A practical default for a new JavaScript or TypeScript project is Playwright Test; Selenium remains a sound choice when your team already depends on WebDriver, another language binding, or an established Selenium grid.
What website regression testing should cover
Regression testing asks whether a change broke behavior that previously worked. It is not a single test type. A useful suite combines functional checks, visual checks, and the evidence needed to diagnose failures.
Map risk to user journeys
Start with outcomes rather than pages. List the flows whose failure harms users, revenue, compliance, or support load:
- Sign-in, sign-out, password reset, and account recovery.
- Primary navigation, search, and critical content discovery.
- Forms, validation, file uploads, and lead conversion.
- Checkout, payment hand-off, subscription changes, and confirmation.
- Permission boundaries for administrator, editor, and ordinary user roles.
- Any production defect that should never return.
For each journey, define controlled test data, a starting state, the user-facing actions, and an explicit expected result. “The function returned true” is weaker than “the signed-in user sees the order confirmation and its order number.”

Test the rendered experience
Playwright’s best-practice guidance says automated tests should verify what end users see and interact with, rather than implementation details such as function names or CSS classes. Prefer accessible roles, labels, visible text, and other user-facing contracts. A locator such as getByRole('button', { name: 'Submit order' }) is generally more durable than a selector tied to a framework-generated class.
Keep every test independent
Give each test its own browser context, cookies, local storage, and application state. A test that depends on another test’s login or database row will fail unpredictably when order, parallelism, or retries change. Selenium’s test-practice guidance makes the same point: fresh browsers and independent tests are safer than shared state.
Choose Playwright or Selenium
Both tools can drive real browsers. Choose according to your existing stack and the amount of infrastructure you want the test runner to provide.

No single approach works for every situation. Pick one stack for the core suite instead of duplicating identical checks in both unless browser or language requirements justify it.
Build a Playwright regression suite step by step
1. Install a pinned test environment
Use a clean project and commit the lockfile. The following commands create a JavaScript project, install Playwright Test, and download its browsers:

npx playwright install --with-depsPin the package version and the browser revision used to create visual baselines. A baseline made on one operating system, browser build, or font set can legitimately differ on another.
2. Write a user-facing smoke test
Suppose the application has a search page. The test below creates a fresh context automatically, uses a role-based locator, and asserts the result a user can see:

3. Seed and reset deterministic data
Create users, products, and permissions through an API or database fixture before each test, then clean them up or use unique identifiers. A fixture can authenticate without repeating the UI login flow in every test:

4. Control external dependencies
Test the services your team owns. Intercept payment gateways, analytics, advertising, chat, and other third-party responses so an outside outage or changing consent banner does not create a false failure:

});Keep a small separate contract or integration suite for the real provider. The regression suite should fail when your application breaks, not when an unrelated vendor changes a response.
5. Add visual assertions intentionally
Use screenshots when layout, typography, spacing, responsive behavior, or branding is part of acceptance. Create a baseline only after reviewing the page manually:

});Generate or update a baseline with npx playwright test --update-snapshots only after confirming that the change is intentional. Freeze the viewport, browser, operating system, fonts, locale, timezone, feature flags, and seeded data. Mask timestamps, rotating offers, ads, avatars, and other intentionally nondeterministic regions. Keep visual tests separate from functional checks when that makes triage clearer.
Run regression tests in continuous integration
Install dependencies and browsers on a clean runner, run a fast smoke subset on every pull request, and schedule the broader cross-browser or visual suite when its runtime is too high for every change. Publish the HTML report, screenshots, traces, and other failure artifacts.

test-results/Set a global timeout so a hung suite ends with a report. One worker is the stable default in CI; increase parallelism only after the runner has enough CPU, memory, and isolated data. When the suite is large, shard independent tests across jobs and merge the reports.

Configure traces for useful failures
Tracing the first retry gives you a timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests without paying the storage and processing cost of recording heavy video for every test:

- Wait on state, not time: assert visibility, enabled state, URL, or a controlled response.
- Use stable contracts: prefer roles, labels, and test IDs that the product team agrees to preserve.
- Reset state: create a new context and deterministic data for every test.
- Freeze nondeterminism: control clocks, random seeds, feature flags, locale, timezone, and animations where possible.
- Mock volatile services: intercept third-party requests and rotating content.
- Retry diagnostically: keep one retry in CI to capture a trace, then track the test as flaky rather than hiding the failure.
- Remove low-value checks: duplicate assertions and obsolete snapshots increase maintenance without increasing protection.
When a production bug is fixed, add a regression test that would have failed before the fix. Tag slow cross-browser and visual suites, and monitor flaky-test trends so the suite remains trusted.
Troubleshoot common failures

Plan runtime, coverage, and cost
Start with a fast, high-value smoke set on every pull request. Run the complete functional suite, additional browsers, and visual snapshots on a schedule or release gate when execution time is high. Parallel workers and sharding reduce wall-clock time but require independent tests and a runner with sufficient resources. More retries do not make a broken test reliable; they only make diagnosis less visible.
Keep the cost model explicit: browser minutes, CI concurrency, storage for screenshots and traces, and the engineering time spent reviewing baselines. Retain failure artifacts long enough to investigate, and expire old reports and obsolete snapshots. There is no authoritative universal defect-detection percentage or runtime target; measure your own suite’s duration, failure causes, and escaped defects.

How often should I refresh visual baselines?
Refresh them only after reviewing the change, confirming it is intentional, and verifying that the rendering environment and test data are still the pinned values.

Use an isolated staging environment with deterministic data for routine runs. A carefully scoped production smoke check can verify availability, but it must not create real orders, change customer data, or expose credentials.
What should be added after a bug fix?
Add a focused test that reproduces the old failure and would have failed before the fix, then keep it with the relevant journey rather than creating a duplicate broad check.
