What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Ignore only the pixels that are genuinely nondeterministic, and first make screenshots repeatable. A small locator mask is usually safer than excluding a whole component; when the changing value matters, check it with a functional assertion instead of relying on its pixels.
Make the screenshot repeatable before ignoring differences
A visual diff can change even when the page code does not. Playwright notes that screenshots may vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate baselines and run comparisons in the same browser and environment where possible. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance.
Also control test data and third-party content where practical. A fixed clock, stable fixtures, or a stubbed response can eliminate the cause of a difference without removing visual coverage. If variability cannot be controlled, use the narrowest capture or comparison suppression that solves it.
Choose the smallest suppression that fits
| Method | Scope | What remains checked | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Locator or element mask/ignore region | One element or rectangle | The rest of the screenshot | Visual scrutiny inside the region is reduced; some tools also disregard its bounds or position. |
| Capture-time CSS or style override | Selectors matched by the injected styles | The rest of the screenshot after styling | Hidden or altered content is no longer visually checked. |
| Disable a story snapshot | An entire story or test | No screenshot comparison for that target | Use only when it is not a useful snapshot target, or as a deliberate temporary step. |
| Layout-oriented matching | Broad comparison mode | Layout or structure as defined by that product | Semantics vary by tool; content changes you care about may be tolerated. |
| Raise the pixel threshold | Diff acceptance rule | Differences exceeding the threshold | Small-area genuine defects can become accepted noise. |
These options do not have identical semantics across products. In particular, check whether an ignore feature disregards only pixel values or also element geometry and position.

Playwright: mask a locator or style volatile content
Mask a specific locator
With Playwright Test, pass the unstable locator in the screenshot assertion’s mask option:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('dashboard screenshot', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
mask: [page.locator('.timestamp')],
});
});
Playwright covers the locator’s bounding box with a colored overlay, leaving the rest of the image in the comparison. The masked value itself is not visually validated. If the timestamp or another changing value has functional meaning, assert it separately in the test.

Apply capture-time CSS with stylePath
If several volatile elements can be handled by one narrowly scoped stylesheet, use the screenshot assertion’s stylePath option. For example, create a test stylesheet that hides a timestamp only for capture:
/* tests/visual.css */
.timestamp {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
stylePath: 'tests/visual.css',
});
Because the CSS applies to selectors it matches, avoid broad rules such as hiding all buttons or entire panels. Review the stylesheet with the test changes so it does not silently suppress new content. Check the PageAssertions API documentation for availability and behavior in your installed Playwright version.

Handle animation deliberately
Playwright screenshot assertions disable animations by default: finite animations are fast-forwarded and infinite animations are canceled for capture, then resumed. If animation still causes instability, confirm the behavior for your assertion and consider a focused capture stylesheet to neutralize the relevant transition or animation rather than raising the global diff threshold.
How other visual testing tools handle dynamic regions
Applitools
The Applitools Playwright integration accepts ignoreRegions, including a locator. Its documentation also describes ignore regions and layout matching for dynamic content. If surrounding elements shift but the target’s appearance still matters, Applitools documents checking an element region independently of its changed position. See the Playwright integration, Adding Ignorable Regions, Dynamic content, and Visual Testing of dynamically positioned elements.

Chromatic
For a DOM element, Chromatic documents the .chromatic-ignore class and data-chromatic="ignore" attribute. It says ignored elements’ pixels, bounding box, and position are ignored, so this can conceal movement as well as content changes. Chromatic also supports disabling snapshots for a specific story; that removes the story’s screenshot comparison entirely. See Ignore elements and Disable snapshots.
Percy
The Percy Playwright client documents ignoreRegionSelectors, ignoreRegionXpaths, and custom rectangular boundaries for ignored regions. Consult the integration documentation for the syntax and behavior supported by the version you use: percy/percy-playwright.

Keep coverage for important changing content
A mask or ignore region makes the hidden area less useful for catching visual regressions. If changing text, a price, status, or image matters, assert its value or behavior explicitly in the test. When the content is intentionally variable but page structure is the main concern, a layout-oriented mode may fit—provided you understand that product’s matching rules and accept the content changes it may allow.
Prefer masking a small value over excluding a whole card, navigation bar, or page section. A moving element whose appearance remains important may be better tested as its own region than ignored along with its position.
Troubleshoot noisy visual diffs in this order
- Baseline and test environments differ: align the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode before changing comparison settings.
- Data or third-party content changes: freeze fixtures or stub responses where practical. If that is not feasible, mask only the unstable target and add a functional assertion for important values.
- Animations or transitions vary: use the framework’s animation handling or a narrowly scoped capture stylesheet, then compare again.
- An element moves but its appearance matters: avoid ignoring the entire element if that also removes useful position or geometry coverage. Use a product-supported region check or suitable layout-aware strategy.
- An ignore region hides too much: shrink the selector or rectangle and inspect the actual diff. Ensure changes outside the intended volatile pixels still fail.
- A raised threshold makes the diff pass: lower it again if it admits changes you cannot explain. Stabilize capture and identify the source of the difference before relying on tolerance.

If you need a screenshot rather than a visual regression test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ
Can I ignore a dynamic region in one screen without ignoring it everywhere?
Yes. Scope the mask or ignore region to the locator or rectangle in that particular test or screen. For example, the Applitools FAQ addresses ignoring a dynamic region in a specific screen: How can a test ignore a dynamic region in a specific screen and prevent test failure due to dynamic content?
