To hire the right React Native developer for a startup MVP, define the smallest user workflow you need to validate, then evaluate candidates on shipped mobile work, platform-specific problem-solving, and their ability to deliver a tested release—not on React web experience or a low hourly quote alone. Before work starts, agree in writing on milestones, store-release responsibilities, repository access, maintenance, payment, and code rights.

Define the MVP before asking for estimates

A candidate cannot give a useful estimate for “an app” without knowing what it must do. Write a one-page brief that lets candidates respond to the same scope and expose assumptions early.

  • User and problem: Who will use the app, and what problem should it help them solve?
  • Validation workflow: Which one or two user journeys must work for you to learn whether the idea has merit?
  • Platforms and launch: Is the first release for iOS, Android, or both? Does “launch” mean a test build, a limited release, or submission to each store?
  • Integrations: Identify required services and device features, such as authentication, payments, maps, camera, or notifications.
  • Existing work: State whether designs, a backend, API documentation, or accounts are already available, and who will provide anything missing.
  • Later ideas: Separate launch-critical requirements from features that can wait.

Ask candidates to list assumptions, dependencies, and risks before they quote a fixed price or schedule. A proposal built around explicit deliverables is easier to compare than competing estimates for different interpretations of the product.

Match the developer’s experience to the app

React Native experience is not the same as React web experience. The official React Native introduction says developers need an understanding of JavaScript fundamentals and identifies Android and iOS development as useful background: React Native introduction. Ask for evidence of mobile work and probe how closely it matches your MVP.

When general React Native and Expo experience may fit

For a narrowly scoped app using common APIs, a developer with practical Expo experience may be able to handle the mobile build and release path. React Native’s June 25, 2024 guidance recommends using a framework such as Expo for new apps, and its current getting-started documentation describes Expo as a production-grade React Native framework. The same documentation presents EAS as an optional set of services, not a requirement: React Native’s framework guidance and React Native getting started. Treat this as official guidance, not a rule that every project must use Expo. Put your stack preferences and constraints in the brief, then ask the candidate to explain the trade-offs for your app.

When to probe for native-platform depth

If the MVP depends on unusual native integrations, embedding React Native in a legacy app, demanding performance work, or debugging a native SDK, ask for direct experience with the relevant iOS, Android, or native-module work. Framework labels alone do not establish that a candidate can handle those requirements. Confirm their experience against the specific device APIs and SDKs in your brief, and clarify when they would bring in platform-specific help.

Ask for proof of shipped mobile work

Request links to released apps or a walkthrough of a relevant code sample. For each example, separate the team’s work from the candidate’s personal contribution: what they designed, implemented, debugged, tested, and released. A released app can demonstrate experience, but it does not by itself show who owned each part.

Use questions that surface both technical judgment and delivery responsibility:

  • “Show me an app you shipped to iOS and Android. What did you own from start to release?”
  • “Which framework and build workflow did you use, and why did it fit that product?”
  • “Tell me about a bug that behaved differently on iOS and Android. How did you isolate it?”
  • “Which device APIs or third-party SDKs did the app use? What was difficult about integrating them?”
  • “Who handled signing, store submission, and fixes after release?”

Look for a specific account of decisions and problems, not just a list of technologies. A candidate need not be an expert native engineer for every MVP, but should describe the limits of their experience honestly and know when platform-specific expertise is needed.

Use a small, paid assessment

If a portfolio walkthrough does not answer your questions, use a short paid exercise based on a representative task from the MVP, or review existing work in a structured session. Keep the task bounded; do not ask a candidate to build a complete free prototype.

Assess whether the candidate clarifies ambiguous requirements, divides the task into testable pieces, handles loading, error, and empty states, explains trade-offs, and can walk you through the code. This is a practical selection method, not a standardized or independently validated hiring test.

Choose an engagement model that fits your operating needs

Consider not just who can write the code, but who will manage decisions, coordinate related work, and maintain the app when the initial build is done.

Engagement May fit when Clarify before hiring
Independent contractor The scope is bounded and you can collaborate directly with the developer. Availability, continuity if they leave, and who handles maintenance after the build.
Agency or development team You need a combination of mobile development, design, QA, project coordination, or backup coverage. Who will actually do the work, who makes product decisions, and how responsibilities are divided.
Employee You expect a continuing roadmap and want product knowledge to accumulate in-house. Recruiting time and the broader cost of employment, alongside the work the person will own.

These are decision factors, not guarantees about what a particular contractor, agency, or employee will provide. Ask each candidate or provider to identify the people, responsibilities, and ongoing availability included in their proposal.

Budget from comparable proposals, not a single market rate

Published figures describe different populations and measures, so they are not interchangeable estimates for building your MVP. For context, Upwatcher says its May 2026 analysis tracked 2,753 React Native postings on Upwork over 31 days ending June 1, 2026. It reported a $25/hour median across 1,042 hourly postings and a $250 median fixed budget across 1,149 fixed-budget listings. These are listing medians, not verified completed-contract payments; the fixed-budget median is not a credible proxy for the cost of a scoped production MVP: Upwatcher’s May 2026 market analysis.

Match.dev publishes a $50–$80/hour senior rate for its own vetted network, with rates stated as last verified in July 2026; this is that provider’s published rate, not a universal market benchmark: Match.dev’s React Native developer page. Trio’s June 23, 2026 guide cites a U.S. average salary estimate of $129,348 from ZipRecruiter. That is an employee salary figure, not directly comparable to a contractor’s hourly rate: Trio’s 2026 hiring guide.

For your own budget, estimate the defined deliverables, required seniority and availability, QA and store-release responsibilities, and a contingency for unresolved dependencies. Request proposals against the same brief and compare what each includes, not just the headline number. The available figures do not establish a reliable cross-market price for a scoped startup MVP.

Make testing, release, and handoff part of the plan

A delivery plan should account for real-device testing and release work on every target platform. React Native’s publishing guides describe distinct steps: the iOS guide covers Release configuration, archiving, uploading to App Store Connect, and submitting for review; the Android guide covers release signing and generating an Android App Bundle. Ask the candidate to identify who will perform each task, what accounts and access are needed, and which founder decisions could block progress: iOS publishing guide and Android publishing guide.

Store review and approval are not entirely under a developer’s control, so agree on the work they will complete rather than promising an approval date. Have the candidate estimate milestones, identify dependencies, show progress in a repository you control, and document setup, build, and release steps so another developer can take over if needed.

Put scope, payment, and code rights in writing

Before work begins, agree on deliverables and acceptance criteria, how change requests affect scope and payment, repository and account access, third-party dependencies, maintenance, confidentiality, and transfer of relevant rights. Make sure the contract identifies who creates the work and what happens to the code and related materials at handoff.
