Use YouTube Studio’s Audience report to identify candidate time windows, then compare ad revenue and viewer outcomes across equivalent periods. The “When your viewers are on YouTube” heatmap is a planning clue—not an hourly earnings report for your continuous live stream. YouTube’s published Advanced Mode guidance documents daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly chart views, not an hour-by-hour ad-revenue ranking for one ongoing video.
What “best-performing hour” should mean
First decide which outcome you want to improve. For earnings, use estimated ad revenue when that metric is available. If you compare a rate, define its denominator and keep it separate from total revenue. A busy hour is not automatically a profitable one: audience size, ads actually served, advertiser demand, and viewer behavior all matter.
- Estimated ad revenue: the estimated amount attributed to ads. Use this for earnings comparisons where available.
- Estimated monetized playbacks: playbacks during which at least one ad was shown. This is not the same as the number of ads.
- Ad impressions: individual ads shown; one playback can involve more than one impression.
- CPM and playback-based CPM: advertiser-cost measures, before YouTube’s revenue share. They are not the amount the creator receives.
- RPM: creator revenue per thousand views across revenue sources, so it is broader than ad revenue alone.
If you are deciding when to insert ad breaks, define the primary outcome as ad revenue per hour and track watch time or average view duration as a viewer-experience guardrail. A high CPM with few monetized playbacks can yield less total ad revenue than a lower CPM with more ads served. Find candidate windows in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio > Analytics > Audience.
- Review “When your viewers are on YouTube”. The report covers the previous 28 days and shows when your channel’s viewers were online across YouTube. YouTube says it can help with live-stream planning; it does not isolate viewers of one continuous live video. See Understand your YouTube audience.
- Note candidate windows in the timezone you use for scheduling and reporting. Consider where your viewers are located and the mix of time zones before translating the heatmap into local clock hours.
- Use the heatmap to form a hypothesis, not a conclusion. Then check the stream’s own live-performance reports for audience context and compare like formats.
Viewer activity is not the same as monetized playback or earnings. YouTube identifies geography, time of year, ad formats, advertiser targeting, recent ad exposure, Premium status, and ad availability as factors that can change ad metrics.

Compare periods on a like-for-like basis
Build a simple observation log in your chosen timezone. Compare the same weekday and clock-hour window over multiple weeks where possible. YouTube does not prescribe a sample size or statistical test for this exercise; treat the log as a practical way to avoid drawing conclusions from one unusual day.

YouTube recommends comparing the same content type because audience behavior can differ by format. Live-performance reports include measures such as concurrent viewers and watch time, and stream analytics can be exported as CSV. Check whether ads were enabled and delivered
Confirm live monetization is enabled for the stream. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is on; mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. An ad break or slot is an opportunity, not proof that an ad was served to every viewer. YouTube’s systems decide whether slots get ads based on multiple factors.
For automatic mid-rolls, YouTube offers low, medium, and high frequency settings, as well as manual insertion. Its guidance says automatic mode can snooze mid-rolls during high engagement and pause them for some member interactions. Assess revenue alongside watch time and average view duration rather than assuming more breaks will perform better. See Monetize your live stream.

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour. This was an average comparison between channels with live automatic mid-rolls enabled and those without, across 207 countries in January 2024. It is not a causal guarantee or forecast for an individual channel or 24/7 stream.
Know what YouTube’s reports can—and cannot—show
YouTube’s published Advanced Mode guidance covers report customization, comparisons, metrics, filters, exports, and daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly chart views. It does not establish an hourly ad-revenue breakdown inside one continuous 24/7 live video. Do not describe Studio as providing a definitive hour-by-hour earnings leaderboard unless you verify that capability in your own account. See Learn how to use Advanced mode for analytics reports.

Report availability can depend on context. YouTube’s live monetization guidance describes a Live filter for viewing a live-stream revenue breakdown, while its live-metrics guidance says interaction and revenue reports are unavailable when filtering for live in that report context. Follow the options actually shown for the report you are using rather than assuming every metric appears in every Live-filtered view.
Revenue data can take two days to appear in Analytics, and estimated revenue may later be adjusted, including after a week and in the middle of the following month. Compare settled periods consistently and label figures as estimated or finalized as appropriate. See Check your YouTube revenue.

Interpret the result without overclaiming
- Call a period a promising candidate if the heatmap is strong; call it a better-performing period only after the comparable stream-specific data supports that conclusion.
- Report total estimated ad revenue separately from CPM, playback-based CPM, RPM, monetized playbacks, and ad impressions.
- Do not attribute every difference to clock time. Consider weekday, geography, season, stream format, content changes, ad settings, and ad opportunity volume.
- Do not promise that moving or adding ad breaks to busy hours will increase earnings. YouTube says its ad systems balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values, and an ad slot is not guaranteed to receive an ad.
If you cannot access validated hourly revenue data for the continuous stream, report the Audience heatmap as an activity pattern and compare available revenue at the report’s supported time scale. Do not present an inferred hourly ranking as measured earnings.
