To find what is using your processor, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and check the CPU column on the Processes tab. The number identifies current load; the process name helps you choose a safe next step. High CPU is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so start with the app or task shown rather than applying every fix at once.

Find what is using the CPU

  1. Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. If the compact view appears, select More details.
  2. Check Processes: Select the CPU column heading to sort by current processor use. Note the names of the apps or processes at the top and whether the load changes over time.
  3. Get context: Use Performance to view overall CPU activity, and Startup apps to see which programs are configured to launch when you sign in.

Close an app you recognize if you do not need it, then observe whether CPU use falls. Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes just because they appear near the top; record the name and investigate the associated app before acting. Microsoft recommends monitoring resource use and troubleshooting processes that consume substantial resources, but its guidance does not set a universal percentage or duration that defines “too high.” Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Try low-risk fixes first

Close unnecessary apps and restart

Save your work, close apps and browser tabs you are not using, and restart Windows. Check Task Manager again after signing in. If CPU use rises only after a particular app opens or a task begins, that pattern can help narrow the cause.

Review startup apps

In Task Manager, open Startup apps and disable only programs you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. This changes what starts with Windows; it does not identify or repair every possible cause of high CPU. You can re-enable an item if something you rely on stops working.

Update Windows and drivers

Check for Windows updates and available optional driver updates. Outdated software is one possible contributor to poor performance, but an update is not a guaranteed CPU fix. If the issue began immediately after a recent update, see the recovery options below before changing unrelated settings.

Scan for malware and review background activity

Run a scan with Windows Security. Also review which apps are permitted to run in the background and turn off permissions only for apps you recognize and do not need active. Malware, background activity, and other performance constraints are among the factors in Microsoft’s general guidance; none can be inferred from a CPU reading alone.

Separate storage cleanup from CPU troubleshooting

Freeing disk space may help some broader performance problems, but disk cleanup is not a direct remedy for a process consuming CPU. Use it for a storage issue, not as a substitute for identifying the process in Task Manager.

Use a clean boot to isolate a startup conflict

If CPU use returns after startup or the responsible app is unclear, a clean boot can help determine whether a non-Microsoft service or startup program is involved. Microsoft describes its purpose this way: “A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, making it easier to identify and troubleshoot background software conflicts affecting apps or games.” See Microsoft’s clean boot instructions.

  1. Sign in with an account that has administrator rights. Open System Configuration by searching for msconfig from Start.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services first. Record which remaining services you disable, then disable them.
  3. Open Task Manager from System Configuration’s startup controls, go to Startup apps, and disable the startup items. Record those changes, too.
  4. Restart Windows and check whether the high CPU returns. If it does not, re-enable items in a controlled way to narrow down the conflict.
  5. When finished, restore normal startup and re-enable the items you disabled.

A clean boot temporarily disables some functionality, so keep the change log and restore normal startup when testing is complete. On a managed computer connected to a network, policies may restrict the procedure; Microsoft advises using System Configuration for advanced boot changes only with support-engineer guidance.

Repair Windows system files only if corruption is suspected

DISM and System File Checker target missing or corrupted Windows system files. They are not general-purpose fixes for every high-CPU cause. If Windows files are a plausible issue, follow Microsoft’s documented order: install current updates, restart, run DISM, then run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt. The instructions are at Microsoft’s System File Checker guide.

If the problem started after an update

If high CPU appeared immediately after a Windows update, Microsoft’s recovery guidance includes uninstalling a recent update. Windows recovery options also include System Restore, which can roll back system files and settings without rolling back personal files. Choose a recovery action that matches the timing and scope of the problem rather than using it as a routine first step.

Choose the next step by what it changes

Option What it helps determine or change Reversibility and trade-off
Task Manager Identifies current resource-heavy processes and shows overall CPU and startup context. Diagnostic; viewing information does not change system settings.
Close apps or adjust Startup apps Targets a recognized app or unnecessary automatic launch. Usually easy to reverse; disabling a needed startup item may interrupt its expected behavior.
Windows Security scan and background-app review Checks for malware and reduces unneeded background activity. Review permissions carefully; changing background behavior can affect app notifications or activity.
Clean boot Isolates a possible non-Microsoft service or startup-program conflict. Temporary loss of some functionality is possible; track changes and restore normal startup afterward.
DISM and System File Checker Repairs Windows image or system-file problems when corruption is suspected. Targets Windows files, not arbitrary apps or hardware; Microsoft documents the sequence but does not promise it resolves every high-CPU issue.
Best performance power mode Changes the power/performance behavior of the device; it does not identify which process is consuming CPU. Can increase power draw, heat, and battery drain on a laptop. See Microsoft’s power-mode instructions.
Hardware upgrade May be a longer-term option if an older PC remains slow despite software troubleshooting. Not a diagnosis or an immediate software fix; evaluate the broader symptoms and device age.

When high CPU may point to an aging PC

Consistently high CPU alongside other performance problems can be a sign that a PC is aging, but utilization alone does not prove that the processor is failing. Microsoft notes that older hardware may not improve much from software steps and that an upgrade may be a long-term option; it does not prescribe a universal CPU threshold. Review its Windows performance advice before concluding that replacement is necessary.

Windows 10 support status

The cited performance and clean-boot guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10’s free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. If you still use Windows 10, that lifecycle change matters when deciding how to keep the PC secure, regardless of whether the CPU issue is resolved. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice explains the end of support.
