To make sorting faster in JavaScript or TypeScript, first use a correct, inexpensive comparator and avoid repeating costly calculations inside it. If sorting depends on an expensive derived key, compute that key once per item and sort the cached values—but benchmark the change, because the extra passes and allocations can outweigh the savings. TypeScript annotations improve type safety; they do not make JavaScript sorting faster at runtime.

Start with the right comparator

Without a comparator, Array.prototype.sort() compares values after converting them to strings. That can put numbers in lexicographic rather than numeric order. For numeric values, use an explicit numeric comparator:

const sortedNumbers = numbers.toSorted((a, b) => a - b);

A comparator should return a negative number when a belongs before b, a positive number when it belongs after b, and zero when they are equivalent for sorting. It should be consistent and free of side effects. Avoid changing the data being sorted, consulting state that can change during the sort, or returning only 1 and 0; an inconsistent comparator can produce different results across engines. See MDN’s Array.sort() reference.

TypeScript example

type RecordItem = { score: number; name: string };

const byScore = (a: RecordItem, b: RecordItem): number =>
  a.score - b.score;

const sortedItems = items.toSorted(byScore);

The annotations help catch mismatched data and comparator return types during development. The sorting work still happens through the JavaScript runtime’s array-sorting behavior.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Cache expensive sort keys when they are the bottleneck

If a comparator repeatedly parses, normalizes, or otherwise derives a value from each item, that work may be performed many times during sorting. A decorate-sort-undecorate pattern computes the key once per item, sorts temporary records by that key, then extracts the original items:

const sorted = items
  .map((item) => ({ item, key: expensiveKey(item) }))
  .sort((a, b) => compareKeys(a.key, b.key))
  .map(({ item }) => item);

This reduces repeated key computation, but creates temporary records and makes additional passes over the data. It is worth trying when key derivation is measurably expensive; for a cheap numeric field, a direct comparator is usually simpler and may be faster. MDN describes this approach in its discussion of sorting with a map.

Choose mutation and copying deliberately

sort() changes the array in place and returns a reference to that same array. toSorted() returns a sorted copy instead. Use the method that matches whether the caller’s original array must remain unchanged; copying is a semantic choice, not an automatic performance optimization. MDN reports toSorted() as widely available across browsers since July 2023, but check your browser or server runtime targets if older environments matter. See MDN’s toSorted() reference.

What performance JavaScript guarantees—and what it does not

Modern ECMAScript requires stable array sorting: values that compare as equal retain their relative input order. The specification does not mandate a sorting algorithm or a time or space complexity bound. MDN likewise notes that sort performance characteristics depend on the implementation; see its Array.sort() reference and the ECMAScript specification.

V8 documents its use of Timsort, but that is an implementation detail, not a portable guarantee for every browser or JavaScript server runtime. V8’s 2018 article reported an “up to 17×” speedup for a particular workload of two reverse-sorted runs against a Quicksort baseline—not a general speedup promise. The article also explains why comparator calls can matter: in dynamic languages, comparisons often execute user code and can cost substantially more than memory access. See V8’s “Getting things sorted in V8”.

When typed arrays are relevant

If numeric data is already held in a typed array, TypedArray.prototype.sort() uses numeric ordering by default and sorts the typed array in place. This differs from an ordinary array’s default string-based comparison. Converting ordinary data to a typed array solely in hopes of a speedup adds work; measure the full workload before deciding. See MDN’s TypedArray.sort() reference.

Benchmark the real workload

There is no universal native-sort speed ranking or reliable complexity guarantee to apply across JavaScript engines. Compare changes in the browser or server runtime you actually deploy, using representative input sizes and distributions. Random, already sorted, reverse-sorted, and partly ordered data can behave differently; the cost of the comparator and the memory used by copies or cached-key records also affect the result.
