You can host your own cloud by running a service such as Nextcloud on a server you administer and connecting your computers and phones to it. That gives you more control over the server and its location, but also makes you responsible for installation, updates, security, uptime and backups. If you would rather not operate a server, Nextcloud also supports using a hosting provider.
Choose who will run the server
The first decision is whether to administer the server yourself or pay a provider to host Nextcloud. Self-hosting can mean a computer in your home or a server you rent and manage; in either case, you take responsibility for the software. A hosted provider runs the service environment, though you should still understand its terms, security practices and backup arrangements.
| Choice | Who administers the server? | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted hardware | You install, update, monitor and repair the system. | You choose the equipment and its location. Access depends on the condition of that equipment and your connectivity. Budget for hardware, storage, power, internet service and separate backups. |
| Nextcloud hosting provider | The provider operates the hosting environment; responsibility for the service and account depends on its offering. | Compare provider fees, storage, backup terms and service details. A provider handles the infrastructure, but that alone does not establish a particular uptime level or make a privacy guarantee. |
There is no universal cost winner: compare the total expense of equipment, power, connectivity and backups with the provider’s fees for your own needs. Nextcloud’s installation options include choosing a hosting provider.
Check the requirements before installing
Requirements depend on the number of users, installed apps, files and server activity. The current Nextcloud 35 system requirements list Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and RHEL 10 as recommended operating systems, alongside Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Debian 13 and other supported choices. The manual recommends PHP 8.5 and PostgreSQL; it also lists MariaDB 12.3 as recommended among its MariaDB choices, MySQL 8.4/9.7, and SQLite for testing and minimal instances. Apache 2.4 with PHP-FPM or mod_php, and nginx with PHP-FPM, are listed web-server options. Check the live requirements before deployment because compatibility changes between releases.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Nextcloud’s manual gives memory guidance per process, not a total-machine sizing recommendation: 128 MB RAM per process minimum and 512 MB per process recommended. Its built-in updater requires at least 256 MB. These figures do not tell you how much memory your complete server needs; that depends on your workload and software stack.
Pick an installation route
Nextcloud All-in-One for Docker users
The official Nextcloud download page identifies Nextcloud 35.0.0, released September 16, 2026, and describes its maintained All-in-One Docker image as an automated installation for home or cloud. It is a reasonable route if you are already comfortable running and maintaining Docker. Automated installation does not remove the need to manage updates, secure access or backups.

Other supported installations
Nextcloud documents server installation choices for supported operating systems and hosting providers. Choose a route that matches your operating-system and administration experience, then follow its instructions and the requirements for that release. Whichever path you choose, plan for reliable command-line or scheduled-job access: administration and repair can require CLI commands, and background jobs need dependable scheduling. The ownCloud deployment guidance describes these operational needs; it is useful context, not current Nextcloud sizing advice.
Secure external access and maintain the server
For a production server reachable over a network, configure HTTPS and do not permit unencrypted HTTP. Nextcloud’s hardening guidance warns that unencrypted access risks man-in-the-middle attacks and interception of data and passwords. It also recommends putting the data directory outside the web root. Moving the configuration directory outside the web root can help protect database credentials and other secrets if the web server is misconfigured.

Keep Nextcloud and its supporting software current. The requirements manual notes that older PHP versions are deprecated over time and recommends an up-to-date version to receive security and performance fixes. Check the requirements for your installed release before changing PHP or other components, and follow the upgrade instructions for your installation method.
Also plan for ongoing administration rather than treating setup as a one-time task. Monitor the server, apply updates, verify scheduled background jobs and respond to failures. A home server’s availability depends partly on your equipment and connection; rented infrastructure shifts some hardware operation to its host, not necessarily all software administration.

Understand what encryption does
Encryption protects different parts of the system in different ways. Nextcloud’s encryption overview distinguishes these layers:
- TLS/HTTPS: Protects data in transit between clients and the server.
- Server-side encryption: Can protect stored data, but does not mean the server cannot access the keys. Nextcloud notes that keys can be present in server memory while a user is logged in and could be retrieved by a determined attacker.
- End-to-end encryption: Available for selected folders through Nextcloud clients. The server facilitates syncing and sharing, but does not receive the data or keys in unencrypted form. This is not the default protection for every file.
Running the server yourself gives you administrative control, not automatic privacy or security. Your configuration, updates, network exposure, physical access and backup practices all matter.

Build a backup that can survive server failure
A useful Nextcloud backup includes more than the files users see. Its backup instructions identify five components to retain:
- The configuration folder
- The data folder
- The theme folder
- The database
- The custom apps folder, if you installed custom apps
Copy the config, data and theme directories to a location outside the Nextcloud environment, and include a database dump. A separate external hard drive can provide an independent backup destination; choose capacity based on your data and retention needs. One drive is only one component of a recovery plan, so consider what happens if it is lost or fails, and periodically verify that you can restore the backed-up components.
Decide whether self-hosting fits your household
Self-hosting is a better fit if you want to administer the system, can keep it updated and secured, and have a plan for connectivity, monitoring and recovery. A provider is worth considering if you want Nextcloud without operating the underlying server. Either way, compare actual storage needs, backup arrangements, service terms and total costs rather than assuming that one option is inherently cheaper, more reliable or more private.
