Install it, import the game’s .jar file with the + button, start the imported title, then adjust its virtual keypad, scaling and performance settings.
What you need
- An Android device running Android 4.0 or newer, which is the requirement stated by the J2ME-Loader project.
- J2ME Loader installed from Google Play or another trusted distribution of its open-source project.
- A J2ME game file in
.jarformat. Obtain commercial games only from a source that gives you the legal right to use them; a file being described as “abandonware” does not by itself establish distribution permission.
J2ME Loader is designed for Java ME games, not standard desktop Java applications or Android APK files. Compatibility remains title-specific because older games may depend on handset-specific APIs, graphics modes or keypad behavior.
JAR and JAD: what each file does
Oracle’s Java ME documentation defines a MIDlet suite as a Java archive (JAR) distributed with a Java Application Descriptor (JAD). The JAR contains the compiled classes, resources and manifest. The JAD contains attributes used to identify, retrieve and install the MIDlets.
Many games can be imported directly from the JAR in J2ME Loader. Keep a matching JAD file when one is supplied, and use it if the emulator or the game requests it. Do not rename an unrelated JAD to match a JAR: descriptor values such as the suite name, version and JAR size are expected to correspond.

Install a J2ME game in J2ME Loader
- Install J2ME Loader. The project describes it as an Android J2ME emulator with virtual-keyboard support, per-application settings and scaling. The Google Play listing recorded an update date of 7 August 2024; store metadata can change.
- Download the game’s
.jarto your phone from a source authorized to distribute it. If the download is a ZIP archive, extract it first so that J2ME Loader can access the actual JAR. - Open J2ME Loader and tap the + icon.
- Use the file picker to browse to the downloaded
.jar, then select it. - Wait for the emulator to import or convert the MIDlet. The imported title should appear in the game list.
- Tap the game and press Start to launch it. Some walkthroughs show pressing Start twice during the first launch flow.
- Open the title’s per-game settings before playing if the image is stretched, the keypad is difficult to use or performance is poor.
Configure touch controls and the screen
Map the old keypad
J2ME games commonly expect numeric keys, directional arrows, soft keys, OK, * and #. In J2ME Loader’s per-application controls, move or resize the virtual buttons until the game’s navigation, menu and action keys are reachable. If a key press is ignored, enlarge that button, move it away from another touch target and test again.
Fix an awkward aspect ratio
Use the per-game scaling options to choose a readable size and an aspect ratio that does not hide the edges of the original screen. A game designed for a 176×208 or 240×320 handset may look soft or leave unused space on a modern display; that is a scaling limitation rather than proof that the JAR is damaged.

Use a physical controller only as an option
A Bluetooth controller can be more comfortable for games built around a keypad, but it is not required. J2ME Loader’s virtual keyboard and per-game key layout are the basic control method.
Fix slow graphics, flicker and missed presses
The game runs slowly
- Open the game’s settings and disable filtering. The J2ME-Loader project recommends this when a title is too slow.
- Reduce screen scaling or select a simpler rendering option if the device struggles with a large enlarged image.
- Close other demanding Android apps and relaunch the MIDlet.
Images flicker or redraw incorrectly
Enable Immediate processing mode in the title’s settings. The project README specifically recommends this mode for image flicker.

Buttons are too small, too large or do not register
Adjust the individual key layout and screen scale before replacing the game file. Google Play feedback reports both oversized and undersized controls and occasional missed key presses, so a layout change can solve an apparent input failure.
The game will not import or start
- Confirm that the file is a J2ME
.jar, not an APK, desktop-Java JAR or compressed archive that still needs extraction. - If a JAD is present, keep it with the matching JAR and try the package again when the emulator asks for descriptor information.
- Re-download the file from a legitimate source if the archive may be incomplete.
- Check whether the title appears on J2ME Loader’s tested-game or known-bugs lists. A failed launch can reflect an unsupported handset API or graphics feature rather than a bad installation.
How compatible is J2ME Loader?
The project says J2ME Loader supports most 2D and 3D games and maintains separate lists for tested touchscreen games, non-touchscreen games and games with bugs. “Most” is not a guarantee for every MIDlet. Games may still fail because they expect a particular keypad, vendor API, screen mode, sound implementation or 3D engine.

The Google Play description qualifies 3D support and specifically states that Mascot Capsule 3D games do not work in that listing. Treat 3D compatibility as more limited than ordinary 2D compatibility. The listing reported 4.3 stars from 28.1k reviews when captured; ratings and review counts are volatile store metadata, not a compatibility guarantee for a particular game.

Practical expectations
Start with the JAR, retain any matching JAD, and expect to tune controls and rendering on a game-by-game basis. J2ME Loader is a strong first choice for Android 4.0-and-newer devices, especially for 2D titles, but no emulator can guarantee every old MIDlet will work exactly as it did on its original phone.
