOS may ask permission for the app to add a VPN configuration. Allow it only if you chose and trust that service. The configuration lets the app establish and manage a VPN connection; it is not a reason to approve an unfamiliar app.
- Connect and check the status. Use the app’s connection control. To inspect or manage the configuration in iOS, open Settings and look for VPN controls; labels and available controls can vary by iOS version and setup.

Add a VPN configuration manually
Manual setup is for cases where your VPN provider or IT administrator has supplied the exact connection values. Apple’s instructions do not provide generic server addresses, usernames, passwords, shared secrets, or certificates: get those from the organization or service that operates the VPN.

- Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN.
- Tap Add VPN Configuration.
- Choose the type and enter the server, account, authentication, and other values supplied by your provider or administrator.
- Save the configuration, then return to the VPN controls to connect if the supplied instructions call for it.
If you do not see the expected choices, or your provider requires its app or a profile, follow that provider’s instructions rather than guessing at settings. Apple lists IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN through an appropriate App Store client among supported Apple-platform approaches; the available protocol and authentication depend on the VPN server and management setup. Handle work and school profiles carefully
A configuration profile can provide settings for a corporate or school network, including VPN-related settings. When iPhone asks to install a profile, review the information it shows about the profile’s contents and install it only if you trust the organization that supplied it. You can inspect installed profiles at Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.

Deleting a profile also deletes settings, apps, and data associated with it. If a profile belongs to your employer or school, ask its IT administrator before removing it. Apple: About VPNs and device management

Per-app VPN and Always On VPN are management capabilities for organization-managed deployments, not universal switches for every personal iPhone. Apple describes Always On VPN for iOS devices that are managed through device management and supervised. Ask your administrator whether your device and network use these features. Know what a VPN does—and what it does not
A VPN can encrypt and route certain network traffic and may hide your IP address from websites and services. It does not make you anonymous, protect every connection, prevent malware, or replace strong account security. If connectivity changes after installing a VPN or profile, Apple recommends checking VPN and other third-party security software, then searching Settings for related controls. These checks may help identify a conflict, but they are not a guaranteed fix.

- In Settings, search for VPN, profile, firewall, and filter to find relevant installed settings.
- Check whether third-party security software or another VPN is installed and could be affecting the connection.
- If the configuration is managed by work or school, contact the administrator before changing or deleting it.
- For an app-specific error or setup prompt, consult the VPN provider’s support instructions.
