These steps can help, but a speed-test result alone cannot guarantee smooth play: Xbox says streaming performance also varies with your location, device, connection, and other factors.
1. Improve the connection between your device and router
Use Ethernet when practical
Xbox recommends a wired Ethernet connection where possible. If you are playing on a PC or another device with an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and see whether play becomes more stable. Many phones and tablets do not have a built-in Ethernet port, so use Wi-Fi on those devices unless you have a compatible wired adapter.
Choose 5 GHz Wi-Fi and reduce distance
If you are playing wirelessly, Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. On a dual-band router, check the device’s Wi-Fi settings to confirm it is connected to the 5 GHz network; having a router that supports 5 GHz does not mean every device is using that band. Move closer to the router when practical, since distance can weaken the local wireless connection. Microsoft also lists trying Ethernet and moving nearer to the router among its general cloud-gaming troubleshooting suggestions (Microsoft Edge: How to Speed Up Cloud Gaming).
2. Check your connection speed against Xbox’s recommendations
Xbox’s current Cloud Gaming page gives different recommended connection speeds by device class. Xbox Wire’s December 2025 getting-started guide separately recommends at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming in general. These are recommendations, not guarantees of low input delay, a particular image quality, or uninterrupted play.

If you are below the relevant figure, first check that the device is on the intended Wi-Fi band or connect by Ethernet if supported. If you meet it but still encounter freezes or delayed inputs, speed is not the only factor; the quality of the connection and the route to the service can matter as well.
3. Reduce local competition and browser load
When playing in a browser, close tabs you do not need, especially if other pages are using substantial bandwidth or device resources. Microsoft includes closing unnecessary background tabs as a general cloud-gaming troubleshooting step (Microsoft Edge: How to Speed Up Cloud Gaming). Treat this as a check, not a guaranteed fix: it may help when local activity is contributing to a problem, but it will not resolve every network or service issue.

4. Confirm that your browser and device are supported
Xbox lists browsers including Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari for cloud gaming. Compatibility and availability can vary by device and change over time, so check the current supported-device information on the Xbox Cloud Gaming page for your setup rather than assuming every browser or device can play.
5. Don’t confuse sharper visuals with lower lag
Microsoft Edge’s Clarity Boost is a visual-quality feature that uses client-side scaling to make the picture look sharper. It may be worth trying if the image looks soft on a supported Edge setup, but Microsoft does not present it as a network-latency setting or a fix for freezes and delayed input. 6. Retest and identify what remains wrong
After changing one thing at a time—connection type or Wi-Fi band, distance from the router, then unnecessary tabs—start another session and check whether the specific symptom improves. A soft image points to visual quality; delayed inputs or freezes call for checking the connection and device. If play remains poor despite meeting the applicable speed recommendation, Xbox notes that location, device, connection, and other factors can affect streaming (Xbox Cloud Gaming). A faster speed-test number by itself does not establish that the path to the service is stable or that a local setting is the cause.
