Sharper, more reliable Puppeteer screenshots come from controlling the rendered state—not from a single “DPI” switch. Set the viewport and device scale before navigation, wait for the page’s real content, fonts and images, freeze visual changes, then choose the correct capture region and image format. The workflow below gives you deterministic pixels for viewport, full-page, clipped and element screenshots.
1. Set the viewport and device metrics before navigation
Puppeteer captures CSS pixels rendered by Chromium. If the viewport changes after the page loads, responsive breakpoints can move, images can select different sources and the page may reload. Establish geometry first.
Choose a deliberate viewport
Use the CSS width and height your screenshot is intended to represent. A desktop review might use 1440×900; a mobile capture should use the target handset width rather than shrinking a desktop page afterward. Set deviceScaleFactor for sharper raster output on high-density displays, but keep the CSS viewport unchanged when comparing layouts.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 1440,
height: 900,
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
isMobile: false,
hasTouch: false
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', {waitUntil: 'networkidle2'});
await page.screenshot({path: 'desktop.png', fullPage: true});
await browser.close();
})();
Use device emulation when the device is the requirement
page.emulate(device) applies the device’s user agent and viewport. Call it before page.goto(). Resizing or changing emulation can reload a page, so do not alter these settings during capture.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Wait for the page’s actual ready state
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is a useful baseline, and Puppeteer’s screenshot guide uses it before page.screenshot(). It only describes network activity, however. A single-page app may still be fetching data, a web font may still be changing line breaks, and lazy images may not exist in the DOM yet.
Wait for the selector that proves rendering is complete
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-report-ready]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 30000
});
Prefer an application-owned marker such as data-report-ready over a generic container. If the page exposes a loading state, wait for it to disappear as well.
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
const loading = document.querySelector('.loading');
return !loading && document.querySelectorAll('.chart').length > 0;
}, {timeout: 30000});
Wait for fonts and images that affect layout
Fonts can alter wrapping after the initial paint. Images can reserve no space until they load, producing a shifted or blank screenshot. Wait for both when they matter to the composition.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
if (document.fonts) await document.fonts.ready;
const images = Array.from(document.images);
await Promise.all(images.map(img => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, {once: true});
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, {once: true});
});
}));
});
For pages that intentionally lazy-load below the fold, waiting alone is insufficient. Scroll through the document before a full-page capture so those resources are requested.

await page.evaluate(async () => {
await new Promise(resolve => {
let y = 0;
const step = Math.max(300, window.innerHeight - 100);
const timer = setInterval(() => {
window.scrollBy(0, step);
y += step;
if (y >= document.body.scrollHeight) {
clearInterval(timer);
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
resolve();
}
}, 100);
});
});
await page.waitForTimeout(500);
3. Stabilize animations, transitions and dynamic content
Animated cursors, carousels, skeleton loaders and blinking carets make otherwise identical runs differ. When repeatability matters, inject a temporary stylesheet before capture.
await page.addStyleTag({content: `
*, *::before, *::after {
animation: none !important;
transition: none !important;
caret-color: transparent !important;
scroll-behavior: auto !important;
}
`});
Freeze clocks or mock random data only when your application permits it. Do not hide content merely to make a screenshot look cleaner: hide only known overlays, consent dialogs or elements that are outside the intended composition. If a cookie banner covers the page, dismiss it through the same flow a user would use, or configure a test environment where consent is already recorded.
4. Match the capture method to the framing problem
Full-page capture
Use fullPage: true when you need the complete scrollable document. It is not the same as a taller viewport: Chromium stitches the page while preserving the chosen CSS width.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'full-page.png',
fullPage: true,
type: 'png'
});
Long pages can expose sticky headers repeatedly or reveal layout bugs that do not appear in the viewport. Test the resulting image dimensions and consider splitting extremely long documents for downstream systems.

