Start with one soft, controllable light on your face—or face a window. Add fill only if the shadows are too strong, keep bright background lights subdued, and use a backlight only if you need more separation from the background. A three-light kit is not required.
Start with a key light
Your key light is the main source illuminating your face. Sit facing a window, or place a light in front of you near the camera. For more shape, move it slightly off the camera axis rather than placing it directly in front. Check your camera preview as you adjust the position and brightness; the goal is a clear, natural-looking face, not a particular equipment arrangement.
A window can work well as a key, including a side window, but daylight changes as the day and weather change. If your room’s light varies or you need repeatable brightness, an adjustable artificial light gives you more control. B&H’s streaming advice recommends a key light with controllable brightness and natural or bright-white light for neutral colors (B&H streaming tips; publication date not shown). Judge the color in your actual camera preview rather than relying on a universal color-temperature setting.
Soften harsh shadows with fill
If the key creates shadows that look too dark, add a softer fill on the shadow side of your face. Fill can come from another light, but it does not have to: a white card or reflector can bounce some of the key light back toward you. B&H’s guidance puts it simply: “Use a softer ‘fill light’ to reduce shadows on your face from the keylight.” (B&H streaming tips.)

Move a reflector closer or change its angle to increase or redirect the bounced light; move it farther away when the fill is too strong. This lets you soften the shadow without adding another powered source. Keep the background from competing with your face
Look at the full camera frame, not just your face. A bright lamp, window or other strong source behind you can draw attention away from the subject. Reduce its brightness, change your position, or adjust the framing if the background is overpowering you.

If you blend into a dark or similarly colored background, try a restrained light from behind or to the side to create an edge around your hair or shoulders. This separation light is optional: too much can become distracting. Key, fill and backlight are useful roles to understand, not a requirement to buy three lights (B&H’s overview of three-point portrait lighting and beyond).
Choose a setup that fits your space

These are practical trade-offs, not results from a head-to-head lighting test. B&H describes ring lights for creator uses and reflectors or bounce cards for redirecting light (B&H creator lighting strategies). A window and a white reflective surface may be enough to get started.

Set up and check the actual stream image
- Frame your camera. Sit where you will stream and open the camera preview. The lighting advice applies whether you use a webcam or a more elaborate camera setup; YouTube distinguishes webcam and encoder methods for going live (YouTube Creator Academy: Get started with live streaming).
- Place the key. Face a window or put a controllable light in front of you. Shift it slightly to one side if direct frontal light looks flat, and adjust its brightness while watching the preview.
- Correct only the shadows that bother you. Add softer fill on the shadow side or bounce the existing light with a reflector or white card. Change the reflector’s distance and angle until the fill looks balanced.
- Check the background. Reduce bright sources behind you. If you disappear into the background, test a subtle back or edge light and lower it if it draws attention.
- Make a final preview check. Look at your face, background and color together. Adjust brightness and the light’s apparent color until your face looks clear and colors look neutral to you. There is no single brightness or color-temperature target established for every room and camera in the sources cited here.
