Right-click the item you want to examine and choose Inspect or Inspect Element. Your browser’s developer tools will select the corresponding element in the page’s DOM and show its HTML and CSS. You can also use the element picker in developer tools to point at an item on the page. The exact labels and shortcuts vary by browser and operating system.
Inspect an element in Chrome
- Right-click the page item and choose Inspect, or open DevTools and activate the Inspect mode picker.
- Move the pointer over the page to preview highlighted elements, then click the target. Chrome selects its DOM node in the Elements panel.
- Use the DOM tree to explore the page structure. Check Styles for applicable CSS and Computed or the layout tools for resolved properties and layout details.
Chrome’s picker shortcut is Cmd+Option+C on macOS and Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. Its overlay can report selectors, dimensions, colors, font details, padding, margin, and accessibility cues such as the reported name, role, and keyboard focusability. See Chrome’s Inspect mode guide and the Elements panel overview.
Inspect an element in Firefox
- Right-click the item and select Inspect Element, or open Web Developer Tools and choose the Inspector panel.
- Click the page item to select its corresponding markup in the Inspector.
- Use the Inspector’s controls to examine or experiment with HTML and CSS, the box model, colors, fonts, event listeners, grid and flexbox layouts, and accessibility.
On Windows and Linux, Ctrl+Shift+I or F12 opens Developer Tools; on macOS use Cmd+Option+I. The Inspector can be docked at the bottom or either side of the browser, or opened in a separate window. See Firefox’s instructions for opening the Inspector and its Page Inspector reference.
Inspect an element in Microsoft Edge
- Open DevTools and click the Inspect tool.
- Hover over the rendered page to preview the target, then click it. The Elements tool selects the matching DOM node and displays its CSS styling.
- Inspect the selected node and its styles in the Elements tool.
When DevTools has focus, Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows and Linux, or Command+Shift+C on macOS, activates the picker. Edge’s overlay can show the element name, dimensions, color, font, margin, padding, and accessibility information, including contrast, reported name and role, and keyboard focusability. If an element uses pointer-events: none, hold Shift while hovering to target it. See Microsoft’s Elements tool guide and Inspect tool guide.

Inspect an element in Safari on Mac
- If Safari’s Develop menu is missing, open Safari > Settings > Advanced and select Show features for web developers.
- Open Safari’s developer tools and select the Elements tab.
- Select the page element to examine its DOM and associated styles. Use the Web Inspector’s other controls to inspect computed properties and layout details.
Apple’s guide explains how to access developer tools from Safari’s Develop menu: Use the developer tools in the Develop menu. For the Elements tab and editing behavior, see the WebKit Elements Tab reference.
What the inspector shows—and what edits do
The visible page is rendered from a document structure and style rules. The DOM tree connects what you see to the page’s elements; the Styles panel helps identify CSS that applies to the selected node, while Computed panels show resolved values. Layout tools can make spacing and grid or flexbox relationships easier to understand. Depending on the browser, developer tools also expose event listeners, fonts, and accessibility properties.

You can often change markup or CSS in the inspector to test a hypothesis, such as whether a different margin fixes a gap. Treat these as experiments, not edits to the website’s source: for example, WebKit says CSS changes made in Web Inspector are not preserved across page navigations or Web Inspector sessions. To make a durable change, edit the site’s actual source or use an appropriate saved override workflow.
Use accessibility details as inspection clues
Chrome and Edge’s picker overlays can expose the name and role reported for an element and whether it is keyboard-focusable; they also provide contrast information in relevant contexts. These cues can help you spot issues, but they do not replace checking the experience with keyboard navigation and assistive technology.

Common problems and fixes
- The Inspect option is missing: Try the browser’s developer-tools menu and activate the picker there. The exact context-menu label varies; Firefox uses Inspect Element, while Chrome and Edge commonly use Inspect.
- The shortcut does nothing: Shortcuts vary by browser and operating system. Use the context menu instead, or confirm that DevTools is open and focused where required; Edge documents its picker shortcut when DevTools has focus.
- The wrong node is selected: Use the picker again and click the visible target. Nested elements can occupy the same area, so inspect nearby nodes in the DOM tree to find the precise child or parent.
- A hover target cannot be selected in Edge: If its CSS uses
pointer-events: none, hold Shift while hovering over it. - Safari has no Develop menu: Enable Show features for web developers under Safari > Settings > Advanced.
- A temporary style change disappears: That is expected for inspector experiments. Apply the change in the site’s source or a persistent override mechanism instead.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image or PDF of a page rather than its DOM and CSS, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; it does not replace a browser inspector for examining markup or styles.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

Does Inspect show the original website source file?
It shows the browser’s current document structure and rendered styling. Pages can be modified by scripts after they load, so the inspected DOM may differ from the original HTML response.
