Start by finding out whether the slowdown is on the hotspot’s cellular connection or on its Wi‑Fi connection to your phone or computer. Move the hotspot near a window, check its signal and network type, then test Wi‑Fi, your data plan, and carrier conditions before buying an antenna. Each fix addresses a different bottleneck, and none guarantees a particular speed.
Identify which connection is slow
A portable hotspot receives data over a cellular network and shares that connection with nearby devices over Wi‑Fi. A weak cellular link and a weak hotspot-to-device Wi‑Fi link are different problems: improving one will not necessarily improve the other. Verizon describes its mobile hotspot service as sharing the Verizon network through Wi‑Fi (Verizon mobile hotspot FAQ).
First compare the hotspot’s signal indicator and displayed network type with the connection quality on a device close to it. Signal bars can offer a clue, but they do not diagnose every speed problem. Cellular reception, the hotspot’s local Wi‑Fi, carrier congestion, and plan limits can all affect what you experience.

1. Move the hotspot and check its signal
Test a few nearby locations, including near a window with a clear view of the sky. Check whether the signal indicator, network type, and connection performance change. The Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot User Manual recommends moving the device when reception is poor: “Try moving it to a location with a clear view of the sky (for example, near a window)” (Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot User Manual). This is manufacturer guidance for that hotspot family, not a measured speed promise or a universal best orientation.

2. Check the hotspot-to-device Wi‑Fi
If cellular reception seems adequate but a nearby laptop or phone has a weak connection to the hotspot, investigate local Wi‑Fi rather than assuming the cellular signal is the problem. Restarting the hotspot may help it find a better Wi‑Fi channel. If the model offers more than one Wi‑Fi band, try the other supported band and compare the connection where you use it.
Do not confuse Wi‑Fi at 5 GHz with cellular 5G: they are separate wireless links. The Nighthawk manual lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi profiles for its model, and notes that signal strength and interfering radio sources can affect data transfer speed (Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot User Manual). Capabilities and menu labels vary by hotspot.

3. Use USB tethering if your hotspot supports it
For a computer, USB-C tethering can bypass the hotspot’s Wi‑Fi link. The Nighthawk manual documents USB-C tethering for its model (Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot User Manual). This can help isolate or avoid a local Wi‑Fi bottleneck; it does not increase the capacity of the hotspot’s cellular connection. Check your device manual for support and setup instructions.
Check your plan and the carrier network
If moving the hotspot and changing how your device connects do not help, check your account’s hotspot data allowance and current carrier coverage. Plan rules differ and can change. Verizon’s support material says speeds may decrease after a plan’s monthly high-speed allowance is used; its examples are specific to certain plans and should not be applied to other plans or carriers (Verizon mobile hotspot FAQ; Verizon plan support).

Carrier network capacity and congestion can also limit speed, even when the hotspot is receiving a usable signal. Network-side technologies such as beamforming, massive MIMO, and carrier aggregation are discussed in the FCC’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report as factors related to capacity, coverage, and service quality; they are not settings a hotspot owner can turn on to resolve congestion (FCC 2024 Communications Marketplace Report).

An external antenna or a cradle with built-in high-gain antennas is a conditional option when the diagnosed issue is weak cellular reception. The Nighthawk manual suggests these possibilities for low network signal, but its guidance applies to that device family—not every portable hotspot (Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot User Manual).

Before buying, check the exact hotspot model’s manual for antenna support, ports, connector type, and supported bands. An antenna that cannot connect to or work with your model will not solve the problem, and even a compatible accessory does not guarantee a speed increase. Placement and cable loss can matter; AT&T’s guidance on those concerns is for a 5G gateway, so it does not establish portable-hotspot compatibility (AT&T antenna placement guidance).

Choose a fix that matches the bottleneck
| What seems to be limiting the connection | Try | What the step can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Weak cellular reception | Test locations near a window; consider an antenna only if the exact model supports it. | Addresses reception. Location advice is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed speed gain. |
| Weak hotspot-to-device Wi‑Fi | Restart the hotspot, try another supported Wi‑Fi band, or use supported USB tethering. | Addresses the local link, not cellular capacity. |
| Used hotspot allowance or plan limit | Check current plan terms and account usage with your carrier. | Clarifies plan restrictions; moving the hotspot cannot remove them. |
| Congestion or limited carrier capacity | Check carrier conditions and coverage. | Identifies a network-side constraint; the hotspot owner cannot enable carrier capacity features. |
