To turn a Word document into editable WordPress content, either copy and paste it into the block editor or use a DOCX importer plugin such as DocxToPost. If you only want visitors to download the original document, upload the DOCX to the Media Library and link to it instead. WordPress’s standard import tool is documented for moving content from other WordPress sites and publishing systems; it is not documented as a native DOCX-to-post importer.
Choose the right way to use your DOCX

WordPress’s official import handbook describes importing content from another WordPress site or another publishing system. For a WordPress-to-WordPress move, it specifies a WXR file. That tool is different from importing a DOCX document.
Copy and paste the document into the block editor

Create or edit the WordPress post or page where the content should appear.

In Microsoft Word, select and copy the content you want to publish. Paste it into the block editor.

Inspect the result before publishing. Check headings, lists, tables, links, spacing, and any layout features that matter. WordPress notes that copying from a document editor such as Microsoft Word can leave unrecognized formatting. If the editor offers Clear unknown formatting, you can use it and then review the layout again.

Check every pasted image in the editor. Confirm it is stored in the Media Library; WordPress identifies an upload-to-Media-Library control for saving or confirming copied images where needed.
This route avoids adding an importer plugin, but Word formatting is not guaranteed to transfer exactly. Plan to adjust the WordPress version of the content rather than assuming it will match the original document.

Import with a DOCX plugin
The WordPress.org listing for DocxToPost describes an upload-and-preview workflow that converts DOCX content into WordPress blocks. The listing says it supports posts, pages, and registered public post types available to the user’s role, and describes block output for headings, paragraphs, lists, images, tables, and quotes. It also says embedded images are uploaded to the Media Library. These are claims made on the plugin’s directory listing, not independent test results or a guarantee that every document layout will convert cleanly.

In the WordPress admin area, open the Plugins screen and find DocxToPost in the directory, or upload the plugin files. The listing describes both installation methods.

Install and activate the plugin, then open its admin menu as described on the listing.

Upload the DOCX and inspect the preview. Check the structure and images, especially if the document uses complex or nonstandard formatting.

Review the resulting post, page, or other content before publishing. Confirm that the intended images are in the Media Library and that tables, links, and headings appear as needed.

Plugin details can change. Before installing, review the current maintenance and compatibility information shown on the WordPress.org listing or in the WordPress plugin interface. WordPress also recommends keeping a current backup before plugin updates.

Upload the DOCX as a downloadable file
If readers need the original Word document rather than editable WordPress content, upload it through the Media Library or the post editor, then add a link or File block. WordPress supports document files as media. After uploading, verify that the link works for visitors. This method preserves the DOCX as a file; it does not convert the document’s text into WordPress blocks.

Formatting changes after pasting
WordPress notes that content pasted from document editors may contain unrecognized formatting. If Clear unknown formatting appears, use it if appropriate, then inspect the cleaned content and restore any needed structure or styling in the editor.
Images are missing or not stored on your site
Select each image in the editor and check whether it is in the Media Library. Use the editor’s upload-to-Media-Library control to save or confirm copied images where necessary.

A media upload fails
Check the upload again and the site’s configuration. WordPress notes that correct permissions for the wp-content directory may be needed for media uploads.
A large import fails partway through
WordPress’s import handbook warns that large files can exhaust server memory. A failed import may also have created some content. Review the site for partial or duplicate records before retrying, so a second attempt does not create additional duplicates.
Which editable-content route should you use?

Choose copy and paste for a one-off document when you want to avoid installing an importer plugin and are willing to check the formatting.

Consider a DOCX importer when you want a purpose-built upload-and-preview workflow or expect to repeat the conversion. Evaluate the plugin’s current compatibility and maintenance details, and verify the converted content before publishing.

Use a Media Library upload when the goal is to distribute the original DOCX, not to convert it into a post.
