To host a web application, deploy it to infrastructure that supports its framework and runtime, verify a preview, publish a production version, point your domain’s DNS records to the host, and configure HTTPS. The exact steps depend on whether your app is a static front end or needs server-side execution, APIs, background jobs, or a database; there is no single provider or deployment command that fits every app.

1. Identify what your application needs

Before choosing a host, write down the details it will need to build, start, and serve correctly. Static front ends and applications that execute code on a server require different hosting capabilities.

  • Framework and runtime: Note the framework, language, and runtime version the app uses.
  • Build and start: Identify the build command, expected output directory, and—if applicable—the command used to start the server.
  • Configuration: List required environment variables and distinguish secrets from ordinary settings.
  • Services: Record API, database, authentication, storage, and background-job requirements.
  • Operations: Consider expected traffic, region, scaling, logs, backups, and who needs access to deployments.

These are planning questions, not a universal checklist imposed by any one provider. Confirm that the host supports the app’s actual runtime and deployment model.

2. Choose a hosting approach

Hosting makes your built or running application reachable through infrastructure you operate or a provider manages. A managed platform can handle much of the deployment and runtime infrastructure. A cloud architecture assembled from services can offer more control but may require you to configure components such as DNS, compute, load balancing, security controls, caching, and a managed database. AWS describes these as possible parts of a cloud architecture in its AWS overview of cloud components.

Approach Useful when What to compare
Managed application platform You want the provider to manage much of the runtime and deployment infrastructure. Runtime support, preview workflow, scaling, logs, database integrations, current price, and lock-in.
Front-end deployment platform Your app fits the platform’s supported front-end and serverless or runtime model. Framework support, functions and APIs, build behavior, domain handling, limits, and current price.
Cloud infrastructure assembled from services You need more control over networking, compute, data, or architecture. Operations burden, security design, scaling, database, DNS, monitoring, and cost.

For examples of distinct managed workflows, see Azure App Service, Vercel deployments, Netlify site deployments, and AWS Elastic Beanstalk. These are not feature-equivalent products. Compare supported runtimes, deployment from Git, a CLI or another pipeline, preview and rollback options, data needs, access controls, and the operational work you are willing to take on. Check each provider’s current runtime documentation, plans, quotas, and pricing; the available documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples price comparison or a universally best provider.

3. Prepare configuration and deployment settings

Use the hosting provider’s environment-variable or secret-management mechanism for production configuration. Do not put production credentials in public source files. The exact setup differs by host; Vercel’s CLI deployment guide describes a provider-specific deployment workflow, not a universal configuration method.

4. Deploy a preview and verify it

Use a preview or staging deployment before production when the platform supports it. Vercel’s documented CLI workflow, for example, deploys a preview that you can check with a request and inspect through error logs before publishing to production.

  1. Deploy to a preview: Use the selected provider’s preview, staging, or non-production deployment flow.
  2. Check the build: Confirm the deployment completes and the expected routes load.
  3. Exercise real behavior: Test forms, APIs, authentication, and any key user journey—not just the home page.
  4. Inspect logs: Look for blocking errors and verify that required services are reachable.
  5. Fix and redeploy: Resolve issues in the app or configuration, then repeat the checks.

5. Deploy the production version

Once the preview is verified, promote that version or use the host’s production deployment flow. The procedure and naming differ between providers.

For Vercel’s CLI specifically, the documented production command is vercel deploy --prod. Vercel says that deployment is assigned to the production domain automatically. This command is not a general-purpose deployment command for other hosts.

For AWS Elastic Beanstalk, the documented process involves creating an application and environment and deploying an application version. AWS notes that if no version is selected when creating an environment, its example can deploy a sample application by default. Follow the Elastic Beanstalk deployment instructions for the environment you are creating.

6. Connect a custom domain

Add your domain in the hosting platform, then create the DNS records the platform specifies at your DNS provider. The required record and target vary. AWS’s Elastic Beanstalk guidance, for example, describes an environment URL under elasticbeanstalk.com and a CNAME pointing to the environment’s load balancer. Azure, Vercel, and Netlify each have their own domain setup instructions.

  1. Add the domain to the app or project: Use the provider’s custom-domain settings and enter the hostname you plan to serve.
  2. Copy the requested DNS record details: Use the exact record type, name, and target shown for your domain and provider.
  3. Create the record with your DNS provider: Do not reuse a DNS example from a different host; its target may be wrong for your app.
  4. Verify domain status: Check the hosting platform’s domain settings for confirmation that the records point to the expected target.

7. Enable HTTPS and check the live site

Configure a certificate for the custom domain and verify the site loads at its HTTPS address. The steps and prerequisites are platform-specific. Azure’s documented certificate-binding procedure lists domain mapping and a supported pricing tier among its prerequisites; its security guidance also says HTTPS-only behavior must be enabled explicitly in the described configuration. Microsoft surfaced a notice that App Service Managed Certificates changed effective July 28, 2025, so check its current guidance before relying on that certificate option.

AWS’s illustrated HTTP-to-HTTPS redirection setup uses a certificate and load balancer. Its redirection example is for an Application Load Balancer and does not apply as-is to Classic or Network Load Balancers. Consult the instructions for your actual environment rather than assuming a redirect is enabled by default.

  1. Follow your provider’s current certificate instructions for the custom domain.
  2. Open the HTTPS URL and confirm the app and its important routes load without certificate warnings.
  3. Check whether HTTP redirects to HTTPS; enable that behavior if appropriate and not already configured.
  4. Test forms, API calls, authentication, and other key flows on the HTTPS site.

See Azure App Service certificate configuration, Azure App Service security guidance, and AWS Elastic Beanstalk HTTP-to-HTTPS redirection guidance. Certificate availability, renewal, and security defaults can change; verify the current provider instructions.

8. Monitor and maintain the deployed app

Launching the site is not the end of hosting. Use the controls available on your chosen host and plan to keep the app working and recoverable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Review application and deployment logs, errors, uptime, and resource use.
  • Keep backups and a recovery plan for important data.
  • Update dependencies and review deployment and account access permissions.
  • Check certificate status and renewal arrangements.
  • Revisit scaling, security, and monitoring settings as the app and its traffic change.

Azure’s security guidance recommends diagnostics, security review, backup and recovery, and secure deployment practices; the actual monitoring and backup controls depend on the provider and plan.
