To insert a saved screenshot into Google Docs on a computer, open the document and choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer. Select the screenshot file and complete the open dialog. If the image is in Google Drive or Google Photos, choose that source instead. After insertion, select the image to resize it or choose a layout such as In line or Wrap text.

Insert a saved screenshot on a computer

This is the dependable method when your screenshot is stored as a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, or another image file that Google Docs accepts.

  1. Open Google Docs and open the document.
  2. Click where the screenshot should appear.
  3. Choose Insert > Image from the menu bar.
  4. Select Upload from computer.
  5. Browse to the screenshot, select it, and choose Open (or the equivalent confirmation button in your operating system).

Docs places the image at the cursor position. A locally saved screenshot should use Upload from computer; choosing a different source does not change the document, but it changes where Docs looks for the image.

Choose the right image source

Where the screenshot is Menu choice What to do
Your computer Upload from computer Select the image file in the file picker.
Google Drive or Google Photos Drive & Photos Find and select the stored screenshot.
A camera or connected source The relevant camera option Follow the source dialog to capture or select an image.
A publicly reachable image address By URL Paste the image URL and insert the result.

Google also documents dragging an image from your computer or a website directly into the document. The exact behavior can vary by operating system, browser, image type, and security settings, so uploading the saved file is the fallback when drag-and-drop does not work.

Copy and paste a screenshot

If the screenshot is already on your clipboard, click in the document and paste it. Google’s computer clipboard guidance lists Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on Windows and Linux, and Command+C and Command+V on macOS. You can copy the image from an image editor, file browser preview, or another application, then paste it into Docs.

Browser menu access to the system clipboard can be restricted. If a browser’s Edit menu does not offer paste, use the keyboard shortcut or save the screenshot as a file and follow Insert > Image > Upload from computer. The official clipboard instructions are at Google’s copy-and-paste help.

Insert a screenshot in the Google Docs Android app

On Android, use the Docs app rather than the desktop menu.

  1. Open the document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Insert.
  3. Tap Image.
  4. Choose where to get the image.
  5. Tap the screenshot or photo you want to add.

These steps insert an existing image. The Android help page does not define the screenshot button sequence for every phone model, Android version, or manufacturer; capture the screenshot with your phone’s own controls first, then select it in Docs. See Google’s Android image instructions for the documented insertion flow.

Resize, rotate, and position the screenshot

Click or tap the inserted image to show its controls. Drag a corner handle to change its size while preserving its proportions. Drag a side handle only when you intentionally want to change the aspect ratio. For precise changes, open the image’s options and use the available size and rotation controls.

Choose a text layout

On a computer in a Pages-format document, Google Docs offers these layout choices:

  • In line: treats the screenshot like a large character in the paragraph. Text remains above and below it.
  • Wrap text: lets paragraphs flow around the image.
  • Break text: keeps text in bands above and below the image.
  • Behind text: places the image under the text.
  • In front of text: places the image over the text.

Use In line for procedures, evidence, and screenshots that should stay with the surrounding paragraph. Use Wrap text for a narrower image beside explanatory text. Behind text and In front of text can obscure words, so check the page at normal zoom before sharing or printing.

Make the image move with text or stay fixed

In Pages format, an image using Wrap text or Break text can be configured to move with the text or remain fixed on the page. Choose the position controls shown after selecting the image, then select the behavior that matches your document: move it when paragraphs change, or keep it anchored to a page location.

Google states that text wrapping and position controls are unavailable in pageless documents. If those controls are missing, switch the document to Pages format through the document’s page-format settings, then select the image again. Pageless documents are still suitable for an inline screenshot; they simply do not expose those page-positioning controls.

Adjust appearance

Image options can include recoloring plus adjustments for transparency, brightness, and contrast. These are useful when a screenshot is legible but visually dominates the page, or when a dark screenshot needs a small contrast correction. Keep text-heavy screenshots at a readable scale; making an image transparent or heavily recolored can reduce accessibility and obscure interface details.

Keep screenshots readable in a document

  • Crop before inserting when possible: remove unrelated browser tabs, notifications, and empty margins in an image editor or your operating system’s markup tool.
  • Use a useful width: a full-width screenshot is easier to read than a tiny thumbnail, but it may force page breaks.
  • Preserve context: keep the address bar or relevant control visible when the screenshot is evidence for a technical procedure.
  • Add a caption: place a short line below the image explaining what the reader should notice.
  • Check page breaks: a large inline image can push a heading or paragraph to the next page.
  • Review sharing permissions: an image inserted from Drive or Photos may have different access considerations than an uploaded copy.

When insertion fails: symptoms and fixes

The image does not appear after choosing it

Wait for the upload to finish, confirm that the browser tab is online, and try the file-upload route again. If the image is stored in Drive or Photos, use Insert > Image > Drive & Photos instead of a stale local copy. Saving the screenshot locally and uploading it also removes uncertainty about a cloud file’s current location.

Paste does nothing

Clipboard permissions differ among browsers and operating systems. Use the documented keyboard shortcut, then reload the document if necessary. If paste remains unavailable, save the clipboard image as a file and use Upload from computer.

Wrap text or position buttons are missing

Confirm that the document is in Pages format. Google does not provide text wrapping or position controls in pageless documents. After changing the format, select the image again; the layout controls should be available when that format supports them.

The screenshot is too large or blurry

Resize from a corner rather than stretching one side. If text becomes unreadable, insert the original screenshot again at a larger size or capture only the relevant region. Enlarging a low-resolution image cannot recreate detail that was not captured.

The screenshot covers text

Change the layout to In line, Wrap text, or Break text. If you intentionally selected In front of text, move the image or choose a different position. For a watermark-like effect, Behind text plus a transparency adjustment may work, but verify contrast.

Mobile controls differ from the instructions

The Android sequence applies to the Google Docs app. Menus can move as the app changes, and iPhone or iPad use a separate interface. If you cannot find Insert, update the app and confirm that you are editing the document rather than viewing it.

If you need a screenshot of a web page rather than an image already on your device, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Use the API endpoint documented at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot that you can upload to Docs:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python equivalent:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js equivalent:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Features include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, selector hiding, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. After downloading the result, insert it with Insert > Image > Upload from computer. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the 1,000 monthly screenshots with no card.

FAQ

Can I insert a screenshot directly from a website?

Yes. Drag an image from a website into the document, copy and paste it, or use Insert > Image > By URL when you have a usable image address. Uploading a saved copy is more predictable when the page changes.

Why is my image locked to the paragraph?

That is the In line layout. Select the image and choose another layout in a Pages-format document if you need text wrapping or page positioning.

Will changing to pageless delete my screenshot?

The image remains in the document, but pageless format does not provide text-wrapping and position controls. Switch back to Pages format when you need those controls.
