Implement autonomous testing as a governed feedback loop, not as a way to remove engineers from testing. Start with one high-risk user journey, define what a user should see, let an agent help plan or write an isolated test, run it against the real application, and review any generated test or repair before it is merged. Expand only when the checks produce useful, reproducible evidence in CI.

What autonomous testing means in practice

Autonomous testing uses software agents to help plan, generate, execute, and sometimes repair tests. The team still owns the behavior being tested, the agent’s access to the application and its data, and the decision to accept a change. The goal is a repeatable feedback loop in which automation can do work while engineers retain control over intent and risk.

For browser end-to-end testing, that loop can begin with an agent exploring an application and proposing a test plan, continue with generation and execution, and include a proposed repair when a test fails. Those capabilities do not establish that an agent understands product intent or that a repair preserves it. Treat generated output as a candidate requiring verification, not as an authoritative test result.

Choose a user journey and define its risk

Pick a narrow journey where failure would materially affect users or the business: for example, signing in, completing a purchase, or submitting a critical form. Write down the expected user-visible outcome and the state the application must be in for the test to be meaningful.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • State the behavior in terms of what a user can see or do, not internal implementation details.
  • Identify required setup, such as a test account or known application state, and make that setup reproducible.
  • Decide whether the check belongs at the component, API or contract, or browser end-to-end level. The sources here support browser testing practices; they do not prescribe a universal split across test layers.
  • For AI systems or components, document the relevant risks and choose testing processes accordingly. ISO/IEC TS 42119-2:2025 explains applying the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 series to AI testing.

Keep the first automated journey small enough that a failure can be understood. Expanding coverage before the initial test is reproducible tends to multiply ambiguous failures rather than provide useful confidence.

Choose a framework and write down the rules

Choose a test framework based on the codebase, languages, required browser coverage, execution environment, and the team’s ability to debug it. Playwright and Selenium are both documented options; neither is a universal recommendation for every project.

For an agent-assisted project, give the agent current, project-specific guidance. Selenium’s AI coding agent guidance, last modified September 28, 2026, recommends supplying the framework version, current documentation, examples, and written project rules. It warns that stale patterns can result in incorrect or flaky code.

  • How to install dependencies and run a single test or the whole suite.
  • Which user-facing locators to prefer, and how to verify them.
  • How the test should establish and clean up its state.
  • Which waits are acceptable and how to avoid hiding race conditions.
  • What evidence to collect on failure and what human review is required before generated changes are merged.

Keep these rules in a project instruction file such as AGENTS.md, or the equivalent your agent reads. Check unfamiliar APIs in current official documentation rather than relying on a model’s remembered usage.

Let the agent inspect the live application

Do not ask an agent to invent selectors from a description or a familiar page pattern. Let it inspect the running application, propose locators, and verify those locators against the actual page before writing a complete test. Selenium’s guidance summarizes the distinction: “An agent that can only write code is guessing about your application. An agent that can open it can check.”

  1. Start the application in a known state and give the agent the address and the permitted test account or data.
  2. Ask it to inspect the relevant page and propose user-facing locators and the visible outcome it intends to assert.
  3. Review those locators against the live interface. Prefer stable, user-facing interactions where available over assumptions about CSS classes or internal structure.
  4. Have it write one isolated test with explicit setup and cleanup, then inspect the test before running it.

Playwright’s best practices say automated tests should verify what end users see and interact with, and recommend isolation so failures are more reproducible and easier to debug. Its guidance cautions against relying on implementation details users do not see, such as a function name or CSS class.

Build, run, and stabilize one test

Run the new test by itself while establishing its setup, locators, and assertions. A useful test checks an outcome that matters to a user, not merely that a click or page load occurred. Repeat runs to investigate intermittent behavior before treating the test as stable.

When the test fails, provide the agent with the actual exception, command output, logs, and a screenshot or trace from the failing run. Selenium recommends using real failure evidence and warns against masking race conditions with longer timeouts or sleeps. A longer wait may change when a failure appears without correcting its underlying cause.

Playwright’s guidance describes traces that include a test timeline, DOM snapshots, and network requests. It recommends recording traces on the first retry rather than for every test because tracing has a performance cost. Use failure evidence to decide whether the problem is in the application, test setup, locator, timing, or environment before asking for a repair.

Connect the suite to CI

Once the test runs locally, install the project’s dependencies and matching browser binaries on the CI worker, run the suite, and retain the resulting report and failure evidence. Playwright documents this basic CI sequence:

npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright test

These commands are for a Playwright project using npm and a compatible CI environment; adapt dependency installation to the project’s package manager and runner. The Playwright CI guide recommends one worker by default in CI for reproducibility. If the infrastructure can support more parallelism, teams can enable parallel tests or shard work across jobs.

Check that the CI environment uses the expected application configuration and test data, and that reports or traces are preserved where engineers can inspect them. A green result is useful only if the test actually ran against the intended build and meaningful state.

Introduce agent roles in reviewable steps

Playwright’s Test Agents documentation describes three roles: a planner that explores an application and produces a Markdown test plan, a generator that turns a plan into Playwright tests, and a healer that runs a suite and repairs failing tests. The page is labeled Next, so confirm that the described capabilities and commands apply to the installed version before relying on them.

  1. Plan: Ask for a test plan around the chosen journey; review it for intended behavior, risk, and scope.
  2. Generate: Have the agent create a limited test from the approved plan; review locators, assertions, setup, and cleanup.
  3. Execute: Run the test locally and in CI, and inspect evidence when it fails.
  4. Propose repairs: If using a healer, compare each proposed change with the intended user behavior and the failure evidence. Rerun the test and review the diff before merging.

This staged approach is a governance choice based on the documented agent roles and Selenium’s review recommendations, not a workflow mandated by Playwright. In particular, a repair that makes a test pass is not by itself evidence that it still checks the right behavior.

  • Whether high-priority journeys execute in CI.
  • Whether failures can be reproduced and diagnosed from retained evidence.
  • How much time the team spends diagnosing failures.
  • Whether agent-proposed tests and repairs pass human review and preserve intended behavior.

These are practical measures to establish for your own workflow, not published benchmark results. The cited framework and standards material describes practices and capabilities; it does not establish a universal productivity gain, defect-reduction rate, or return on investment for autonomous testing.

Account for execution and operational trade-offs

Framework choice is only one part of the decision. Compare the options against the needs of your own product and environment:

Decision area What to establish
Application and language fit Whether the framework works with the existing codebase and team conventions.
Browser and environment coverage Which browsers, platforms, and CI environments the tests must exercise.
Failure evidence Whether logs, screenshots, DOM snapshots, traces, or network details are available when something fails.
Stability and scale How isolation, worker count, sharding, and runner capacity affect reproducibility and runtime.
Agent governance Whether the agent can consult current documentation, inspect the live application, follow project rules, and submit changes for review.
Operations Whether to manage runners yourself or use a hosted service, after checking the service’s cost, data handling, retention, and access terms.

Microsoft’s Playwright Workspaces documentation describes a hosted option for continuous end-to-end testing across browsers and operating systems, with CI-scale execution and a service dashboard. That documentation establishes the service use case; it does not state pricing or data-retention terms, so verify those directly before choosing a service.
