You can often improve a compact stereo without replacing it. Start by adjusting speaker placement and your listening position, then compare small changes using familiar music at the same volume. The best arrangement depends on your room and speaker design, so treat general measurements as starting points—not universal rules.
Start with the listening seat and speaker layout
Choose the seat where you listen most often. Check that furniture or other objects do not block the path between you and either speaker. If the speakers are separate, place them symmetrically around the seat where the room allows, with roughly equal distances from each speaker to you. This stereo-triangle arrangement is a useful baseline, not a requirement for every room.
Teufel recommends an equilateral-triangle starting point in its general stereo-speaker guidance. Its suggested spacing and angles are not specific to every compact system, so use the geometry to get started and then listen. Teufel’s speaker-positioning guidance
How far apart should the speakers be?
There is no single spacing that works for every compact stereo. Teufel gives approximately 1.2 m as a general minimum spacing for compact speakers, but room size, listening distance, and the speakers themselves affect the result. If they are too close together, stereo separation may feel limited; if they are too far apart for your listening distance, the image may become less coherent. Adjust gradually and judge from your usual seat.

Adjust the angle for focus or a wider listening area
Aim both speakers toward the main seat as a starting point, then compare that angle with a straighter, less direct aim. Teufel suggests about 15° of toe-in as a general starting point, not a specification for all systems. More toe-in may help vocals and instruments sound centered from the main seat, but it can make the sound less consistent for people sitting elsewhere.
Use a familiar recording with a clear central vocal. Listen for a stable image between the speakers, then check whether it still sounds balanced from another seat if that matters in your room.

Set speaker height and support safely
When the speaker design and your setup allow it, bring the tweeters—the small drivers that reproduce higher frequencies—close to seated ear height. Philips recommends placing speakers around seated ear height for the systems covered by its advice and cautions against placing them directly on the floor unless a stand is used. Experiment with wall clearance and seat position
Room surfaces and speaker locations change what you hear. Philips advises leaving some clearance from walls for the systems addressed in its guidance. Klipsch notes that rear-ported speakers can be more sensitive to wall placement. Rather than treating one distance as mandatory, move the speakers a little at a time and listen for bass that is less boomy without losing stereo focus.
The seat matters too: a position that makes bass stronger may not produce the clearest stereo image. If low notes sound uneven, try shifting the seat or speakers modestly and compare. Philips states that room settings affect what listeners hear from its audio systems; the same practical point is why placement should be tuned in the room, rather than chosen from a measurement alone.

Make changes one at a time
- Note your normal setup. Mark the speaker and seat positions or take a photo so you can return to them.
- Make one small change. Adjust only spacing, angle, height, wall clearance, or seat position at a time.
- Replay familiar material. Use the same recording and keep playback volume consistent so the comparison is meaningful.
- Listen for specific results. Check whether vocals are centered, the stereo image holds together, and bass sounds balanced rather than boomy.
- Keep or reverse the change. Klipsch describes placement as trial and error and recommends small adjustments. If a move helps one quality but worsens another, decide which matters more for your room and listening habits. Klipsch speaker-arrangement guidance
Address an echoey room after placement
Bare walls and uncarpeted floors can contribute to echo, according to Klipsch. First try speaker and seat adjustments. If the room still sounds reflective, soft furnishings such as rugs or curtains, or suitable absorptive treatment, may help. Their effect depends on the room, so add them in response to a sound problem you can hear rather than assuming that a particular product will improve every setup.
What to check if the sound is still poor
General placement advice cannot diagnose a specific compact stereo. Check the manual for your exact model and confirm that the speakers are connected and positioned as the manufacturer specifies. The right next step depends on the symptom: persistent distortion, intermittent sound, or an imbalance between channels may need a different check than boomy bass or a weak stereo image. Without the model, room, speaker design, and symptom, there is no sound basis for assuming that you need replacement components.
