In OBS Studio, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard, choose your streaming use and service, then apply the proposed settings as a starting point. The wizard considers your intended use, computer resources, and—in streaming mode—network conditions. It can reduce guesswork, but it cannot guarantee a clear, stable stream: test with the kind of motion and audio you plan to broadcast, check the target platform’s current encoder requirements, and adjust based on what you observe.

What automatic encoder settings can—and cannot—do

OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard estimates settings for your intended use and available system resources; for streaming, it also considers network conditions. OBS describes it as a way to get a sensible starting configuration, not a substitute for checking how your actual stream performs. OBS’s Quick Start Guide, published August 25, 2021, explains the factors the wizard considers. Its Help Portal likewise recommends using the wizard for basic settings.

Automatic setup cannot account perfectly for every fast-moving scene, detailed game, changing connection, or platform ingest configuration. A stream can still look soft or stutter because of the output resolution or frame rate, scene complexity, network instability, or encoding performance. The evidence here does not establish one universal cause—or a measured amount by which the wizard improves quality—so diagnose from the stream’s symptoms and test one change at a time.

Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard

  1. Open OBS Studio and select Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
  2. Choose the option that matches your goal, such as streaming, and select the streaming service you intend to use.
  3. Let OBS assess your computer and, for streaming, network conditions. Review and apply its proposed configuration.
  4. Run a test stream before an important broadcast. Treat the result as a baseline to verify, not a guarantee that the final stream will look or perform as intended.

If you change computers, network conditions, service, or the kind of content you stream, run the wizard again or reassess your settings. The proposed setup depends on that context.

Check the platform’s encoder requirements

Use the requirements published by your streaming platform. Protocols, supported codecs, bitrate recommendations, and resolution handling can differ between services. The figures below are YouTube Live ingestion recommendations, not universal settings. YouTube’s Help page does not state a publication year for these figures; they were accessed October 3, 2026. Check the current YouTube encoder settings guidance before a live event.

Ingestion resolution and frame rate H.264 recommended bitrate AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommendations for the codec and ingestion target shown in each row. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Use a codec your encoder and YouTube ingest both support, and match the bitrate recommendation to that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not carry YouTube’s values over to another platform as if they were its requirements.

Automatic resolution detection on YouTube

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats. For custom stream keys, its Live Control Room detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default, with manual resolution selection also available. This downstream processing does not remove the need to send a suitable, stable input stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for platform details.

Test with a representative stream

Before going live to an audience, test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static desktop scene is not a useful stand-in for fast gameplay, scrolling text, or a camera scene with substantial motion. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube Help describes these checks.

Diagnose blur, stutter, and dropped frames

The image looks blurry or loses detail

Check whether your selected resolution and frame rate fit the bitrate you configured and the platform recommends for the chosen codec. YouTube’s recommendations differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265, and between ingestion targets. Fast motion or a complex scene may also be harder to encode cleanly than a static scene. Change one setting at a time, then repeat a representative test; lowering the output target can be a practical trade-off if the desired configuration does not deliver reliably.

OBS reports dropped frames

A dropped-frame counter can indicate that the connection to the remote streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It is not proof that the encoder itself is the cause. OBS recommends checking the network path, which can include the modem, router, network cable, network card, or another network device. Inspect or replace a component only when troubleshooting points to it; buying equipment is not a universal fix. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance, dated September 30, 2024.

Consider dynamic bitrate only as a fallback

OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate during network congestion to avoid dropping frames. That can help maintain delivery, but it reduces video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Treat it as a resilience measure, not an image-quality improvement; investigate the connection as well. OBS explains the trade-off in its stream connection troubleshooting guide.
