Leave room for speed fluctuations and other people or devices using the network. If frames still drop, troubleshoot the connection path—Wi-Fi, router, software, ISP, or the route to the streaming platform—instead of treating one speed-test result as a guarantee.
What “increase upload speed” means for a live stream
Upload speed is how quickly your connection sends data out; download speed measures incoming data. A fast download result does not mean the connection can send a live stream at the same rate. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If you send a primary and backup stream, count both bitrates.
A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained performance or of a good route to the platform’s ingest server. OBS Project describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024). A stream can therefore drop frames even when a speed test looks adequate.
Measure the connection under realistic conditions
- Test upload speed. Run a speed test while the connection is quiet and record the upload result, time, and whether other users or devices were active. Do not use the download figure to set a streaming bitrate.
- Test at your normal streaming time. Repeat the test when you usually go live. Shared networks and competing uploads can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream.
- Run a private or unlisted test stream. Use the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative motion as the intended broadcast. Check OBS network statistics and the platform’s stream-health indicators while the test runs. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
- Compare sustained results with total bitrate. Use the lower, repeatable upload performance—not the best peak—as your working capacity. Include any backup stream and leave a margin for variation and other network traffic.
Choose a bitrate that fits the stable upload
Lowering the encoder bitrate is usually the quickest configuration change to try. Platform guidance differs, so use the destination’s recommendations rather than treating any single percentage as a universal rule:

- OBS Project: suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. This is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee (OBS, September 30, 2024).
- YouTube: recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
- Twitch: gives the general rule that upload speed should equal stream bitrate plus 30%. Its example says a 6 Mbps stream should have at least 8 Mbps upload (Twitch Help; publication year not stated on the retrieved FAQ).
These are different platform/operator guidelines, not competing guarantees. Leave practical room for other traffic and fluctuations; do not set bitrate equal to a best-case speed-test peak.
YouTube H.264 bitrate reference
YouTube’s published recommendations below are for H.264. They are encoder settings, not universal minimum ISP plan speeds. YouTube’s AV1/H.265 recommendations differ, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; publication date not shown).

If the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, reduce bitrate first. If the resulting picture is too soft, try a lower resolution or frame rate that better fits the stable uplink and the platform’s current guidance. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; keyframe frequency does not increase raw upload capacity (YouTube Help).
Improve the network path before buying faster service
Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi is the weak link
Connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming and notes that a faulty cable can also be a cause of trouble (OBS Project). Ethernet can improve reliability when Wi-Fi is the problem, but it cannot raise the upload capacity provided by your ISP. If the wired connection is already stable and limited by the plan or upstream network, a cable will not bypass that limit.

If you must use Wi-Fi, test nearer to the router and reduce competing wireless use as a diagnostic. The cited official guidance supports wired connectivity but does not quantify a speed gain from moving closer or changing Wi-Fi equipment.
Stop competing uploads
Pause cloud backups, file uploads, and other tasks that send data while you stream. Ask other people sharing the connection to avoid heavy uploads during the broadcast. Twitch notes that other devices using upload bandwidth affect streaming; YouTube notes that a shared network can limit the bandwidth available to an individual stream (Twitch Help; YouTube Help).

Isolate a service or route problem
If bitrate, wired connectivity, and competing traffic do not explain the drops, test a different ingest server where the platform offers that option. A short test on another service can help identify a service- or route-specific issue, but changing services is a diagnostic, not a fix for the original route. OBS also recommends checking VPN, security, or bundled network-optimization software; updating network drivers; restarting the modem and router; and contacting the ISP if the problem persists (OBS Project).

OBS dynamic bitrate can lower bitrate when congestion occurs, which may reduce dropped frames. The trade-off is lower video quality while it adjusts, and it does not repair an unstable connection or increase available upload capacity. Treat it as a fallback for variable congestion, not a substitute for finding the cause (OBS Project).

When a faster internet plan is the right fix
Consider a plan with more upload capacity when repeated tests during your usual streaming hours show that the wired connection’s sustained upload cannot accommodate your chosen total bitrate with headroom, after competing uploads have been paused. First verify whether the limit is the ISP plan rather than Wi-Fi, local equipment, or a route-specific problem. A new router, cable, or software tool cannot overcome an upstream service-capacity limit.
Some published thresholds are service-specific. Cloudflare Stream’s troubleshooting guide, updated July 30, 2026, says 20 Mbps is the minimum upload speed for its service and suggests lowering streams above 15 Mbps to 8 Mbps or 70% of internet speed, whichever is lower (Cloudflare Stream troubleshooting). Those figures apply to Cloudflare Stream’s guidance; they are not universal requirements for YouTube or Twitch.
