There is no universal, safe way to force Windows 10 to install every blocked update. Start with Windows Update’s built-in recovery steps; use Microsoft’s component reset only if simpler fixes fail. For a missing feature update, the Windows Update Assistant may help on supported x86/64 PCs, but it does not bypass compatibility, policy, or support limits.
Start with Windows Update’s built-in checks
- Resume updates if they are paused. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then resume updates or select Check for updates. Microsoft says a pause is temporary; once it ends, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates. See Microsoft’s guidance on pausing updates.
- Restart, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends restarting and running this troubleshooter as general first steps for failed or stuck updates. Follow any instructions it displays, then check for updates again. Check common causes before attempting a reset
A stalled download, an installation failure, and an update that is not offered can have different causes. Check the basics before changing update components:
- Connection: Confirm the PC can access the internet.
- Permissions: Sign in with an administrator account if the update or troubleshooting step requires it.
- Security software: If you suspect third-party antivirus is interfering, pause it only temporarily while testing; do not leave the PC unprotected.
- Storage: Free space may be needed to download and install an update. For an upgrade, Microsoft’s 2026 guidance specifies 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade or 20 GB free for a 64-bit upgrade. If the internal drive lacks room, Microsoft says to insert a USB drive. A USB flash drive can help provide space, but it does not bypass compatibility checks or organization policy.
Microsoft lists permissions, connectivity, security software, and storage among possible causes; use any error message or troubleshooter result to narrow down the remedy rather than applying every fix indiscriminately. Its troubleshooting guide also advises backing up important files before advanced repair steps.
Reset Windows Update components if simpler fixes fail
Microsoft documents resetting the update components by stopping the relevant services, renaming their cache folders, and starting the services again. This changes cached update state; it is not a way to override a policy or make an unavailable update appear. Use an administrator Command Prompt, enter each command separately, and restart Windows after the sequence completes.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run these commands one at a time:
net stop bits net stop wuauserv ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak net start bits net start wuauserv - Close Command Prompt and restart the computer. Then return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
Do not delete system folders blindly. Microsoft cautions that this advanced procedure requires administrator permissions and comfort with command-line work. See Microsoft’s component-reset instructions.
Use Update Assistant only when a feature update is missing
If Windows Update has not offered a feature update, Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant is a manual download-and-install route for the latest feature update. It supports x86/64 PCs and does not run on ARM-based PCs. It is not a universal fix for quality updates or a bypass for hardware safeguards. Choose the route that matches the problem

Know when Windows 10 cannot provide the update
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It says that after that date it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. As a result, there may be no free post-support package available to force. An update can also remain unavailable because of a hardware safeguard, organization-managed policy, or unsupported architecture; manually retrying will not remove those restrictions.
