If the live website is available, inspect its CSS and computed styles to recover the colors it actually uses. If you have only a screenshot, sample pixels from clean, flat areas and treat the results as estimates of the displayed colors—not proof of the original CSS values. Then organize the colors by role, rebuild them as CSS variables, and check text contrast.
Choose the right evidence: live page or screenshot
A live page and a screenshot answer different questions. The live page can reveal declared or computed CSS colors tied to particular elements. A screenshot shows the final pixels after rendering, so sampling it can estimate what a viewer saw but usually cannot reveal the original CSS declaration.
| Evidence | What it can tell you | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Live page in browser DevTools | Color declarations and computed styles for selected elements; stylesheet color candidates. | A list of stylesheet colors does not identify which ones are the primary brand colors or what role each one plays. |
| Screenshot eyedropper | The displayed color of a sampled pixel or area. | The pixel may reflect antialiasing, transparency, shadows, gradients, or color-space conversion rather than a base CSS fill. |
Inspect the live page first, if it is available
- Open the page in Chrome or Firefox, then open the browser’s developer tools and enable the element inspection tool.
- Select a background, text element, button, border, or other region whose color you need to identify.
- In Chrome, inspect the selected element’s color declarations in the Styles and Computed views. Chrome’s Inspect mode can also show element properties and contrast details. Chrome Inspect mode documentation.
- Click a color swatch in the Styles panel to open Chrome’s Color Picker. Check whether the value comes from a CSS custom property, and review the page-color palette for other colors found in stylesheets. Chrome Color Picker documentation.
- Record the value and the element or role it belongs to. For example, note whether a color is the page background, a card surface, or the text on a primary button.
Firefox also documents built-in color inspection and selection tools; its interface differs from Chrome’s. See Firefox’s color-inspection guide.
Stylesheet palettes are useful for finding candidates, not assigning design meaning. A page may contain many colors for charts, states, illustrations, or third-party widgets. Tie each candidate to the element where you see it before deciding whether it belongs in your rebuilt palette.

Sample colors when you have only a screenshot
- Open the screenshot in an image editor or color tool with an eyedropper, then sample a broad, uniform area such as the center of a card or a large background region.
- For each color region, sample more than one clean interior point. If values differ slightly, prefer the consistent interior value and treat small differences as possible sampling noise or rendering variation.
- Avoid sampling text edges, thin borders, rounded corners, shadows, gradients, and translucent overlays when your goal is the underlying base fill. Those pixels can be blends of foreground and background colors.
- Write down the sampled color and its visual role, along with a note that it came from a screenshot. Do not label it as the original CSS token unless you independently verify that value on the live page.
Chrome for Developers says its eyedropper samples only in the sRGB color space and clips colors outside that space to the closest value. A sampled value can therefore differ from an original wide-gamut color; that statement describes Chrome’s tool, not every browser’s eyedropper. Chrome Color Picker documentation.
Turn the samples into a usable palette
Build a short inventory by visual role rather than keeping a long, unstructured list of hex values. These roles are a practical reconstruction scheme; the original site may not use those exact token names.

- Page background: the main canvas behind the content.
- Surface: cards, menus, panels, or other elements placed on the background.
- Text: the primary foreground color for content.
- Muted text: secondary labels or supporting copy.
- Primary action: the main button or link color.
- Border: dividers and component outlines.
- Accent: a supporting highlight, if the design uses one.
Compare colors that look nearly identical. If their small differences come from antialiasing or sampling position rather than a meaningful component distinction, consolidate them. Keep distinct values when they serve visibly different roles or states.
Rebuild the palette with CSS variables
Define reusable custom properties, then apply them to the components they represent. Replace the example values below with colors you verified from the live page or estimated from the screenshot.

The hex values in this snippet are illustrative starting values only, not measurements from a particular site. Compare your rendered rebuild against the reference, then adjust the variables rather than making unrelated one-off changes throughout the stylesheet.
Check text contrast in the rebuilt page
Evaluate each actual text and background pair; a palette that looks harmonious is not necessarily readable. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 specifies a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text, with exceptions including inactive controls, purely decorative text, and logotypes. W3C’s explanation of Contrast (Minimum).

Chrome’s Color Picker can display contrast information for text color declarations. When checking contrast, use the specified foreground and background colors: antialiasing can make rendered glyph pixels look fainter than the CSS colors. Passing this criterion addresses text contrast under its stated conditions; it does not establish that every aspect of the page is accessible.

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting palette reconstruction
- The sampled color changes from point to point: you may be crossing a gradient, shadow, translucent layer, or antialiased edge. Sample farther inside a flat region.
- Your screenshot color does not match a live CSS value: the screenshot records rendered pixels, while the live page exposes CSS declarations or computed values. Compare the same element and account for overlays, transparency, and wide-gamut-to-sRGB conversion.
- The browser palette contains too many colors: it surfaces colors found in stylesheets, not a finished brand palette. Inspect elements and assign each candidate a role before keeping it.
- Your rebuilt text looks faint despite a plausible color: check the specified foreground/background pair rather than judging individual antialiased glyph pixels, and verify the contrast ratio.
- One sampled value seems wrong for the whole component: the component may use separate colors for fill, border, text, hover, or disabled states. Inspect or sample each role separately rather than forcing one value to cover all of them.