Use clip for a precise rectangle in page coordinates. The rectangle must have positive width and height and fit the page’s coordinate space.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'hero.png',
clip: {x: 0, y: 0, width: 1440, height: 700},
captureBeyondViewport: true,

Element screenshots
For a component, wait for the element and call ElementHandle.screenshot(). This avoids hand-maintaining coordinates when the component moves at different breakpoints.
const card = await page.waitForSelector('[data-testid="invoice-card"]', {
visible: true
});
await card.screenshot({path: 'invoice-card.png', type: 'png'});
Know when to use a viewport screenshot
Omit fullPage and clip for the visible viewport only. This is usually the most predictable choice for dashboards, above-the-fold marketing images and visual regression tests that compare a fixed frame.
5. Select PNG, JPEG or WebP deliberately
| Format | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Text, UI edges, diagrams and transparency | Lossless but usually larger |
| JPEG | Photographic content where smaller files matter | Lossy; can show ringing around text and sharp edges |
| WebP | Smaller web delivery with adjustable compression | Compression can reduce fine detail |
Puppeteer’s quality option is a 0–100 setting for supported compressed formats and does not apply to PNG. Set the format explicitly so a library upgrade or default change cannot alter your output.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'preview.webp',
type: 'webp',
quality: 88,
fullPage: true
});
Use PNG as the reference artifact for text-heavy visual tests. Generate JPEG or WebP derivatives only when transfer size is more important than pixel fidelity.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
6. Keep screenshot operations isolated
Puppeteer coordinates screenshot operations inside a BrowserContext. Do not change the viewport, scroll position, DOM or styles while page.screenshot() is running. In parallel jobs, give each page its own context and avoid sharing mutable state.
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
// Configure this page completely, then capture it.
await page.screenshot({path: 'isolated.png'});
await context.close();
Return image bytes when you need to upload them directly:
const bytes = await page.screenshot({type: 'png'});
// bytes is a Buffer in Node.js
7. A complete quality-focused Puppeteer script
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({headless: true});
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 2});
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-dashboard-ready]', {
visible: true,
timeout: 30000
});
await page.evaluate(async () => {
if (document.fonts) await document.fonts.ready;
await Promise.all(Array.from(document.images).map(img => {
if (img.complete) return Promise.resolve();
return new Promise(resolve => {
img.addEventListener('load', resolve, {once: true});
img.addEventListener('error', resolve, {once: true});
});
}));
});
await page.addStyleTag({content: `
*, *::before, *::after {
animation: none !important;
transition: none !important;
caret-color: transparent !important;
}
`});
await page.screenshot({
path: 'dashboard.png',
fullPage: true,
type: 'png'
});
await browser.close();
})();
8. Troubleshooting common quality failures
The screenshot is blurry
- Check that the intended CSS viewport and
deviceScaleFactorwere set before navigation. - Use PNG for text and interface screenshots.
- Do not enlarge a small screenshot after capture; capture at the required CSS dimensions and scale.
Text wraps differently between runs
- Wait for
document.fonts.ready. - Fix the viewport width and device metrics before navigation.
- Disable animations and ensure the same data is rendered each run.
The full-page image has blank or missing sections
- Scroll through the document to trigger lazy loading.
- Wait for the page-specific ready selector and image completion.
- Investigate failed requests separately; network idle cannot make a failed asset appear.
A cookie banner, chat bubble or popup covers the content
- Dismiss it through the page’s UI and persist consent in the context.
- Use a controlled test state or hide a known non-content selector only when that matches your capture requirements.
The capture times out
- Use a realistic navigation timeout and a narrower readiness condition instead of waiting indefinitely for every request.
- Some applications keep analytics or streaming connections open;
networkidle2may never represent “finished.” Wait for your application marker instead.
The clip is empty or misaligned
- Calculate the rectangle after layout has stabilized.
- Check that
x,y,widthandheightare positive and in the expected coordinate system. - Use an element screenshot when the target is a moving component.
9. Performance, reliability and cost decisions
Higher device scale factors increase pixel count, memory use and file size. Use them when visual detail requires it, not as a substitute for a correct viewport. Full-page screenshots take longer and consume more memory than viewport or element captures, especially after lazy content has been loaded.
For repeatable visual regression, pin the browser/runtime used by your build, keep test data stable, use one page or context per job, and store the capture metadata (URL, viewport, scale factor, format and timestamp) alongside the image. Compare PNG references before introducing compressed formats.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer have a DPI setting?
Puppeteer controls CSS viewport dimensions and device scale factor rather than a print-style DPI setting. Set those metrics before navigation and capture at the required dimensions.
Should I always use fullPage?
No. Use fullPage for the complete scrollable document, clip for a fixed rectangle, an element screenshot for a component, and a normal screenshot for the visible viewport.
Is networkidle2 enough for a high-quality screenshot?
It is a useful navigation baseline, but application data, fonts, lazy images and animations may still be unsettled. Add waits for the states that determine your page’s final layout.
