Improve screen-reader access by giving each page meaningful structure, useful image alternatives, properly labeled forms, and complete keyboard operation. Then review real pages and tasks with assistive technologies and users where the experience is important or complex. A browser-based first check can reveal basic problems, but passing it is not proof of full accessibility or WCAG conformance.

Start with page structure and meaning

Screen readers rely on the semantics conveyed by a page, not just its visual layout. A page that looks organized to a sighted visitor can still be difficult to navigate if its content is not represented with meaningful HTML structure. Begin by making the page understandable as a sequence of regions, headings, and content elements.

Use real headings and regions

  • Use HTML elements that match the purpose of the content they contain. Make page regions identifiable so a user can move through the page and find its main content.
  • Give regions a distinguishing label when a page has multiple regions of the same kind and a label is needed to tell them apart.
  • Use actual heading elements for headings, nested according to the relationships and importance of the sections they introduce. Do not substitute large or bold text for a semantic heading.
  • Make headings specific enough to identify the section. A useful heading gives someone navigating by headings a meaningful destination, even when they encounter it outside the surrounding visual context.

W3C/WAI’s WCAG 2.1 Understanding Success Criterion 2.4.6 states: “Headings and labels describe topic or purpose.” Treat this as a practical writing test: if a heading or label were read on its own, would it tell a person what follows or what a control is for?

Make titles and labels informative

Give each page a descriptive title, and choose headings and labels that name their subject or purpose rather than relying on vague wording. This improves orientation when people move directly to a page, section, or control instead of reading everything from the beginning.

Write image alternatives for what the image does

Decide an image’s role before writing its alternative text. The right alternative communicates information or function that a person using a screen reader would otherwise miss. A visual description is not automatically useful: it should explain the contribution the image makes to the page.

Informative images

For an informative image, provide alternative text that conveys the information the image contributes. Consider what the reader needs to learn from the image in that context. Avoid a generic description that does not convey its message or a long inventory of visual details that do not matter to the content.

Images that act as controls

For a functional image, name the action or purpose of the control. W3C/WAI gives “search” rather than “magnifying lens” as an example for a search button: the action is more useful than a description of the icon’s appearance. Apply the same principle to other image-based controls by naming what they do.

Decorative images

If an image is purely decorative and adds no information or function, use an empty alternative text value, alt="", or place it in CSS when appropriate. Do not give decorative flourishes descriptive text simply because they are visible; unnecessary announcements create noise for screen-reader users.

Make forms identifiable and recoverable

A person should be able to identify each form control, understand any special requirements, and recover from an error. Labels, instructions, and feedback are part of the form’s meaning—not optional decoration around its fields.

Associate a visible label with every control

Use a visible label associated with its form control. For example, pair <label for="username">Username</label> with a control whose id is username. Check that the label-control association is correct for every field, not just the first one in a form. A screen-reader user should be able to identify what information a control expects.

Explain requirements and unusual input

Provide instructions when a field is required or has an unusual input requirement. Keep instructions close enough to the relevant control that the relationship is clear. Do not rely on a visual cue alone if the person needs that information to complete the field.

Give specific error and success feedback

When an entry is rejected, explain which field needs attention and what the person can do to correct it. A message such as “There is an error” does not give enough direction; the feedback should identify the problem. Communicate successful completion too, so users know when the task is finished rather than receiving feedback only when something goes wrong.

Check keyboard operation, focus, and interaction order

Every action available with a mouse should also be available using a keyboard. Try the page without a mouse: move through its interactive controls, operate each action, and check whether you can complete the same task. Make sure focus does not become trapped in an interaction.

  • Order: Does focus move through the interaction in an order that makes sense for the task?

Keyboard review is a useful first check, not a substitute for screen-reader evaluation. A page can be operable with a keyboard while still having unclear names, structure, or feedback for someone using a screen reader.

Run a practical first-pass review

W3C/WAI Easy Checks is an introductory way to identify whether a page addresses accessibility in basic ways. W3C/WAI says most of its checks can be made in a browser without special tools; an extension may make some checks easier. Review a representative page and work through its actual content and interactions:

  1. Page title: Is the title informative about the page?
  2. Images: Do informative images have alternatives that convey their information, and do functional images name their actions? Are decorative images skipped?
  3. Headings: Are meaningful headings present and organized according to the sections they introduce?
  4. Keyboard: Can you reach and operate all interactions by keyboard, see focus, and avoid focus traps?
  5. Forms: Are controls labeled and necessary instructions provided? Are both errors and successful completion communicated?
  6. Multimedia and structure: Have you considered alternatives for multimedia and the basic structure of the page?

Do not treat a clean first-pass checklist as proof that every requirement is met. Easy Checks is expressly a starting review; it gives an indication of whether basic accessibility has been addressed, not a comprehensive evaluation or certification. It also does not establish that a site conforms to a particular WCAG version or to legal requirements in a particular jurisdiction.

Go beyond a checklist for important or complex tasks

For a consequential or complex experience, evaluate more than a single page’s visible appearance. Include the tasks people need to complete, the code and semantics behind the interface, and relevant browser and assistive-technology combinations. Involve people who use assistive technologies early and throughout the work; W3C/WAI notes that this improves web projects.

There is no universally sufficient screen-reader-and-browser test matrix established by the introductory W3C/WAI material. Choose the scope based on the pages and tasks at stake, the assistive technologies and browsers you need to consider, and whether representative users participate. Record which pages, workflows, and combinations you actually reviewed so that the boundary of the evaluation is clear. If you need to make a conformance or legal claim, verify the applicable WCAG version and jurisdiction-specific requirements separately.

Use screenshots as visual evidence, not screen-reader tests

A screenshot can help a team inspect a page’s visual state, but it cannot establish whether headings are semantic, images have useful alternatives, form controls are labeled, or keyboard and screen-reader interactions work. Pair visual review with semantic and interaction checks rather than treating a picture of the page as an accessibility result.

Or skip the browser setup

For a quick visual capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. The following cURL request saves a WebP image of the target URL; replace the URL and key with your own values. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses say which page verdict and billing status applied. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These captures can support visual inspection, but do not replace accessibility testing with semantic checks, keyboards, assistive technologies, and users.

Troubleshoot common first-pass failures

  • A page looks structured but heading navigation is unclear: Check whether the visible headings are real heading elements and nested according to the sections they represent, rather than styled text alone.
  • An icon is announced by appearance rather than purpose: If the image performs an action, change its alternative to name the action, such as “search” for a search button.
  • A form field is hard to identify: Confirm it has a visible associated label and that the label’s for value matches the control’s id.
  • A user cannot tell how to fix an error: Replace vague feedback with a specific explanation of the field or issue and the correction needed; also provide confirmation on successful completion.
  • You cannot see where keyboard focus is, or focus cannot leave an interaction: Make focus visible and ensure keyboard use does not become trapped. Review the interaction order as part of the same check.
  • A checklist passes but a workflow still seems inaccessible: Expand the review to the complete task, underlying semantics, relevant assistive technologies and browsers, and input from users. A first-pass review is not comprehensive conformance evidence.

Keep improvements in the content workflow

Accessibility is easier to maintain when authors, designers, and developers check meaning as they create and change pages. Before a page or feature is considered ready, review its title and structure, decide the role of each image, verify form labels and feedback, and operate its interactions by keyboard. Revisit representative pages after meaningful changes, and involve users throughout work on experiences where getting the interaction right matters most.
