To improve live sports streaming on your TV, first check whether the streaming service is having an interruption. Then test another device on the same connection, check your home network, and only after that troubleshoot the streaming device, HDMI connection, and TV settings. This order helps distinguish a provider problem from Wi-Fi trouble or a display setup issue.

1. Check whether the streaming service is having a problem

A service interruption can look like a problem with your Wi-Fi or TV. Check the streaming provider’s status page before changing your setup. For Apple TV app playback, Apple recommends checking Apple System Status or the third-party provider’s website if content will not start.

Try the same stream on another phone, tablet, or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi or mobile network. If playback fails on that device too, Apple advises contacting your internet service provider. If other people in your home are streaming or downloading, pause that activity briefly and see whether the TV stream improves.

2. Check the home network

A speed test can help, but it does not show every cause of buffering. Wi-Fi coverage, interference, router placement, and the number of devices using the connection can also affect playback. Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer connection guidance recommends checking these conditions for its devices.

Try these checks before buying equipment

  • Confirm the TV streaming device is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use.
  • If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try 5 GHz as Google suggests for compatible Chromecast and Google TV Streamer devices.
  • Restart the streaming device and router, and check whether the router has a firmware update available.
  • Move the streaming device away from likely Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference sources, and consider whether the router is too far away. Google’s 20-foot placement recommendation is specific to the devices covered by its guidance, not a universal distance for every home or router.
  • Consider how many connected devices are using the network at the same time. If the problem is weak wireless coverage, mesh networking may be an option, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

When an Ethernet connection may help

A wired connection can bypass weak or congested Wi-Fi near the TV, but compatibility matters: the streaming device must support Ethernet directly or with the correct adapter. Google’s Ethernet adapter instructions apply to compatible Chromecast devices and require the relevant adapter, an Ethernet cable connected to a working router, and power. Do not assume that a TV’s Ethernet port or a generic adapter will work with every streaming device.

Google describes a wired connection this way: “Use an Ethernet adapter to connect your streaming device to your router. This will give you a direct, hardwire connection to the internet and alleviate your home Wi-Fi network.”

3. Check speed expectations for your service and resolution

Published speed figures are guidance for specific products and playback conditions, not guarantees of smooth live sports in every home. Google recommends at least 20 Mbps for its specified 4K streaming setup on supported devices with compatible 4K equipment and programming. Apple says HD content in the Apple TV app requires 8 Mbit/s or faster. The figures come from different providers and apply to different contexts, so they are not interchangeable thresholds for every sports app.

4. Troubleshoot the streaming device and TV connection

If the network seems adequate, check the signal path between the streaming device, any receiver or soundbar, and the TV. Google’s advice here is for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer; other devices and televisions may use different menu names and options.

Work through the device and HDMI checks

  1. Check whether the streaming device has a firmware update available, then restart it and the Wi-Fi router.
  2. Confirm the TV and any connected receiver or soundbar support the resolution selected on the streaming device.
  3. Make sure the streaming device is connected to the intended HDMI input and that the HDMI cable supports the selected video format.
  4. If playback remains poor, try changing motion compensation settings, disabling HDR formats, or reducing output resolution from 4K to 1080p, where those options are available.

These checks follow Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer video troubleshooting guidance. Menu labels, support for HDR, and motion settings vary by model.

Choose the fix that matches the cause

What you find Next step Compatibility or scope
The provider reports an interruption, or playback fails on another device on the same connection. Check the provider’s status and follow its guidance; if playback also fails on another device, contact your internet service provider. Changing TV hardware will not resolve a provider-side interruption.
Playback improves when other household internet activity pauses. Reduce competing activity during the game and consider the number of devices sharing the connection. This addresses network load, not weak Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home.
Wireless signal near the TV appears weak or inconsistent. Improve router placement or consider mesh coverage; use Ethernet if the streaming device supports it directly or through a compatible adapter. Mesh can address coverage; a wired connection serves the device location. Neither guarantees better playback for every service.
The connection seems adequate, but the TV picture still stutters or has display issues. Check device firmware, HDMI input and cable, connected receiver or soundbar, resolution, HDR, and motion settings. Available settings and supported formats depend on the device and TV.
