To draw an arrow on a worksheet, select Insert > Shapes, choose an arrow, then click and drag where you want it. To put an arrow character inside a cell instead, use Insert > Symbol or a formula with UNICHAR. The right method depends on whether you need a movable annotation or cell text.
Choose between a drawn arrow and an arrow character
| What you need | Use | How it behaves | Formatting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annotate the worksheet or point to an area | Arrow shape | A drawing object you can move and resize on the sheet | Shape and line formatting |
| Connect two objects or positions | Line or connector with an arrowhead | A line drawing placed between points | Line and arrowhead controls |
| Show an arrow as part of a cell’s text | Symbol or UNICHAR formula |
A static character in the cell, not a separate drawing object | Depends on the font and character |
Excel’s Shapes gallery supports adding shapes to spreadsheets, while Microsoft’s symbol instructions describe inserted symbols as static characters. See Microsoft’s Add shapes and Insert a symbol guidance.
Draw an arrow on the worksheet
- Open Insert > Shapes.
- Choose an arrow from the Shapes gallery.
- Click and drag on the worksheet to set the arrow’s position and length.
Use this approach for a visual callout that should sit over the worksheet rather than become part of a cell’s contents. Microsoft’s Shapes instructions describe choosing a shape and click-dragging to draw it. Ribbon details can vary by Excel platform and version.
Add or change an arrowhead on a line
For an arrow that points along a line—or a connector between objects—start with Insert > Shapes and choose a line or connector. Drag from the starting point to the endpoint. To set its arrowhead after drawing, select the line and open Shape Format > Shape Outline > Arrows. Choose an arrow style; More Arrows provides additional customization. Microsoft documents these steps in Draw or delete a line or connector.

Insert an arrow character in a cell
Use the Symbol menu
- Select the cell where the character should appear.
- Choose Insert > Symbol.
- Select an arrow from the available list, or choose More Symbols to browse further.
- If needed, try a font with a broader symbol set, such as Segoe UI Symbol.
Available symbols and their appearance depend on the selected font. The inserted character is cell text, not a movable arrow shape. Microsoft’s symbol guidance explains the menu and font-dependent character sets.
Generate a character with UNICHAR
If you already know the Unicode number for the arrow character you want, enter =UNICHAR(number) in a cell, replacing number with that value. The function returns the Unicode character associated with the number. Microsoft documents the function for Excel 2016 and later, including Mac editions, in its UNICHAR function reference. That reference does not prescribe a particular arrow code point, and rendering can depend on the font, so confirm the character you need rather than assuming one number works for every arrow.

Can a keyboard shortcut insert an arrow directly?
Microsoft lists Alt+N as the Windows access key for opening Excel’s Insert tab, not as a universal shortcut that inserts an arrow by itself. For a dependable route, use the ribbon’s Insert > Shapes or Insert > Symbol commands. See Microsoft’s Excel keyboard shortcuts reference.
