Three Apple TV settings can help match a video’s picture format, make speech easier to hear, and show subtitles automatically in certain situations. On Apple TV 4K, find them under Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content, in playback audio options, and under subtitle settings. Availability depends on the Apple TV model, display, video, region, and connected audio equipment.
1. Match the picture to the video
Apple TV 4K can change its output to match a video’s dynamic range and frame rate. This is useful when your television supports the source format and you want the output to track it, rather than using one setting for every video.
- Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content.
- Turn on Match Dynamic Range to match the original dynamic range of the video.
- Turn on Match Frame Rate to match the source frame rate where supported.
Apple documents matching for content encoded at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second, with regional refresh-rate differences and frame-rate doubling in some cases. Your television must support the relevant format; do not assume every display supports every rate. If a format is unverified, Apple recommends testing it in Match Content before relying on it. A brief blank screen or flicker can occur while the television switches formats. Apple Support’s article, published March 18, 2025, says: “You may experience a blank screen or flickering as your television switches between formats.” If the picture does not return, check that the display supports the selected format and use Apple’s guidance to test or reset the video setting.

2. Make dialogue clearer or reduce loud peaks
Audio options are available during playback when supported by the current video and audio setup. Open the playback controls, choose Audio Options, and look for dialogue or loudness controls. The exact choices can depend on the content, speakers or headphones, and Apple TV model; some defaults can also be changed in Settings > Video and Audio. Enhance Dialogue
Choose Enhance to make dialogue more prominent with minimal impact on the original mix. Enhance More makes speech very prominent, but Apple notes that it may alter the original mix. Try the lower level first if you want clearer speech without as much change to how the program sounds.

Reduce Loud Sounds
Turn on Reduce Loud Sounds to lower the overall sound by reducing dynamic range. Loud music and effects become less loud relative to other sounds, which can help when you want to avoid sharp volume differences. It is a loudness adjustment, not a guarantee that every voice will be clearer.

3. Automate subtitles for specific situations
Apple TV 4K subtitle preferences can show subtitles for different languages, set a subtitle language, display them when playback is muted, or briefly show them after skipping back. Open Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning to review available subtitle controls; labels and availability may vary by model and region. Apple’s subtitle settings guide explains these options.

- Show for Different Languages: Show subtitles when the video’s language differs from your selected language, where supported.
- Subtitle Language: Set the preferred subtitle language when the video offers it.
- Show When Muted: Automatically display subtitles during muted playback. Apple says this is not supported when TV volume is controlled by an infrared remote.
- Show on Skip Back: Temporarily show subtitles after you skip back, useful for catching a line you missed.
These preferences do not create captions: the video must provide subtitles or captions, and availability varies among videos and regions.

If picture output still looks wrong or a connection is unreliable, Apple TV 4K also provides controls for Format, HDMI Output, and Chroma, plus HDMI connection checks and reset options. Available choices depend on the Apple TV model, connected display, and selected aspect-ratio and format settings. Apple says YCbCr is preferred for most TVs. RGB output should match the television’s settings and requires a high-speed HDMI cable; 4:4:4 chroma can improve clarity but also requires one, while 4:2:0 is described as compatible with most TVs and HDMI cables. Check the specifications for your TV or receiver before changing these options; this is a configuration-specific requirement, not a reason every owner needs a new cable. When accessibility settings are a better fit
For needs beyond these three adjustments, Apple TV 4K includes accessibility features such as VoiceOver, Zoom, text display controls, light, color and contrast options, Reduce Motion, audio descriptions, caption settings, and dialogue isolation.
