The Samsung 870 EVO is a SATA SSD, not an M.2 drive; check for a compatible drive bay and SATA connection before opening your computer. The instructions below cover Samsung’s desktop-PC sequence. Laptop access and replaceability depend on the exact model, so use its manufacturer’s service manual for the correct procedure.
Check compatibility and gather what you need
Samsung lists the 500GB 870 EVO as a 2.5-inch SSD measuring 100 × 69.85 × 6.8 mm. Its SATA 6 Gb/s interface is compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s and SATA 1.5 Gb/s interfaces. Check the computer’s specifications or service manual to confirm that it has a suitable SATA connection and enough physical room for the drive.
Samsung lists the 870 EVO installation kit as unavailable, so do not assume the package includes a mounting bracket, SATA data cable, or other installation parts. What you need depends on the computer: a desktop may already have an available SATA data cable and power connector, while its drive bay may require a particular mounting solution. Check the computer and its documentation before buying accessories.
Have the computer manufacturer’s service manual available for its case-opening instructions, drive-bay access, and model-specific screws. Follow the maker’s safety instructions when opening and working inside the computer; Samsung’s short PC sequence does not cover every chassis or safety procedure.

Install the 870 EVO in a desktop PC
Samsung Semiconductor’s published PC upgrade instructions give this sequence. Follow your PC maker’s manual for the details of opening the case and accessing the drive bay.
- Open the PC case. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific computer.
- Locate the drive slot. Identify the suitable 2.5-inch drive position and its SSD guide or mounting arrangement.
- Align and install the SSD. Fit the 870 EVO to the SSD guide as directed by the computer’s design.
- Secure the drive. Samsung’s instructions say to tighten the screw on the SSD guide.
- Connect SATA data and power. Samsung’s instruction reads: “Step 5. Connect the SATA cable and power.” Connect the data cable to a suitable SATA port and the drive’s power connector as your computer’s documentation specifies.
After installation, close the case according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The exact bay layout, screws, connectors, and access method vary by PC model.

Installing the drive in a laptop
Do not apply the desktop steps to a laptop without checking its documentation. Look up the exact laptop model’s service manual and confirm both that its drive is replaceable and how to access it. Laptop designs and teardown procedures vary, and the Samsung PC instructions do not establish a universal laptop procedure.
Initialize, migrate, and manage the SSD
Once the drive is physically installed, the steps for preparing it depend on your operating system and whether you are adding storage or replacing an existing drive. Samsung lists Data Migration Software for SSD upgrades and describes Magician as offering SSD management, drive-health tracking, and firmware updates. Check Samsung’s support page for your region for current downloads and instructions; software availability and versions can change.

Samsung’s UK support page lists an Installation Guide version 1.0 dated 14 July 2026, a Data Sheet version 2.0 dated 16 April 2026, and Magician 9.0.2 downloads dated 15 September 2026 for Windows and macOS and 22 September 2026 for Android. These are the listings on that regional page, not a guarantee that the same files or versions apply in every market.
870 EVO specifications, endurance, and warranty
For the 500GB model, Samsung’s UK product specifications accessed in 2026 list sequential read speeds of up to 560 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 530 MB/s. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results; Samsung says actual performance can vary with system hardware and configuration.

Samsung lists the following total bytes written (TBW) limits by capacity. TBW is a published endurance rating, not a prediction of how long an individual drive will last.

Samsung’s product page states a limited warranty of five years or the capacity-specific TBW limit, whichever comes first. Verify the warranty terms for your exact capacity and market, since regional product pages and warranty documents can differ.
