A higher value generally preserves more detail and creates larger files; a lower value generally creates smaller files with more visible compression. The change applies when WordPress processes images after the filter is installed—it does not automatically reprocess existing uploads.
Change JPEG quality with the jpeg_quality filter
Add this snippet to a site-specific plugin or your child theme’s functions.php file:
add_filter( 'jpeg_quality', function ( $quality ) {
return 82;
} );Replace 82 with the quality value you want. WordPress documents the legacy filter on a 0–100 scale, while the image editor’s set_quality() method documents 1–100; its implementation treats zero as one for compatibility. Use a value within 1–100 rather than relying on values outside the editor’s documented range. See the WordPress jpeg_quality hook reference and image editor quality method.
The image editor API’s documented default is 90. That is a software default, not a recommendation that every site should use 90. WordPress does not prescribe a universally best setting: compare the resulting file size and appearance using representative images from your site.

Where the setting applies—and where it does not
jpeg_quality is a JPEG-specific default-quality filter for image-editor operations documented in the image_resize and edit_image contexts. It applies when WordPress resolves the editor’s default quality. If code calls the editor with an explicit quality value, that value takes precedence over the filter. See the hook reference and editor method documentation.
Changing the filter does not rewrite files that WordPress has already generated. Existing image sizes must be deliberately reprocessed or regenerated to use the new setting. Before bulk lossy reprocessing, preserve the original files or verify that you have a restorable backup.

The outcome can also depend on the image-editor backend, output format, registered image sizes, explicit quality arguments and other plugins. Do not assume every image added to WordPress follows one identical compression path.
Choose the right WordPress quality hook

For a policy that changes with dimensions or format, use wp_editor_set_quality rather than trying to make a single JPEG value cover every case. The hook’s arguments let your code decide based on the MIME type and size.

Test a quality value before applying it broadly
- Add the filter to a site-specific plugin or child theme.
- Generate a test image or thumbnail through the image-editor workflow you want to affect.
- Compare the output with the previous version at the size visitors will see. Check for artifacts in fine detail, text, edges and gradients, not just the file size.
- Adjust the value and repeat until the visual result and file size suit your site.
- Only then decide whether existing generated sizes should be regenerated; keep originals or confirm backups before bulk lossy changes.
Quality numbers are not percentages of visual fidelity or guaranteed file-size reductions. Different images and encoders can yield different results, so a value that works well for one kind of image may not suit another.
WordPress 7.1 client-side processing
WordPress 7.1 client-side media processing is documented to honor the same PHP quality filters. It resolves quality for registered image sizes and uses that value for browser-based resize or transcode operations. If the server does not provide a quality field, the documented client-side fallback is 0.82. See the Client-Side Media Processing handbook and the WordPress 7.1 feature announcement.

When to use an image optimization plugin instead
A PHP filter is a good fit when you want developer-controlled defaults for image-editor output. An optimization plugin may be more appropriate if you need a user interface, bulk processing for existing Media Library files or optimization modes beyond changing WordPress’s default editor quality.

Before choosing a plugin, check whether it processes existing Media Library files, whether processing is local or cloud-based, what formats it supports, how backup and restoration work, and whether it is compatible with your hosting and other image plugins.
