Add Volley to your app module, grant Internet access in the manifest, create a request queue, and enqueue a request with success and error callbacks. Android Studio is where you configure and build the app; Volley is the Android library that performs and coordinates the network work.
1. Add Volley to the app module
Open the project in Android Studio and edit the module-level Gradle file, normally app/build.gradle or app/build.gradle.kts. Add Volley to the dependencies block.
Groovy Gradle
dependencies {
implementation 'com.android.volley:volley:1.2.1'
}
Kotlin Gradle DSL
dependencies {
implementation("com.android.volley:volley:1.2.1")
}
The Volley release notes reviewed for this guide identify version 1.2.1, released in 2021. Check the current artifact metadata available to your project before publishing or starting a new app, because that release may not be the newest available in 2026. After editing the file, click Sync Now (or use File > Sync Project with Gradle Files) and wait for Gradle to finish.
2. Add the Internet permission
In app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml, place the permission directly under the <manifest> element, before <application>:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android.You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
<manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
<application
android:theme="@style/Theme.YourApp">
...
</application>
</manifest>
This is a normal install-time permission; you do not request it with a runtime permission dialog. Without it, the app cannot connect to the network.
3. Create a request queue
A RequestQueue schedules network operations, cache work, and response parsing. For a quick one-screen example, create one with Volley.newRequestQueue(context). For an app that makes requests throughout its lifetime, keep one queue in a singleton and pass the application context so an Activity is not retained accidentally.
Simple Java setup
RequestQueue queue = Volley.newRequestQueue(getApplicationContext());
Reusable Java singleton
public final class VolleySingleton {
private static volatile VolleySingleton instance;
private final RequestQueue requestQueue;
private VolleySingleton(Context context) {
requestQueue = Volley.newRequestQueue(context.getApplicationContext());
}
public static VolleySingleton getInstance(Context context) {
if (instance == null) {
synchronized (VolleySingleton.class) {
if (instance == null) {
instance = new VolleySingleton(context);
}
}
}
return instance;
}
public RequestQueue getRequestQueue() {
return requestQueue;
}
}
The standard queue created by Volley supplies a network transport and cache. A long-lived singleton avoids rebuilding those components whenever an Activity is recreated.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
4. Send a first request
The following Java example performs a GET request and displays the returned text. Replace the URL with an HTTPS endpoint that your app is allowed to call.

String url = "https://example.com/api/message";
StringRequest request = new StringRequest(
Request.Method.GET,
url,
response -> {
// Runs on the main thread after Volley receives the response.
textView.setText(response);
},
error -> {
// Runs on the main thread when the request fails.
textView.setText("Request failed: " + error.getMessage());
}
);
queue.add(request);
Volley performs the network operation away from the main thread, parses the response, and delivers the parsed result to the success or error listener on the main thread. Enqueuing with queue.add(request) is what starts the request.
The same flow in Kotlin
val queue = Volley.newRequestQueue(applicationContext)
val url = "https://example.com/api/message"
val request = StringRequest(
Request.Method.GET,
url,
{ response -> textView.text = response },
{ error -> textView.text = "Request failed: ${error.message}" }
)
queue.add(request)
Java and Kotlin use the same sequence: construct a request, provide callbacks, then add it to a queue.

5. Choose the request type that matches the response
| Class | Use it for | Result delivered to the success listener |
|---|---|---|
StringRequest |
Plain text, HTML, or an API response you will parse yourself | A raw String |
JsonObjectRequest |
A JSON object such as {"name":"Ada"} |
A JSONObject |
JsonArrayRequest |
A JSON array such as [{"id":1}] |
A JSONArray |
Use a built-in request class when its response type fits. JsonObjectRequest can also carry a JSON request body when the endpoint expects one. A custom request is appropriate when the server format or parsing requirements do not match these classes.
6. Cancel requests when a screen goes away
Assign a tag to requests owned by a screen, then cancel that tag when the screen stops or is destroyed:
request.setTag(this);
queue.add(request);
// In the screen's cleanup method:
queue.cancelAll(this);
Cancellation guarantees that the response handler will not be called. Do not design a later operation that depends on a canceled request’s callback to advance it.

7. Network constraints that affect your design
Prefer HTTPS
Android disables cleartext HTTP by default for apps targeting API 28 or higher. If an endpoint can only use HTTP, configure an explicit network-security exception for that host and understand the security risk; this restriction comes from Android, not from Volley itself.
Keep payloads reasonably small
Volley holds requests and responses in memory while parsing. It is therefore not suitable for large downloads or streaming, and it does not provide pause/resume controls or in-flight progress reporting for an individual request. Use a download-oriented or streaming mechanism for those workloads.
Do not block the main thread
Start requests through the queue rather than calling a blocking HTTP client from a UI callback. Update views only from Volley’s delivered callbacks or from your app’s own lifecycle-aware state layer.

Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.
8. Diagnose common failures
BasicNetwork.performRequest: Unexpected response code
This message normally means the request reached the server and the server returned an HTTP error status. Inspect the status code and response body, check server logs, and compare the URL, method, headers, authentication, and body with a client that succeeds.
Cleartext traffic errors
Change the endpoint to HTTPS when possible. If HTTP is unavoidable, add a narrowly scoped network-security configuration rather than enabling cleartext traffic for every host.
SSL protocol exceptions on older devices
Compare the Android version and TLS protocols enabled by the device with the protocols accepted by the server and the HTTP stack in use. A workaround suitable for one legacy device is not a universally safe default; upgrading the server or device support is preferable when possible.
Quick Recap
9. A practical checklist
- Volley is declared in the app module, not only in a project-level Gradle file.
- Gradle sync completes without a dependency-resolution error.
android.permission.INTERNETis present in the manifest.- The request is added to a live
RequestQueue. - The URL uses HTTPS and accepts the method and payload you send.
- The response type matches
StringRequest,JsonObjectRequest, orJsonArrayRequest. - Large or streaming transfers use a more suitable networking mechanism.
- Screen-scoped requests have tags if they must be canceled during lifecycle changes.
