In every case, preview the result and make a backup before publishing or editing code.
Before you install or change a theme
A theme controls a website’s visual presentation and reusable layouts. First confirm the theme is compatible with your platform, and check its license and support terms—especially if it is paid or comes from a third party. Preview it before making it live. If you plan to customize theme code, make a backup first.
The main difference is how each platform handles the theme:

Install a theme in WordPress
These instructions apply to WordPress sites where you can access the Administration Screens. WordPress offers a theme directory search, ZIP upload, and FTP installation.

- Sign in to your WordPress Administration Screens.
- Go to Appearance > Themes, then select Add New.
- Search or filter for a theme. Select Preview to inspect it before installing.
- Select Install for the theme you want.
To install a theme ZIP saved on your computer, open the Themes screen, select Add New, then use Upload Theme to choose the ZIP. WordPress also documents installation through an FTP client: extract the theme files and transfer them to the site using FTP. Follow WordPress.org’s theme installation guide for the documented approaches.
Upload a theme ZIP to Shopify
A Shopify theme added to your store is a draft, so you can customize and preview it before making it the published theme.

- In your Shopify admin, open Online Store.
- Choose Import theme > Upload zip file.
- Select the theme ZIP on your computer and upload it.
- Open the added draft to customize and preview it. Publish it only when it is ready to replace the current theme.
You can also add a free theme or try or buy a paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store. Shopify recommends duplicating a theme as a backup before customizing it; use the theme actions in your admin to make the copy. See Shopify’s guide to adding themes for the available options.
What changes when you switch Shopify themes?
Shopify keeps products, collections, menus, pages, and blog posts separate from the theme, so changing themes does not delete that content. Theme settings—including global colors and fonts—as well as wording, code customizations, and templates are associated with each theme. Review them on the theme you intend to publish; do not assume customizations made to another theme will carry over. Shopify Help Center

In Wix Editor, open Site Design > Change Theme, then select a theme. You can customize its fonts and colors. Wix says themed elements added through Add Elements follow the selected theme. Its theme instructions cover the editor workflow.

Theme changes can affect layouts and visual settings even when the site’s content is stored separately. Before publishing a change, inspect the pages and reusable layouts that matter to your site, then correct any styling or layout problems. For Shopify, use the draft preview before publishing; for WordPress, use the theme preview where available.
