Connect an SD card reader that matches your iPhone’s charging port, then use Photos to import the videos. USB-C and Lightning iPhones need different readers, and the Photos screens vary by iOS version.
Choose a reader that fits your iPhone
Check the charging port on your iPhone before connecting or buying a reader. Apple lists a USB-C to SD Card Reader for USB-C devices and Lightning-compatible readers and camera adapters for Lightning devices, including the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader. A USB-C reader does not fit a Lightning iPhone. Apple’s camera-adapter guidance lists supported adapters.

Apple identifies USB 3 transfer-speed support for the adapter workflow on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple says other adapters and iOS devices use USB 2 speeds. These are interface-speed specifications, not estimates of how long a particular video will take to copy. Apple’s adapter article has the details.

- Connect the compatible reader or adapter to the iPhone.
- Insert the SD card into the reader. Do not force it if it does not fit.
- Open Photos. The location of the import controls depends on the iOS version: Apple’s adapter article documents Photos > Collections > Devices for iOS 18 and describes an Imports tab; Apple’s iPhone guide says to tap Import. Follow the control shown on your device. See Apple’s camera-adapter instructions and Apple’s iPhone guide.
- Choose Import All, or select the videos you want and tap Import.
- When prompted, choose whether to keep or delete the imported media on the card. Disconnect the reader when the transfer is complete.
What to expect from Photos import
This workflow is intended for camera media, not as a universal way to copy any file stored on an SD card. Apple’s support documentation states: “Apple camera adapters can import only content that was captured by digital cameras.” Renamed, edited, or copied-to-card items may not import through this workflow. Apple’s adapter guidance explains these limitations.

Video format matters, too. Apple warns that an unsupported format may not be viewable on iPhone; it may still be possible to import the file to a computer later. Do not assume that every video on a card can be imported into or played from Photos.
Use Files to browse external storage
For file browsing or access to other supported files, connect the card and look for it in Files. Apple says iPhone can access supported external storage through Files and other compatible apps. Viewing or copying a file through Files is a separate workflow; it does not by itself mean the video has been imported into the Photos library. Apple’s external-storage guide covers supported devices and formats.

If the card or Import button does not appear
- Check the connection: Disconnect and reconnect the adapter, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect the card or camera.
- Check the camera: If using a camera rather than a bare card reader, make sure it is powered on and set to the appropriate transfer mode.
- Update and restart: Update iOS, then restart the iPhone and camera.
- Test another card or camera: If another card works, the original card or its data may be the cause.
- Do not format as a first fix: Formatting or resetting a card erases its images. Copy the contents somewhere safe before doing so.

Check card and external-storage compatibility
For camera-adapter image transfer, Apple lists Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), Mass Storage Device protocol, and SDSC, SDHC, miniSD, microSD, MMC, and SDXC card families. Apple says flash drives and USB thumb drives are not supported for image importing through this adapter workflow. See Apple’s adapter requirements.

For external storage accessed through Files, Apple requires a single data partition and one of these formats: APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT. Those requirements are for external-storage access; they do not guarantee that a video format can be imported into Photos or played on iPhone. Apple’s external-storage guide provides the format requirements.
