The image host must let Excel access the file without a login, and Excel blocks redirected image URLs. If you want a one-off picture instead of a formula linked to a URL, insert the picture into the worksheet.
Insert an image URL with Excel’s IMAGE function
The IMAGE function places an image inside a cell from a source location. Use a direct link to an image file, not the address of a webpage that happens to show an image.
- Copy the direct HTTPS URL of an image that Excel can access. A link ending in an image filename such as
.jpgor.pngmay be a clue, but the important test is whether the link resolves to an accessible image file rather than a webpage. - In Excel, put the URL in a cell such as A2.
- Select the cell where you want the image to appear, such as B2, and enter
=IMAGE(A2). - Press Enter. To display more images, place additional image URLs in the rows below and fill the formula down alongside them.
You can also put the URL directly in the formula: =IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg"). Replace the example with the actual direct image URL.
Use a URL column for a list of images
A two-column worksheet is convenient when each row represents an item:

Check that you have permission to access every image link in the list. If a URL works only when you are signed in to a website, Excel may not be able to retrieve it.
Choose image sizing and add alternative text
The function’s syntax is =IMAGE(source, [alt_text], [sizing], [height], [width]). The source is required; the other arguments are optional. Microsoft’s IMAGE function guidance defines four sizing modes:

For example, to fit the image in the cell and provide alternative text, use =IMAGE(A2,"Blue ceramic mug",0). Write alt text that describes the image’s useful content for someone who cannot see it.
For custom sizing, provide both dimensions after sizing value 3, for example =IMAGE(A2,"Blue ceramic mug",3,120,160). The height is 120 pixels and the width is 160 pixels. Do not add height or width when using sizing values 0, 1, or 2; Excel can return #VALUE! for incompatible arguments.

Check Excel version, platform, and image format
Microsoft lists IMAGE for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Excel 2024, Excel 2024 for Mac, Excel for iPhone, and Excel for Android phones. Availability can depend on the Excel version and platform, so check Microsoft’s current IMAGE function support information if Excel does not recognize the function.
The formats Microsoft lists as supported are BMP, JPG/JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, ICO, and WEBP. WEBP is not supported by IMAGE in Excel for the web or Excel for Android. An unsupported format can produce #VALUE!. Animated GIF support is not the same as playing an animation in a cell; Microsoft’s Place in Cell documentation lists non-animated GIF among supported in-cell formats.
Why an image URL may not display
The error message and the link’s behavior help narrow down the cause. Check the URL itself before changing the formula.
The link is not a direct image URL
A page address from the browser’s address bar may point to a webpage, not to the image file. Excel needs a source it can retrieve as an image. Open the link in a browser and verify that it leads to the image itself. When copying from a page, use the image’s context menu and choose the option to copy the image link or address, if available.

IMAGE requires an HTTPS source URL. Replace an HTTP link with a valid HTTPS image link if the host provides one. Merely changing the text from http to https will not help if the server does not actually support HTTPS.
The image requires a login or redirects
Excel cannot render an image URL that requires authentication. Microsoft also says redirected source URLs are blocked for security reasons. A link that works in your browser because you are logged in, or one that forwards to another address, may therefore fail in the worksheet. Use a direct image URL that is publicly accessible to Excel and does not redirect.
The URL is too long
Microsoft documents a 255-character URL limit for IMAGE. If a copied link exceeds it, right-click the image in the browser and copy the image link rather than copying the page address. You can put the direct link in a worksheet cell and reference that cell, for example =IMAGE(F10); using a cell reference does not make an over-limit URL itself valid, so the URL still needs to meet Excel’s limit.
The formula returns an error

When an image fails, check the exact formula arguments as well as the URL. The IMAGE function can return #VALUE! if the source or alt text is not a string, the sizing number is outside 0–3, custom sizing lacks a valid height or width, or height and width are supplied with sizing 0, 1, or 2.

Insert a static picture instead of linking an image URL
If you need a one-off image that does not update from a URL or depend on a live remote link, use Excel’s picture insertion tools. The available route depends on platform and version. Microsoft documents options including insertion from your device, Stock Images, Bing Pictures, clipboard paste, and Place in Cell. For Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024, Place in Cell documentation also describes ribbon insertion, inserting multiple images, and converting between pictures placed in cells and pictures that float over cells.
Excel for the web
Excel for the web documents inserting a picture from your device, Stock Images, Bing Pictures, or the clipboard. Its guidance notes that Bing image results may not work if the host is not using HTTPS or the image URL is invalid.
Place in Cell or a picture over cells
Use Place in Cell when the picture should occupy a cell; use a picture over cells when it should behave more like a movable object layered on top of the worksheet. These are picture-insertion choices, not a replacement for a URL-driven IMAGE formula. Microsoft lists conversion between pictures placed in cells and pictures over cells for Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024.

- Use
IMAGEwhen the worksheet should display a remotely hosted image from a URL and can access that URL directly over HTTPS. - Use picture insertion when you want a static image in the workbook rather than a formula dependent on a remote source.
- Use a webpage screenshot workflow when what you need is an image of a webpage, not merely the image file embedded on that page.

Can I use IMAGE with a URL copied from a webpage?
Only if the copied address is a direct, accessible HTTPS image URL. A page URL, login-required link, or redirected source may not work.
Can IMAGE display a WebP file in every version of Excel?
No. Microsoft lists WEBP as unsupported for IMAGE in Excel for the web and Android.
Does an IMAGE formula embed the source file in the workbook?
It displays an image from a source location. For a static picture inserted into the worksheet instead, use Excel’s picture insertion tools.
