You can use a portable USB-C external SSD to store and run games on either a Steam Deck or a ROG Ally, but the setup is different: Steam Deck uses SteamOS and its desktop environment, while ROG Ally uses Windows and the launcher that installed each game. Keep the SSD connected while installing or playing games stored on it. Official documentation clearly covers microSD installation, but does not provide a complete external-SSD game-library setup for both handhelds; the steps below separate confirmed support from general Windows and Steam navigation.
Before you start: external SSD or microSD?
A portable external SSD connects by cable, so it can be shared between devices but must stay attached whenever you access games stored on it. A microSD card sits in the handheld and is the more convenient onboard option for games you want available without a cable.
| Consideration | External SSD | microSD |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Connect over USB-C; the drive must remain connected to use its games. | Fits in the handheld’s card reader and stays installed. |
| Documented game-install support | The cited Valve and ASUS guides do not provide a full external-SSD library setup. | ASUS explicitly documents installing games to microSD on ROG Ally; Steam documents formatting a microSD card on Steam Deck. |
| Library handling | Use the relevant operating system and game launcher to install and locate games. Exact external-drive behavior depends on the device and launcher. | Use the device’s documented microSD support and the launcher’s install-location controls. |
| Charging while connected | Whether you can charge at the same time depends on the handheld, adapter and port arrangement. A USB-C hub with power delivery is optional if your setup needs it. | Does not occupy the USB-C port. |
| Speed and battery impact | No comparable speed or battery figures are established here. | No comparable speed or battery figures are established here. |
If you want the drive to serve as a shared game library, choose a portable USB-C external SSD, confirm that its cable fits your setup, and leave room in your arrangement for charging if needed. No particular SSD model or speed advantage is established here.
Install and run games from an external SSD on Steam Deck
Steam Deck’s Desktop Mode functions like a normal PC: Steam says you can browse the internet, install applications and run programs outside Steam. That makes Desktop Mode the relevant place to work with software beyond the regular Steam interface, but Valve’s basic-use guide does not give a specific external-USB-SSD game-library procedure or promise how a drive will be mounted or remembered after restart. See Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

Use Desktop Mode for general desktop tasks
- Connect the external SSD to the Steam Deck’s USB-C port. If your charging arrangement requires it, use a compatible adapter or hub that allows charging and the drive connection together.
- Open the Steam Deck’s power menu and choose Switch to Desktop to enter Desktop Mode. Valve describes this mode as a PC desktop, but its cited guide does not specify the external-drive setup beyond that general context.
- Use Steam or the relevant game launcher to choose an install location on the external drive if that application recognizes it. The exact external-drive and library steps are not established by the cited Steam Deck support guide; do not assume the microSD setup below applies to USB storage.
- After installation, launch the game through its launcher while the SSD is connected. If a title is not visible in the regular Steam interface, check the launcher or desktop environment where you installed it rather than assuming the game was removed.
Use Steam’s documented microSD option instead
For a simpler onboard expansion route, Steam documents this format path: Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. This instruction is specifically for a microSD card; it does not establish the formatting, mounting or library steps for an external SSD.
Install and run games from an external SSD on ROG Ally
ROG Ally runs Windows and supports major PC game launchers. ASUS says games downloaded through supported launchers are automatically imported into Armoury Crate SE’s Game Library. Its FAQ specifically confirms that games can be installed to microSD, but does not give the same explicit assurance or a complete setup guide for external USB SSD game libraries. ASUS’s ROG Ally Series Frequently Asked Questions was last updated June 3, 2026.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Install through the game’s Windows launcher
- Connect the external SSD to the Ally. If you also want to charge while it is connected, check whether your specific adapter or hub supports that arrangement.
- Open the launcher you use, such as Steam, Xbox, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, the EA App or GOG Galaxy. ASUS lists these among the launchers supported by ROG Ally.
- Start the game installation in that launcher and select the external SSD as the destination if the launcher offers it. This is general Windows and launcher behavior, not a complete external-SSD procedure documented by ASUS; available choices and exact labels can vary by launcher and version.
- When installation finishes, launch the game from its launcher or Armoury Crate SE while the drive remains connected.
Understand Armoury Crate SE’s library
Armoury Crate SE is a library interface, not the installer or uninstaller of record. ASUS says installed games are added automatically; to add a missing entry manually, use Manage Library > Add Game/App to Library. Removing a tile from that library does not uninstall the game. To uninstall, use the game’s launcher or Windows Add or Remove Programs.
Use the documented microSD alternative
ASUS explicitly says ROG Ally users can install games to a microSD card. Its FAQ describes a UHS-II or backward-compatible microSD reader. If avoiding a cable is more important than using a shared external drive, microSD is the documented onboard storage option.

What happens if you unplug the SSD?
Games installed on an external SSD are not available to launch from that drive while it is disconnected. A launcher may show the game as unavailable or ask you to locate or reinstall it; the exact response depends on the launcher. Do not unplug the drive while a game, download, update or launcher operation is using it. Close the game and relevant launcher activity first, then disconnect the drive. Reconnect it before opening the game again.

Which setup should you choose?
- Choose an external SSD if you want portable storage that can connect to either handheld and are comfortable keeping it cabled during use.
- Choose microSD if you prefer storage that stays inside the device; both Steam and ASUS document relevant microSD support, with ASUS explicitly confirming game installation on Ally.
- Check charging and port needs before buying accessories. A hub with power delivery may help some arrangements, but it is not universally required.
- Keep the operating systems distinct: Deck guidance here concerns SteamOS Desktop Mode, while Ally guidance concerns Windows launchers and Armoury Crate SE. ASUS’s documentation does not establish ROG Ally as an officially supported SteamOS device; its stated launcher support applies to the Ally’s normal Windows use.
