Improve storage performance by measuring the server under realistic peak load, finding whether storage is actually the bottleneck, and matching the storage layout to its read-and-write pattern. Large media files read mostly in sequence can work well on capacity HDDs; workloads with frequent small or random reads may benefit from SSD or NVMe. Neither a faster drive nor RAID alone guarantees uninterrupted playback: the controller, host, cache, filesystem, network, and recovery plan all matter.

What storage performance means for a streaming server

Streaming involves continuous transmission of media segments from a server to a client while the client consumes them, as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 9317 (2022), Section 1.1. The same RFC says its considerations generally apply to both live media and previously recorded media streamed from storage. A server’s 24/7 schedule does not call for a special class of drive; it calls for storage that can sustain the actual workload and a plan for failures and recovery.

Evaluate four related measures: latency (how long an I/O takes), throughput (how much data moves per second), IOPS (how many operations complete per second), and concurrent streams. A system can have ample sequential throughput but still struggle with latency-heavy random access, or have fast disks while the network is saturated. The relevant limit may be a drive, controller or bus, filesystem, host resources, cache, or network path.

Measure before changing hardware

Build a realistic baseline

Test during a peak-like workload using representative media sizes, read/write mix, and concurrency. Run long enough to distinguish sustained performance from a short burst. Record:

  • Number of concurrent viewers and delivered bitrate per stream.
  • Storage read and write throughput, latency, and IOPS.
  • CPU and memory use, including whether reads are being served from memory cache.
  • Network utilization on the server and delivery path.
  • Stream start delays, stalls, and any periods when storage or network utilization reaches its limit.

Do not treat one brief benchmark result as proof of 24/7 capacity. Cloud filesystem documentation, for example, distinguishes baseline from burst performance; a local system should likewise be evaluated for sustained behavior.

Estimate the storage demand

Add the bitrates of simultaneous streams that must be read from the origin rather than a cache. Convert bits to bytes when comparing with storage throughput, and allow for protocol or container overhead, ingest and transcode writes, cache misses, maintenance, and rebuild activity. Compare this estimate with measured sustainable capacity, not a drive’s advertised burst figure. There is no universal headroom percentage for an unspecified server; choose a margin based on peak variation and the service’s tolerance for stalls.

Find the constrained part of the path

If storage latency climbs or throughput plateaus while CPU and network still have headroom, inspect the drives, controller, queueing, filesystem, and cache behavior. If storage is mostly idle while the network is saturated, replacing drives is unlikely to improve delivery. AWS’s Volume Gateway guidance lists CPU, RAM, cache and upload-disk throughput, and both network legs as possible bottlenecks for that service; it is a useful illustration of end-to-end diagnosis, not a hardware prescription for every server.

Separate RAM-cache results from disk results

Repeated reads may come from the operating system’s page cache, making storage appear faster than it is. NVIDIA’s GPUDirect Storage benchmarking guidance warns that page cache can provide much higher throughput and lower latency than storage. Compare warm-cache behavior with a test that bypasses page cache when assessing the underlying device. Use the bypass test to characterize storage and the warm-cache test to understand the system’s best case; neither alone describes every production access pattern.

Choose storage for the access pattern

Storage option Where it can fit What to validate
Capacity HDDs Large libraries with predominantly sequential media reads and cost-per-capacity constraints. Measure sustained throughput per drive and concurrent reads at peak load. Spindle contention and rebuilds can reduce available performance. Microsoft documents HDD capacity paired with faster cache in Storage Spaces Direct.
SATA or SAS SSDs Workloads needing lower latency or more random I/O than HDDs, within the controller and endurance budget. Check sustained performance, interface limits, thermal behavior, and write endurance if ingest or transcoding creates substantial writes.
NVMe SSDs High-throughput or low-latency local storage, either as a cache or all-flash layer. Check PCIe lanes and topology, sustained rather than burst results, endurance, cooling, and the rest of the host path. Microsoft’s Storage Spaces Direct documentation describes NVMe as higher in IOPS and throughput and lower in latency than supported drive types other than PMem in that product context.
Flash cache plus HDD capacity A library with repeatedly accessed hot files and a larger, less frequently read collection. Measure cache hits and misses and size against the active working set. A cache helps only when it serves enough of the actual reads; a cache that is too small can churn.
Striped or RAID 10 arrangement Parallel I/O when member-drive throughput is demonstrably limiting and the capacity and failure trade-offs are acceptable. Validate aggregate performance on the target server. RAID level changes usable capacity and failure tolerance; RAID is not a backup. AWS discusses RAID 10 in its Storage Gateway performance guidance, which does not establish a universal layout for self-hosted servers.

