To improve StringBuilder performance in C#, use it for repeated or unpredictable text assembly—especially appends inside loops—estimate a realistic initial capacity when possible, and avoid expensive access patterns such as repeatedly indexing every character in a large multi-chunk builder. For a few known values, ordinary concatenation or interpolation may be simpler and just as appropriate. The right choice depends on the workload, so profile and benchmark representative inputs on the runtime you deploy.

Choose the construction method that fits the work

C# strings are immutable: changing a string creates a new string rather than editing the existing one. When code repeatedly adds pieces in a loop, intermediate strings can mean extra allocations and copying. A mutable StringBuilder is often a better fit when the number of pieces is large or not known until runtime.

Use concatenation or interpolation for a few known values

For a short, fixed expression—such as combining a name, separator, and label—+ or interpolation is often clearer. The compiler may combine a fixed expression into a single operation, so replacing every concatenation with a builder is not a reliable optimization rule.

Use StringBuilder for incremental assembly

A builder is particularly useful when text is accumulated across iterations, or when the collection of pieces is determined at runtime. Judge the operation itself rather than counting plus signs in source code: string size, allocation volume, runtime, system, and operation all affect performance. Microsoft’s .NET 10 StringBuilder API reference says performance depends on those factors and recommends testing whether a builder makes a significant difference.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set a realistic initial capacity

Length is the number of characters currently stored; Capacity is the available character storage. If appends exceed capacity, the builder must allocate more storage and grow. When you can estimate the output size, initializing capacity near that estimate can reduce growth reallocations.

Capacity is a tradeoff, not a target to maximize: a very large initial value reserves memory whether or not the builder reaches it. Choose a plausible estimate from the output your code usually produces, then verify it with representative inputs. Microsoft’s older example uses a workload-specific estimate of sLen * Loops * 1.1; that is an illustration, not a universal sizing formula. Its displayed timing should not be treated as an expected speedup.

Avoid full indexed scans on a large builder

Appending is the typical builder workload, but a builder may store content in multiple chunks as it grows. Repeatedly reading builder[i] across a large, multi-chunk instance can require traversing chunk structure for each access. Microsoft documents that a full traversal in this pattern can become O(n²); accessing one or a few characters has negligible impact.

If you need to inspect every character, convert once to a string and index that result, or copy the content into a suitably pre-sized builder before traversing. The right workaround depends on whether the consumer needs the mutable builder or an immutable string.

Keep assembly in the builder, then convert once

ToString() creates the string required by consumers whose input type is string, so that final conversion remains part of the cost. Avoid calling ToString() repeatedly while there is still more content to append: doing so materializes intermediate strings and can undo some of the benefit of incremental assembly. Keep writing to the builder until assembly is complete, then convert when the consumer needs the result.

Consider the destination and the builder’s lifetime

Write directly when the output can be streamed

If the destination accepts streamed output, writing directly to it can avoid holding the entire result in memory as an intermediate string. This is worth considering for large output, but only when the destination and surrounding code support incremental writes.

Reuse only when profiling supports it

If a builder is repeatedly created in a hot path and profiling shows those allocations matter, reuse may reduce allocation and garbage-collection pressure. Reuse is safe only when ownership and concurrency are handled correctly: do not let independent operations mutate the same builder at the same time, and ensure its prior content is cleared before the next use.

Find and measure the actual hot path

There is no universal speedup figure for switching to StringBuilder. Compare the approaches using the input sizes, operation mix, and .NET runtime that matter to your application, measuring both elapsed time and allocations. Include realistic output lengths and iteration counts; a tiny demonstration cannot establish how a different workload will behave.

When performance profiling identifies frequent concatenation, use the profiler’s call tree and source highlighting to locate the responsible code before changing it. Visual Studio documents this investigation workflow in its performance insights for string concatenation. Then benchmark the proposed change against the original on the target runtime.

Quick decision guide

Workload Starting choice What to check
A few fixed values in one expression + or interpolation Prefer readability; do not assume a builder is faster.
Many pieces or a runtime-determined collection StringBuilder Estimate output size and avoid repeated intermediate conversions.
Large output sent to a stream-capable destination Direct streaming, where supported Whether the whole result truly needs to exist as a string.
Repeated character-by-character inspection of a large builder Convert once or change the access pattern Repeated indexed access can make a full scan O(n²) for a large chunky builder.

For broader guidance on the tradeoff between fixed values, collections, and loop-based construction, see Microsoft’s C# string guidance. The practical rule is to select the representation that matches how the text is produced and consumed, then measure the real hot path rather than optimizing by habit.
