Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to compare a browser rendering with an accepted reference, then inspect the resulting diff when a test fails. Keep the rendering environment and page state stable first; tune the per-pixel color threshold or allowed changed-pixel count only when representative comparisons show that limited variation is harmless.
How screenshot-test highlighting works
A visual screenshot test captures the page and compares it with a saved reference image. In Playwright Test, the first run creates reference screenshots; later runs compare their captures with those files. Playwright identifies pixelmatch as the comparison library it uses. When a comparison fails, inspect the generated comparison output in the test results. Changed pixels are the signal to review, not a verdict by themselves: they may represent a real UI regression, an intended design update, or capture noise. Accept a new baseline only after reviewing what changed.
Set up a repeatable Playwright comparison
- Reach the intended page state. Load the relevant route, set up stable test data, and wait until the UI state being tested is present.
- Keep rendering conditions consistent. Use the same browser version, operating system, viewport, fonts, settings, and capture mode for baseline and comparison runs where possible.
- Add the assertion at the point to capture. For example:

Run the test once so Playwright creates the reference screenshot. Review the image, then commit the accepted baseline through your project’s normal change review.
- Review later failures before changing tolerance or baseline. Inspect the diff and determine whether it shows a regression, an intentional design change, or unstable capture conditions.
The exact baseline-generation command depends on how the project’s Playwright tests are configured. Use the existing test command and follow the project’s normal process for accepting and reviewing snapshot changes rather than overwriting references automatically.

Make changed pixels visible without hiding meaningful regressions
Adjust color tolerance separately from pixel count
Playwright’s threshold controls how much perceived color difference is allowed for an individual pixel. Its guide describes a range from 0 (strict) to 1 (lax). maxDiffPixels is a separate setting: it sets the number of differing pixels allowed. A higher threshold does not mean a higher allowed pixel count.

});These values are illustrative, not universal recommendations. Choose them against representative diffs from your application. If antialiasing creates small color variations, consider a less strict threshold. If a small number of changed pixels is acceptable, consider a pixel-count allowance. Keep limits narrow enough that meaningful layout or styling changes still fail review.

Control volatility before loosening comparisons
Playwright warns that screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baselines and comparisons in the same environment where possible. Stabilize test data and page state so both images depict the same UI conditions.
For content that must vary and is not relevant to the visual assertion, Playwright documents using a custom stylesheet to filter dynamic or volatile elements. Use this selectively: hiding an element also means its visual regressions will not be checked in that capture. Playwright also retries screenshot captures until two consecutive captures match, which improves repeatability but cannot establish that the accepted baseline is correct. Choose a view that makes the change easy to review
Playwright’s assertion provides the comparison workflow; the exact interactive review view depends on the tool used to inspect the images. For particularly subtle shifts, an overlay, side-by-side view, or quick toggling between images can make differences easier to see than inspecting either image alone.
Chromatic documents its own Diff Inspector with neon-green highlights, overlay/unified view, side-by-side view, and diff strobing. These are Chromatic review features, not built-in Playwright views. Its documentation covers the Diff Inspector and Playwright setup.

When to use a hosted review service
For a direct local check in an existing Playwright suite, toHaveScreenshot() keeps the assertion in the test workflow, though reference files need project management and pixel comparisons can react to rendering variation. A hosted review service can add cloud snapshots and team review, but also introduces that provider’s service and workflow.
Chromatic documents Playwright integration, cloud snapshots, diff review, and interactive inspection. Applitools describes Visual AI checks intended to handle some antialiasing and sub-pixel rendering differences. Those noise-handling statements are vendor claims; validate them against your application. Troubleshooting visual test failures
- Many unrelated pixels differ: Check whether the run used a different OS, browser version, viewport, font set, or headless mode. Align the capture environment before changing tolerance.
- Only text edges or fine curves differ: Antialiasing may be producing small color changes. Review the diff, then consider adjusting
thresholdrather than allowing a large number of changed pixels. - A tiny change fails the test: If the difference is genuinely acceptable, tune
maxDiffPixelsbased on representative diffs. It controls changed-pixel count, not per-pixel color sensitivity. - The same test produces inconsistent images: Stabilize data and page state, wait for the intended UI to appear, and filter irrelevant volatile content where appropriate. Do not mask content whose appearance is part of what the test should verify.
- A baseline update seems to fix everything: Updating the reference changes what future runs treat as accepted. Review the new image as a code change; do not use baseline replacement to silence an unexplained failure.
- The failure appears only in a different execution environment: Compare its browser, host, settings, hardware, power source, and headless configuration with the baseline environment before concluding the interface changed.