There is no independent universal benchmark in the cited material comparing HDD, SSD, and NVMe for this unspecified streaming workload. Choose based on measured access patterns and sustained results rather than drive labels alone.

Size cache from the hot working set

Identify which files are requested repeatedly and what share of reads the cache actually serves. Microsoft says Storage Spaces Direct cache should accommodate the active working set. Its documentation offers 10% of HDD capacity as a possible starting point for that product context, with an example of 1.6 TB cache for 16 TB HDD capacity; it also gives 5% as a possible starting point for some all-flash configurations, with an example of 1.5 TB cache for 28.8 TB SSD capacity. These are Storage Spaces Direct examples, not general sizing rules for a streaming server.

A cache smaller than frequently reused data may continually evict useful files. A larger cache is not automatically better if the active set is small or requests rarely repeat. Track hit rates and misses under representative load before expanding it.

Test changes and protect continuous service

  1. Save the baseline: record workload, p50/p95/p99 latency if available, sustained MB/s or GB/s, IOPS, stream starts and stalls, CPU, memory, and network utilization.
  2. Change one major variable: for example, move a measured hot set to flash or alter the array layout. Avoid changing several components at once, so the effect remains attributable.
  3. Repeat the same workload: keep file sizes, access pattern, concurrency, and test duration comparable. Check whether sustained performance and playback symptoms improve, not merely a short peak number.
  4. Keep a rollback path: retain the previous configuration and know how to restore media and service if a tuning change causes errors or worse performance.
  5. Plan for drive failure separately: provide backups for media and configuration, monitoring, appropriate redundancy or spare capacity, and a replacement and recovery procedure. Consider rebuild or resynchronization time as well as normal read speed.

Microsoft’s Storage Spaces Direct guidance says its documented configurations are generally recommended up to approximately 400 TB per server and notes that larger capacity can lengthen resynchronization after downtime or reboot. That figure is specific to that product guidance, not a general limit or target for streaming servers. Faster storage by itself does not make a service highly available, and the cited sources do not establish a universal self-hosted high-availability design.

When a CDN can help more than faster disks

For public delivery to geographically distributed viewers, a CDN can serve cached requests and reduce repeated origin reads. Google Cloud’s media guidance recommends routing customer reads through a CDN for VoD and live content at concurrent-viewer scale; caching, origin shielding, and request coalescing can reduce origin pressure. A CDN does not replace a suitable origin. Check cacheability, freshness requirements, and live-segment behavior for the delivery setup, and diagnose whether the origin or the network path is actually constrained before investing in more storage.

Common storage-performance problems

Playback stalls while disks appear busy

Compare latency and throughput with CPU and network use. Saturated storage or rising latency points toward the drive, controller, queueing, filesystem, or cache; a saturated network with idle disks points elsewhere in the delivery path. Confirm the test includes peak concurrency and simultaneous writes if the server ingests or transcodes.

Benchmark scores are excellent but viewers still buffer

The benchmark may be reading repeated data from RAM, testing only a short burst, or using a different access pattern from production. Compare cache-bypassed and warm-cache reads, run a sustained test, and use representative file sizes and concurrency.

Adding an SSD cache changes little

Check whether the workload reuses a hot set and whether cache hit rates actually rise. If reads rarely repeat, or the active set exceeds cache capacity and churns, flash may not address the bottleneck. Check the network and host path as well.

More drives or RAID do not solve the limit

Striping can raise aggregate disk throughput only when member-drive performance is the constraint. Controller or bus limits, network saturation, host load, or a workload dominated by a different I/O pattern can prevent a gain. Validate performance and failure behavior on the target system; keep backups because RAID is not a backup.

Performance degrades during rebuilds or recovery

Rebuilds compete for resources and can affect service performance. Include recovery activity in capacity planning, maintain appropriate spare capacity, monitor the array, and determine whether the recovery time meets the service’s needs before relying on a layout for continuous operation.
