Export your bookmarks from Chrome as an HTML file, then feed that file to ArchiveBox’s add command from your ArchiveBox collection directory. ArchiveBox reads the bookmarked URLs and adds them to the collection; it does not save the exported HTML file as a webpage.
Export bookmarks from Chrome
- On your computer, open Chrome’s More menu, then select Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager.
- In Bookmark Manager, open its More menu and choose Export Bookmarks.
- Save the HTML file somewhere accessible to the machine or container that runs ArchiveBox. Note the file’s path.
Chrome exports bookmarks as an HTML file. The export is the input list for the import, not the web content ArchiveBox will preserve.
Import the HTML file with ArchiveBox
Host installation
Run the command from your initialized ArchiveBox collection’s data directory:
archivebox add < /path/to/bookmarks.htmlFor example, if Chrome saved the file in your Downloads folder:

archivebox add < ~/Downloads/bookmarks.htmlIf you are not in the collection directory, use the documented --chdir option for your installation, or change to the collection directory before running the command. The command reads URLs from standard input; shell redirection supplies the exported file.
Docker Compose
ArchiveBox CLI commands can also be run through Docker Compose. A typical command pattern is:

docker compose run --rm -T archivebox add < bookmarks.htmlRun it in the context of your Compose setup, and check that the bookmark file is available at the path you use. Host paths, mounts, and the working directory depend on your Compose configuration, so adapt the file path rather than assuming this example is universal.
Check the imported collection
After ArchiveBox has processed the input and its archiving tasks have run, review the collection in the web interface or generated index. The import adds URLs to the collection and ArchiveBox attempts to save snapshots; importing a link does not guarantee that its destination is reachable or that a complete snapshot can be captured.

What if you meant Chrome browsing history?
Bookmarks and browsing history use different inputs. This HTML-export workflow is for bookmarks. ArchiveBox documents a separate script that exports Chrome history to JSON for importing history; you do not need that script for a bookmarks HTML file.

Troubleshooting
- ArchiveBox reports that the command or collection is unavailable: confirm ArchiveBox is installed or run the CLI through your configured Docker Compose setup, and run the command from an initialized collection directory or use the appropriate
--chdirapproach. - The input file cannot be opened: verify the path and permissions. In a container setup, make sure the file is accessible in the command’s working context or through a configured mount.
- The import runs but some sites have no usable snapshot: adding a URL is separate from successfully capturing its destination. Check the collection’s results; inaccessible pages or failed capture attempts can prevent a usable snapshot.
- You see the export file’s contents rather than imported links: use shell input redirection with
archivebox add < file.html. The HTML export supplies URLs to the command; it is not itself a page to archive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I import Chrome bookmarks from a phone using these steps?
The Chrome export procedure described here is for Chrome on a computer. The steps do not establish a mobile export workflow.

Does importing bookmarks delete them from Chrome?
No deletion step is part of this workflow: Chrome exports the bookmarks to an HTML file, which you then provide to ArchiveBox.
Can I use this file to import bookmarks into a different ArchiveBox collection?
Yes. Run the import command in the target initialized collection, or direct ArchiveBox to that collection using the supported working-directory approach for your installation.
